vault he failed toiind box cr fnoney." ? The
matter of the disappearance pf the box and
money was confined to the knowledge of a
few, and the Sheriff with three others set
out to hunt up a clue to the tobbery.
These four were employed all night Satur
day night in watching and patrolling the
streets hunting for evidence in regard to
the theft, but tailed, we are sorry to say,
to find sufficient evidence to warrant an
arrest. Early Sunday morning Mr- John
Burkhart, deputy county clerk, repaired to
the SherifTs office on some business.
Upon opening the door he found a slip of
paper upon which was written, in capitals,
the. following : - ' ' ' .,
'MR. RICE YOTJR OLD BOX IS 100
YARDS FROM THE EAST END OF 2
ST. ON THE SALEM ROAD ON THE
RIGHT HAND SIDE IN THE BRUSH
10 FEET FROM A STUMP. CK ME
WITH 1,000. - --: ; -
Soon after receiving this slip of paper",
the Sheriff repaired to the spot indicated,
and there, sure euough, was tlie box.
Upon an examination of its contents, the
Sheriff found that none of the papers,
such ns poll tax receipts. Treasurer's re
ceipts, county orders, notes of hand, etc,
had been disturbed ; that about $1,200 in
coin Imd been abstracted, leaving, exactly
$S2S 25 in coin in the box with the papers..
As will be seen by a careful reading of the
note slipped tinder the door of the Sheriff's
office some time during Saturday night,
the thief or thieves calculated that . tlie
money left in the box, together with the
three or four hundred dollars In county
orders, notes, etc., would aggregate about
one thousand dollars, and with the stibltin
est impudence ask to be credited with
that amount. Another singular matter is,
that the Clerk's box. also containing
money, in the same vault, waa not touched.
Why the robbers left any riioney 111 the
box taken is a mis tery and of course ex
cites the most intense curiosity. The thief,
is certainly an adept at the business, a first'
class meKiber -tlM pmSesslon 5; and as he
oongeu tne aueriu m giving turn , me
necessary Information whereby he found
the box. money and papers, will he not
prove himself 7 still ' fnrther entitled to
notoriety by giving this public his reasons
for not - going through " the Cleik's
money, and for leaving the $328 25 in
coin in the box when he might just as well
had the entire amount ? So bold a robbery
has never before been recorded, in this
bailiwick.

during the day. and robbed of clothing,
etc., to a considerable amount. . -His ac
count of. the robbery- was substantially as
follo ws : : Himself aud family were absent,
visiting, probably some distance away.
On his way home immediately after dinner,
he was informed by a neighbor that during
the : morning two - men, strangers, had
called at bis residence, and remained some
little time. 'Upon receiving this informa
tion, Mr. Hoft" - hurried home. finding,
upon bis arrival, that the story was but tx
true; that the robbers bad entered tlie
house, which they had thoroughly ransack
ed, and when they left carried away all
his "good .clothes." Mr. H. could net tell
the exact amount of bis loss, . for, as soon
as he became assured of the fact ot the
robbery, he hastened to this city to obtain
a warrant for the arrest of the robbers, not
stopping long euough to ascertain the de
tails. He thinks, however, his loss will
amount to at least $35 in the clothing
taken. A neighbor saw, dnring the after
noon, two men emerge from tlie brush.
dressed in clothing which he recognized as
belonging to Mr. H. Mr: II.,: upon Li3
arrival in the city, sought the office of our

some reason, to grant his request. . Upon
the advice of friends, he then sought the

on enquiry, that he was absent from the
city. These are tlie lads in the matter as
narrated to us. Thieves and robbers are
prowling over the country in every direc-

the banks of a little stream, toe pieces
found being so pure that they were ham,

idea what a rich "find" they bad alighted
upon, probably not dreaming - that : the
. metal was gold, and did not mark the spot
so that it could again be -easily identified ,
an oversight, an utter and reckless disre

people of the Pacific coast which has caused
the expenditure of uutold treasure, mid-
