Some time since a suit for damages
was instituted in the District Court of
Washington Territory bjSheriffSmith, 1
1 of Cowlitz county, against Mrs. Money
and Win. Pickett. Twenty thousand !
dollars was the amount of damages
claimed by the plaintiff. The suit was
commenced in consequence of some
very severe strictures on the official
acts of Sheriff Smith, which were pill)- j
lished in the Kahuna lime n last spring.
The paper, at the time the articles ap-
peared, was owned by Mrs. Money,
and edited by Mr. Pickett. Bast week
the case came on for trial at Kalama. j
After a loiig examination and lengthy
arguments by the opposing counsel, j
the case was submitted to the jury, i
The jury after a brief deliberation re- j
turned with a verdict. This verdict
awarded to Sheriff Smith (he sum of:
