Wednesday of last week, our respected friend, Mr. James Finlnyson, came into the city in his carriage, and in vited the editor of the Register, and his family, to Jump in and ride ontto his farm, about five miles from the city. The invi tation was gladly accepted, and we were soon whirled out to one of the best farms in Linn county, where we enjoyed the hospitality of Mr.; Finlayson and his ex cellent wife. Mr. F. has one of the" best half sections in the county, wbch he lias brought up to the highest state of cultiva tion. He cultivates a fine orchard, produc ing coDie of the largest and most luscious fruit-, the yield of cherries alone bringing in a handsome revenue each year. Of small fruits he- ha a fine selection, and the yield tb&seasoa, espetfaUy of blackber ries, will be enormous we don't remem ber to have ever seen tlie berries so thick or bid fair to grow to such extravagant size. A few rods from the present com fortable farm-house, Mr. Finlayson con templates the erection of a handsome new dwelling, the foundation for which has al ready been dug. The site of the new house is high, commanding a splendid view of the country surrounding for miles in every direction, and is in the midst of a grove 61 ffftfnrtfch oaks. The basement story will be of brick, and when completed it will be one of the handsomest dwellings in Albany Prairie. Mr. -F. is a great lover , of fine stock, and we noticed some good colts among his horses. A yearling Pereheron, weighing we should jndge between 1.000 and 1,200 pounds, bids fair to get away Willi the sfre. White Prhice, in weight and general appearance. Mr. F; fs sur rounded with every comfort,' and nOw,. in his declining years. With his excellent wife and Iriends aronnd him, can enjoy . tne frnits of years'ot frugality and industry in peace and qfiiet. .We shall uofc soon ffir get our visit, nor the kindness shown us by oar excellent host and hostess. Long may they both live to enjoy . what they- have so richly earned by year3 Ot Industry and good management. Victorious. Despite all the disad vantages under which Linn Engine Com pany Xo, 2's steamer labored at the tourna ment at Portland last week, slie got away with the first prize a gold badge, valued at $75 with ease. It is generally conceded, we believe, that our little steanier a No. 4 Clupp & Jones--was as well If not more skilfully handled than any of the other competing steamers, our 4boys"' attending to biz., and obeying orders like well drilled and reliable soldiers; calmly, soberly, and without a visible tremor of excitement, awaiting the result, never for a moment doubting that our own little sfeaTxieT would beat her larger rivals without any extra ordinary effort on; her part. - It was a big victory, and we feel prouder than, ever of onr "boys" and their little steamer. Personal. From the Columbus, Ohio,' Evening Dispatch of June 2Sth, we clip the subjoined In relation to an old and respected citizen cf Linn county: "Mr. David P. Porter, of Shedd, Linn county, Oregon, has been visiting friends in this neighborhood for a week or twol. I?e Is en route to the centennial exposition, hav ing been commissioned by Governor G rover of Oregon, to act as honorary commissioner of emigration at Philadelphia, and In other States.
