Some of the new comers to our
city, rumor has it, have been at
tacked by sm$U pox since their
arrival here. When it tirrt broke
out, the disease was pronounced
measles. The disease was con
tracted on the steamer trom Sau
Francisco to Portland. So far we
have been unable to trace the re
port up If the report be true, and
it is really small pox, the city
authorities should take immediate
steps to prevent its spread.

The Republic We again take
occasion to commend this magazine
to the attention of our readers. In
dealing with the present political
and economic questions of the day,
me Aepwv is practical, tan, anu
thorough, and its statements can
be implicitly relied upon. The last
number of this valuable magazine
is more than usually attractive,
discussing leading topics, such as
the "political situation," "cheap
transportation," southern war
cliaims," etc., in a vigorous and
staighttorward maimer. Every
citizen who feels an interest (aud
who does not':) in the practical
questions of the day, and in gov.
erumeuttl affairs, should subscribe
for and read this magazine. Pub
lished at Washington, D. C, at
(2 per year.
la Wood's Household Magazine,
for May, has an abundance of ex
celleut reading. There is the real
go-ahead snap to this periodical
which entitles it to much- credit,

money. Tbe number before us con

wedding dinner and such a wed
ding dmiierl To describe it would
be simply impossible. Suffice it
that the table was loaded with good
things, turkeys, chiekens, ham, pies,
cakes, preserves, jellies, etc., etc.,
all showing a master hand in the
preparation and cooking We
never saw a happier lot of people
around a festive board than were
gathered under thf hospitable roof
ot Mrs. Prator on that occasion.
Our experience is that there is
nothing that will bring out the
good qualities of people aud make
them contented and happy, in such
an inconceivably short space of
time, as good victuals well aud
thoroughly cooked. Its only once
or twice in a, lite-time that a com
mon man gets to sit down to such
a feast, aud the bare recollection of
it in after years is a " big thing."
Mrs. P. may well be proud of that
dinner it can not be excelled, its
praise was in everybody's mouth.
We have came near forgetting the
cause of all this liberal expenditure
of time and money the bride and
groom. A finer looking couple we
have rarely seen be with his broad
shoulders, deep chest, good square
features, and an honest, manly look
out ot his dark blue eyes, and she,
with her faultless form and hand
some face,, both elegantly but not
gaudily attired, made a picture of
health and happiness long to be re
membered by all in attendance. If
the most fervent wishes of a large
oircle of warm friends can avail
them, not ft care or sorrow will
ever cross their .pathway through
life to cause them one moment ot
