OCTOBER 15. 1875. Another Smash Ur. About 4 o'clock Monday mooning, as our old trend High Sinead, who lives about a mile south of this city, was driving a pair of spirited horses, hitched to a wagon loaded with cedar posts on the bridge over tlie Calipoota, between South and North Brownsville, the 1 torses became frightened and backed tlie wagon In such a manner tliat the rack and posts slipped off, at tlie same time precipitating Mr Sinead some ten or fifteen feet down tlie bank, where the entire load tell on him. lie was picked up and carried to the resi lience of W. C. Bairtl, and Dr. Crawford called in. Altliotigti pretty badly bruised and "sb.uk up," High was found to.liave sustained no serious, internal injuries, and at last accounts was getting along finely. Tlie horses were caught eventually, after ttiey liad made a pretty bad wreck of the Wagon. Iscexwakt. Tuesday morning alout a quarter to two o'clock, the flits bell sounded the alarm of fire, ami soon the cry of fire ! fire! caiac from- all quarters of the city, men, women and children with tlielr clothes about half adjusted, made tlielr way towards tlie scene of conflagration, which was in the lower portion of the city, in an oM building that liad been used as a scliool house, but at tlie present time liad not been occupied for about three weeks, and has not liad a particle of fire about tlie prem ises for some montlis past, tlierefore, it is in all probability tlie work of some scoun drel tliat either had a spite at tlie owner of the building or was done for pure diabolic al meanucss. Tlie firemen were promptly on haud, out owing to tlie fire being uiider EUvb headway before the alarm was given, and distance tbey had to travel, the build ing tra? almost consumed before they ar rived. The building belonged to Dr. Hill and was valued at $800- 0 lutirance. Eitsaway. Yesterday afternoon as Mr. Harks was about crossing the railroad, track just east of the city, in a two-horse iiack, the train for Portland came along. Tlie. team, a 6ji.ni of grays, took fright, whirled and started off on tlie Lebanon road at full speed. Mr. SI. liad just got out, handing tlie lines to another tarty in the iiack, tike two being the solo occupants. . As soon as tlie horses started the gentle man in the iiack jumped out, leaving the team to wander at tlteir own sweet will. The hack was torn to kindling wood. Arm Broken Brownsville, although. not tlie largest town on tlie Pacific Coast, is full of energy and enterprise. When life becomes tlie least bit monotonous, some of tlie enthusiastic denizens get up a horse race, a shooting scrape, or something to stir up tlie bile and make things hot tor a season. Yesterday was one of tlie big days tor accidents, and we chronicle two run aways and grand smashups tlie fist being THgh Smcad's team, tlie otlier being a team driven by young Tom Philpot. The first we give an account of elsewhere; in tlie . case of tin latter, Philpot was tin-own out with great violence rcsu'.ting in breaking one of his anus, and otherwise making him resemble a walking hospital. We are sor ry for Tom, lait must say we are obliged lor the item. Every man muts do his part iu this world toward entertaining his fellow creatures. , Good 'XrtF. Our fellow townsman, Wm. Cannon, has secured the contract for carrying the express between this city and tlie depot. Mr. Sol I.lng, of Corvallis, lias lteretofore liad the contract. This Is tlie business that was to be changed that we made mention of in yesterday morning's Call. Some of our readers mistook our ' meaning In the matter, and tliought tliat there was to be a etiange In the agent at this place. We make this statement for the benefit of the agent, Mr. Wyatt, a gentle man in whom Wells, Faigo & Co., and the whole community, liave the utmost confi dence. a - A Moving Story. Tlie good people of Gospel ridge were talking of moving their meeting house to a more agreeable locality. Among the advocates of the movement none were more earnest than one whom we shall call good old-Deacon A , who, by the way. had an uncontrolable habit of sleeping in church. No matter how inter esting tlie discourse, tlie old deacon was sure to drop off about such a time. On the Sabbath preceding the day appointed for moving the house, the postor preached an interesting sermon on "The Rock of Ages." Growing eloquent in his remarks, the minister finally added with great em phasis, "Who can move it ?" ' The deacon having been asleep as usual, woke op just in time to catch the query, aud thinking the pastor referred to the meeting bouse, rose op in his Beat and exclaimed, "I'll bring-over ray yoke ameers, and they will jerk it along the whole distance, if yon will keep plenty of hard wood rolling un der It." The deacon never slept in meet- ' ing alter that. -is t . Will Settle. Our old fellow towns man, B. Kohn, who, after traveling all over the United States and de Faderlaiid'Mias returned to Albany and concluded to go in to business again la this city. He leaves to-day for San Francisco for the purpose of laying in a full stock of gent's fancy, ana furnishing goods, and will open out in one of the store rooms hi Froman's new brick abbot the first of November. He . says Oregon is a great country, and that Albany is goou enougn ior nun. There were 1.024 entries at the Fair Ground last Monday evening at o o'clock OREUOX STATE FAIR. Salem, Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1875. SECOKD IAY. At an early hour this morning the sua shone out beautiful and everybody appeared anxious to get to the Fair Grounds, at which point all was bustle and confusion. Taking a stroll through tlie TAVIUOS We discovered that a large number of new articles liad been entered for premiums. In fact the whole thing appears to be a perfect jam In that department. Iu tlie art depart ment we noticed a beautiful ornamental painting by Miss Alice Scott, said to be the handsomest thing of the kind ever seen on Fair Ground. THE CAMPERS. Tlie number of campers tliat liad arrived last night exceeded anything of the kind ever known within the history of the Ore gon State Fair. Up to 10 o'clock they were still pouring in, and all the outside precincts were to hear from. THE SISTERS FAIK. One ol tlie prominent and worthy features of the ground Is tlie Sisters' Fair. A large number of tlie articles to be sold are the liandi work of tlie Sisters and their pupils, which aro to be disposed of by rattles. Among the articles to be rattled are a lady's gold watch, an excellent piano and a beau tiful sola, all having been donated by trends of the school. The postofllce department is under the management of .Miss Mollle Smith, tlie accomplished daughter of mine host of the Clicmekcta. AT THE TRACK, Monday afternoon, an exciting race took place, which Is said to have been tlie most hotly contested of any tliat lias ever occur red ou the grounds. Tlie horses entered were Capt. Jack, by G. G. Glenn; Yakima. J by J. F. Bybee; Alpha, by Win. Thorn p kliL. The horses secured an excellent "send off"," Alpha taking the lead ami keep ing it to the half mile pole, where she was passed by Yakima, who canio home in I. -50.'. with Captain Jack second. Tlie second heat was a very exciting one, Alpha taking the lead agaiu, but was soon over hauled by Yakima, who held his position until the home stretch was readied, when he bid Alpha good-bye and came home in 1:51, winning the heat by a half length. RECEIPTS. Yc learned from Mr. K. M. Waite. the Secretary of the Society, yesterday, tliat tlie total receipts were about 82,500 in excess of any previous fair ou the evening of Mon day. Tlie crowd is greater titan on any previous occasion, and every sign gives to ken tor a magnificent success of the fif teenth Oregon State Fair. accidents. But few accidents have happened as far"as heard from, the principal one having taken place In the city. A little boy named Win. Moras while playing with a derren ger, was accidentally shot, the ball iwissing through his hand and into his body. A Physician was summoned who dressed the woui:d, but at last accounts the bullet had not been extracted. EVERYTHING Jl"IET. On tlie grounds and In the city everything is execrdiugly quiet, but few drunken men arc to be seen, and the Marshals ami l'o- 1 ice complain that "Othello's occupation is gone. Large Stock A. Carotliers & Co. ave ordered, aud are now receiving, an inmciisc stock ot fresh goods in their line. to which they call tlie attention of buyers, feeling assured they can do as well by tiiem in price and quality of goods as any other drug house in the city. Their supplies of choice cigars is specially complete and full, among them a tew of the finest brands ever brought to this city. Proof of the pudding s in the eating or smoking. Ready to be Replaced. Tlie ball and vane tliat was blown off from the dome of the Court House in this city several years ago, Is now ready to be placed In Its proper position again. It should liavc been placed back again long before this time, and not allow tlie Court House to look like a bob- tailed pullet iu a liall storm. A Nke Store. Mr. Myer Harris lias secured the new brick now being erected on First street by Dr. Tate, and will fill it with a complete stock of gentlemen's furn ishing goods, late and elegant styles, cigars tobacco, etc. It will be just the place to get nice goods, and Harris is just lhe boy to keen such an establishment.
