On Monday this people will beealled
upon to select, at the ballot-box, whom
they will have to perve them as legisla
tors, in a judiciary capacity, and in the
various county ofilces. We ask the
j votes of this people for the ticket whicl
leads this column because we- conscien
tiously believe it to be composed of the
iest men in the county, mentally and
morally far superior to the ticket offered
by our opponents for their suffrages. In
our ticket the people of the county have
men of culture, of ability, of honesty;
sober, truthful, moral men, who will
grace t&e&eveial positions for which they
have been selected by the choice of an
honest convention. There was no wire
pulling, trading, ginning, or tricks of
any kind employed, either by the can
. did ales themselves or their friends, be
fore or at the time of the County Ccn
' yention that placed them in nomina
tion, to secure the places they occupy
on the ticket. They were, in almost
every instance, the unanimous choice
of the delegates to that Convention be
caure, and solely because, of their emi
nent fitness each for the place assigned
him. A large number of the candi
dates are tillers of the soil. They rep
resent the first and greatest element of
society in this or airy other country;
and being in- sympathy with the great
majority of the voters in the county,
can better understand their wants and
desires than any others. . With sach a
ticket, composed of men who stand as
high socially, mcrally and intellectually
as the best in the land, we confidently
ask and expect the suffrages of every
honest freeman in the county.
Our ticket elected we promise you
immediate reform and economy iu our
county administration. We promise
you that the terrible leaks which have
annually absorbed such immense sums
from our county treasury, shall be per
manently stopped. We promise you
every department of the county govern
ment shall be managed in a straightfor
ward, honest and economical manner.
We can safely promise these things for
we know the men on our ticket, for
whom we speak. If honesty, capability
snd integrity is what this people want
in the management of their affairs, we
offer it to them in the Linn County Re.

We hope that, for once, every honest
citizen in Linn county will lay every
prejadice aside, and vote for those
whose past lives gives assurance that
their promises of retrenchment and re
form will be carried out to the letter.

The Democratic nominees for office
in Linn county, to use a Western phrase,
have been so thoroughly waxed at every
point at which they have got off" their
little pieces during the can vass,that they
had become ditscouraged,' demoralized,
and reckless, before getting to Lebanon.
On Vfednesday, at Lebanon, they met
a crushing 'defeat another Waterloo
that eo disheartened and discouraged
them, that they . all " came home, and
holed up. Fortunately for them,
Gov. Grover had announced to speak
&t Seioon Thursday (the day advertised
for the county canvassers), and some,
if not all, of tho-Democratic candidates
picked up courage and went back- to

I am perfectly willing that Judge
Johns may receive the full benefit of all
that is due him, and vastly beyond, as
I am no sympathiser with personal abuse
and maltreatment jtist for the sake of
scandal. Mr. - Jlelni seems to be quick
in asserting that the article headed,
"More of Judge Johns' Record," is a
base falsehood,' and for no other, reason
than he is dead bent on giving some
one the lie.- I .despise such a nature in
any one, and would scorn to have any
farther debate, were"it not that he has
attempted to make a thing look "plausi
ble, just and proper, where. plausibility
is deception, where justice is fraud, and
where propriety is filth in the mi uds of
the eusible. "Mr. Helm admits that
J ohns has not paid the 50 charges for
professional services by the Hon. X; II.
Cranor,-'decd.,' aud virtually admits
-that the -Jtldge has no offsets to the
same. His language is that Jdga
Johns said that he had counter claims
equal to the account of ; the estate
against him (Johns). If ! Johns has
any such claims it is high time that he
was presenting them, with the proper
vouchers, to the administrator, and
having them placed on fi'.e with the
balance of the papers. No such offsets
are in existence, or Judge Johns, with
his contracted ideas of economy, would
have had them vouched for in some
style or other by this time, as it is now
about three years and a half since, the
death of Mr. Cranor. It is palpable
that Johns has no Euch offsets, or the
administrator is most terribly delinquent
in his duty iu settling said estate. The
truth is Johns never has paid tlie $50,
and does not intend to pay it. -

In another column will be seen the
copy of a contract whereby W. M.
Ramsey purchased the office of County
Judge of Yamhill county for $200, of
D. Smith. It will be remembered that
there was a contest for the office of
County Judge of Yamhill county be
fore Judge R. P. Boise D. Smith re
ceived the certificate of election. Ram
sey contested his election, and the case
was tried before his Honor, Judge
Boise, who was then Judge of the 3d
Judicial District. The case in the Cir
cuit Court went in favor of Smith, the
Court decidjng that Smith had seven
teen majority. Ramsey appealed to
the Supreme Court, after making the
agreement referred to, wherein the par
ties stipulate how the Supreme Court
should decide; aud it appears the Su
preme Court decided the case according
to the stipulation. Does our Supreme
Couit uphold and enforce such contracts
for the sale of office, and lend its sanc
tion and approval to such disgraceful
transactions ? It is to be hoped that
there is some explanation of this con
tract that will free the Supreme Conrt
of Oregon from being a party to enforce
such a disreputable arrangement. Dem
ocrats, look at the record of your Su
preme Court, and say hereafter if you
can, that politics never enters into judi
cial decisions. Read the record of your
candidate for District Attorney, and
then go to the polls and vote for him. if
you think thereby you will be fulfilling
the duties of citizens and voters of Ore
gon. Can it be said that a man who
will make such an agreement is a good
dtize',il& faithful officer or an honest
man ? Every man who votes for Ram
sey thereby endorses the purchase and
sale of office. Democrats, investigate
your candidate for District Attorney.
The records of Yamhill county are be
fore you. Let ns have honest men, not
thieves, in office.

Hon. Geo. R. Helm, in his letter to
the Democrat, says that S. A. Johns
claimed that be bad counter claims
equal to the $50 that he owed the es
tate of N. II. Cranor. Mr. Helm does
not claim that Mr. Johns had any such
counter claims, and Mr. Helm does not
believe that Johns had or has any such
claim. If Johns has .any such claim,
why don't he present it to the adminis
trator and have it allowed ?
There is no doubt that Johns claimed
to Mr. Helm that he had a oounter
claim... ne is just the kind of man to

have been said concerning the fitness of
S At Johns for the position of County
Judge of Linn county, to which office
he now aspires. All concede the office
is one that, to fulfill its duties, requires
a man of considerable legal pttaiumeuts.
as well as a man of honesty and integ
rity. The title to a large amount of
real estate passes every year through
or by virtue of proceedings had in the
administration of estates, and these pro
ceedings are under the immediate con
trol and supervision of the Comity
Judge. It has been said by the friends
of S. A. Johns, that he was a good
Probate Judge; that he k'ept a good
record, and that all sales of laud in the
administration of estates while he was
County Judge of Linn county, from
July, 1868, to July, 1872, were legally
conducted, aud the title acquired by
purchasers good. 1 1 have been informed
that S. A. Johns asserted this himself,
on the stump, within the past week
It takes time to develop errors. TLe
proceedings had before S. A. Johus,and
the records kept by him in the matter of
estates, are beginning to be investigated,
and it is now ascertained that the Rec
ords kept by him are the most defective
ever kept in Linn county. I will in
stance a few of the sales of real estate
confirmed by Judge Johns, the records
being in his own hand-writing and
signed by him:
In July, 1868, Henry DaviJson pur
chased a farm in this county for $1,830,
at administrator's sale, Andrew Greggs,
administrator, and S. A. Johns confirm
ed the sale. On account of irregulari
ties the administrator's deed conveyed
no title, and thejrents aud profits of the
farm are now the subject of litigation
in the Circuit Court of this county,
In August, 1868, James Keeny pur
chased, at administrator's sale, a farm
belonging to the estate of Thomas
Boggs, for $857 50 ; and at the same
time D. M. Thompson aud P. W.
Spink purchased several lots in Albany,
at administrator's sale, paying full value
therefor, believing they were getting
good title thereto. But upon investi
cation it was found that the title to all
these lands so purchased was worthless,
on account of irregularities in the pro
ceeding in the Coantv Conrt. over
which J udge Johns presided. All these
sales were confirmed , by S. A. Johns in
August, 1868. . . ;

that have been brought to my observa
tion during the first two years that S.
A.Johns acted as County Judge of
Linn county. The records of Linn
county will snow the correctness of the
above statements. Linn county . has
never had a Judge that -left so defective
a record. The men who paid their
money for lands, supposing they ' were
getting a good title thereto, now realize
tho importance of having a competent
officer to transact county business, and
the records show that S. A. Johns is
either wholly incompetent, or that he
is criminally careless and negligent of
his sworn duty. Johns has been tried
by the people and found wanting. Is
it policy to try him again, aud entrust
and incompetent man with the interests
of the fatherless and widow ? It is a
matter of 'vital importance to the peo
ple, and they should see to it that they
have a competent man to look after
their interests a: mau with sufficient
ability to know and perform correctly the
duties of the office. S. Al Johns hav
ing been either so ignorant or negligent
in tho confirmation ot the sale of lands,
have we any evidence or reason to be
lieve that estates have been settled up
correctly under his administration ?
Doubtless a few years more, wlwn those
who are now children begin to enquire
into their rights, and investigate the
settlement ot the estates of their fathers
or mothers, they may find as grave
errors in such settlements as in the above
sales. With the evidence of John's in
competency before them, can the people
of Linn county cast their votes for him
on Monday next ? i Justice.
The desperate straits in which the
Democratic "ring"- finds itself, brought
about by disregard of pledges, utter
selfishness, and the manner in which the
fathers of the Democratic party of Linu
county have been treated by the mem
bers thereof, will lead them to resort to
anything under the sun, no matter how
low, mean or venial, to elect a portion
of the ticket. They offered to give
three votes for one vote for their candi
date for Sheriff, in the early part of the
canvass, and now they are offering to
vote the entire Republican ticket save
and except the Sheriff. The ring that
now-control the Democratic party of

comity, that Judge IlSmsey purchased tbo

Circuit Ckrtirt decided that Mr. Smith was
elected by seventeerf majority after which
Ramsey purchased the office for tico hun
dred Jollars and paid the Costs. This is in
itself a crime. Will the people support a
criminal for the office of District Attorney?
Ramsey cannot deny the record nor his
own signature. A man who would pur
chase an office Would be very likely to sell
the interests of the people when occasion
offered. As he said in his speech here, he
la for the system or practice by which he
can make the most money In the shortest
time. Following is a true copy of the in
strument under consideration :

Ramsey to be and to have been duly elect
ed to said office, and to make such other

W. M. Ramsey pay all cost! that may be
mad in said Snpreme Court and not otli

Whereas, it is stipulated that the said
D. Smith shall make no appearance in said

The Democratic nominees in Linn
county, for Senators and Representa
tives, are pledged to support Governor
Grover for the United States Senate.
The Republican nominees having driv
en the Democrats to the wall in the
presenut canvass, in discussing the po-
itical issues ot the day, they sent post
haste tor the Governor to come to their
aid. The Governor promptly answered
the call, but the batl !e has ' already
gone against . him and his mercenary
brigade. . The Governor instructed his
brigade not to tell the people who they
intend to support for the United States
Senate, snd each and every one of them'
laa followed out his instructions to the
letter. They are ready to pledge them-1
selves secretly to Grover, but will make
no pro'miires to the people. It was un
derstood at the Democratic county con.
vention here that none but Grover men
should be nominated. Slart. V. Broyn
manipulated the convention tor Grover,
aud the whole ticket was, made up be
fore the convention met. The load has
become eo heavy that the candidates
have cried out to, Grover for help, and
he has como to tie rescue, throwing
Giifrey and 1" into the breach in his
efforts to redeem the lost cause. But
ho is too late; the knell of doom is al
ready sounding in his ears, and as Ije

see in the distance a seat in the United

intended to defraud and deceive voters

There may . be, and there doubtless is,
other styles of bogus tickets than that
referred to by our Brownsville corres--pondentj
but as the "ring" is more di--fectly
interested in the election of the
Sheriff than any one else on the ticket
in fact offer to give all the balance of
the ticket for a vote for Mr. Ilerren '
we are inclined to side with our inform
ant in the belief that the ring will de
pend to a greater extent on this style of
ticket than any other. The ticket spo
ken ot is a Republican ticket, with the
exception of the name of ous candidate
for Sheriff, Mr. S. A. Dawson. In
place of Mr. Dawson's name will appear
the name of the Democratic candidate
for Sheriff", Mr. J. R. Ilerren. This is
a high-handed outrage on the voters of
Linn connly, and the parties guilty of
snch unblushing rascality should be
spurned by an indignant people, and
sent back to obscurity where they prop
erly belong.

It is generally understood that the
Linn county Democratic legislative
ticket is pledged to 'support Governor
Grover for the United States Senate,
yet every time they have been asked
the qnestion as to w ho they would sup
port if elected to the legislature, they
have refused to answer. Thev dare
not state their position intelligently on
the Senatorial question,. They wear
the Grover collar, yet dare not own it !
What a bra re set ot men they are, to
be snre, to ask the independent voters
of Linn conr.ty to vote them Feats in
the Oregon Legislature, while wearing
a collar they are ashamed to own ! Ah,
what luster they, would shed on the
councils of State, ai'd how highly hon

A POOR STICK.
Word comes from Sweet Home that
Mr. J. Snmner, Democratic candidate
for the Legislature, wilUbe universally
scratched in his own precinct the
stronghold of Democracy in Linn. This
is rather rough on Svunner, and indi
cates that there is something exceed
ingly "rotten in Denmark" in his case
to induce lied rockers to go back on
him. From all the statements made lo
ns, wo" are led to believe that he does
not possess a single qualification fitting
him for the the p'ace to which he as
pires. However, as he will be scratch
ed all over the county where he has
ever resided, no danger of his election
