AUGUST 13. 1S75. The Firf.men's Excursion. Although late, yet we cannot re fraiii from adding our testimony to the tact that the excursion of our firoaieit to Portland on Tuesd.iy of last week, was a most happy affair. The occasion wiis tlie celebration of the 22il an niversary of Willamette Engine Company No- 1, of Portland. Mo.-t extensive and exhaustive preparation) liad been made by the Willamette for the reeeptiou and e tert&lutacut of tlieir ties,s and rlylit roy ally were tlie nriinjremtMits carried out. From first to last cur people were surfeited with attention and Undue?, the members of the Portland Fire Deparinent viciiig with each oilier In evidencing tlieir kindly rejfird and good feeliiis. Our i-eople Were'tonislied a tlie magnitude of the preijaratwuj. of Che. The citizens, too. manifested a kindly in terest in the full success of their favorite lire company, by throwing open their pub lie halls and extending a cordial invitation tc the guests ot the Company to make themselves at home." , In fact it seemed that every door was oiteifed, and ever cit izen extended tlie hand of welcome. Un der such circumstances tle celebration on!d not be otherwise than a scecess a success so full and complete tliut the fire boys and tlie citizcus of Portland may ever feel their hearts swell with proud and hon est satisfaction when referring to the cele brativii of the 22d anniversary of Willam ette Engine Company No. 1. It certainly wastW most complete, unexceptionable and unapproiicliable fii-emeu's lay out ve ;nve ever -witnessed in any country or at any time. Long may tlie officers and members of Willamette Engine Company continue to flourish and prosper. After tlie completion of tlieYaqniua Eiy Railway to this city, llio next great under taking will be to continue the ro:rd East ward The capitalists owning tlie Ca.-ca-Te Mountain Wagon lload, leading ft-oni this city eastward over the Cascade r:tiig. have expressed the determination of building a railway from this city through their vast lauded eiate, numbering some two mil lions of acres. iiioii the completion of the Yaquina Bay Railway to Albany. Albany Engi'se Company Xo 1 gave a grand reception at the Op -ra Ilouse on Monday evening, in which a large number of our citizens took rrirt and apparently enjoyed themselves hugely. It was the pleasantest occasion .we have en joyed for many an evening, and the red shirts exerted themselves to make every one feel at home. Ice cream, lemonade and cake was furnished hi ahiiot unlimited supply, and the way some of thosj people went for tlie good things was a caution. M- polk tofSTT romusroJOESffc Albany Reoistek: After a three day's ramble over the rolling surface of Polk County, weary and begrimmed with dust,, we bring up at the thriving village ot Buena Vista regale, refresh, and fall back in our easiest chair, and for a short time live over in review the incidents of our travels, and note some of the many changes that liave been effected in the improvement of this county, in the short space of two year's lime dining which we have been absent. Having resided here-abouts for about eight years prim-to '74, we will be re sponsible for saying that thrift and prog ress is remarkably manifest in every branch of buiiness; agriculture in partic ular. The county is naturally beautiful, and just as naturally productive, convenient and healthy. The soil produces all the grains, fruits and vegetables common to Willamette soil, of a better than average quality a fact largly clue to the natural drainage of tlie lauds. The surplus water Is rapidly carried away, leaving the ground in a tillable condition nuich earlier than the more level parts of the country. The alternate hid and vale, and open oak and ash groves, and frequent spriugs of liv ing water, add beauty, health and conven ience to the numerous resources of wealth. We find the settlers not behind in ener gy and sttccss. The highways and byways once familiar to us are, in many instances, changed or improved till we hesitate to recognize our whereabouts the farms well located and improved, and obscured by waving fields of grain. The decaying old buildings have beau torn away and new ones appear in tlieir places. Comfortable dwellings and commodious barns loom up in tlie many places where, a short time ago, was a graslcss pasture corner. The widened grain fields and well repaired fencing largely index the interior disposi--tion and circumstances of the inhabitants. The click of the reapers and whirr ot the threshing machines tell that harvest is ad vancing. We had the privilege of examin ing some new wheat received by Hobart & Robertson, and fiud the mr.rlts of the hot weather preceptiable on tlie kernel, yet the more than usual acreage will more than olltct the short yield. More an in. 11. M. li. Pay Up. The '-Grange Union. Albany," has declared an assessment of fifty per cent, on the stock taken, and calls upon the stockholders to come down, fork over, pay up at once. Of course those interested will take heed. Nothing can lie done without coin, and if shareholders want tlie biz to go on, they'll fork over the stamps. See ad. elsewhere! I.icut. Hahd. of the Miunt Jineer, Dalles, dropped in on us unexpectedly last Satur day. Pill had good U.re clothes on. ducats in his canteenas, and was as cheer ful as a man could well be who has lived in a country where tlie wind blows every hair out of a man's head it a year or two's residence. It's a good country in which to "raise the wind," sure. Thanks. We are under obligations to A Xolt net , Esq., frtr a copy of the pro ceedings of the 20th annual communication of the Grand Lodge I. O. O. F. of Oregon, held in Portland last May. The printing is specially well executed, and Mr. Xolt ner deserves the fulest credit therefor. Caeinct Shop. We understand that Mr. Grimer has purchased the necessary ground on the north side of First street, east of Broadalbln, of Mrs. Miller, and some time this season Will erect thereon a bidding which he will nsc as a shop for the manu. facture of furniture, etc." Soufi Freight Mr. Corastock is send ding an immense amotfnt of lumber to this city. He may therefore be expected to reach his home in this city about the first or middle of next week. Lafayette Lane, of Douglas county, is the Democratic candidate for Congressman from Oregon. The sign of the timvs- in dicate that the "people of Oregon will "set op' Lafayette in the Congressional busi ness tlie coming fall, probably not to his complete satisfaction, bnt to theirs, - Parley McKnighe left Fish Lake Satur day noon.. He says Rev. Mr, Stratton had been missing since Friday morning'. Wm Brown started "tor Fish Lake Monday night, swearing he'd find Mr. Stratton if Be was to be found. . . J. B. Sprenger, one of the most popular landlords in this State, lately in the busi ness at Portland, from failing health has been compelled to retire, and will probably make his Iiouie for the future in Salem. Andy Johnson Is dead. Dollar Stoke Mr. Geo. Baker has rented the building on tbe northeast corner ot Ferry and First streets, where he will open a "dollar store' to-morrow morning. Ho will keep a nice assortment of genera merchandise, etc., to which lie invites the special attention of the citizens of thi city and vicinity. Call in and see him. Everything goes foi a dollar. Political. We came near forgetting to mention that Lafayette Eane, Esq., Democratic candidate for Congress, gave our citizens an exhibition of his ability as an orator one night last week at the Court Ilouse. It was rather a feeble effort, but he may improve in time at least there is great room for improvement. Hons. Geo. R. Helm and John M. Geartn, the latter of Multnomah county, made the only speeches on tlie occasion, although several otliers exhibited. Illustrated Magazine. The Illustra ted Household Magazine for August is an other splendid number. Here is a maga zine, neatly illustrated and filled with the purest literature, printed monthly and tor- warded to subscribers at the extremely low rates of $2 per annum. Send to 41 Park Row, Xew York. The citizens of Benton county are red- hot on the railroad question, and are working up the $100,000 subscription with fair hopes of success, several of the largest subscribers having doubled their subscrip tions. AVe certainly hope they may raise the amount. Drs. Boughton, Rice, Jones and Hill are kept on the full jump of late, attending to the calls of patients.
