On Saturday the man Dickens, arrested in the Forks of the Santi am for attempt at rape, was taken before E. N. Tandy, County Judgo, where, after a careful examination by competent gentlemen, he was ordered to the Asylum for the in sane. Persons who are well ac quainted with all the facts, say that Dickens has been subject to "tits" for sixteen years past, and that from a "silly" boy he has been growing worse and worse, until he is now quite insane or idiotic, and therefore is a fitter subject for tho asylum than for the penitentiary, Almost a Tragedy. -A. few days since a party from the country came into the city, hitched, his team in the rear of one of our stores, pro ceeded at once to a saloon, where he soon had taken on so much ben zine that he with difficulty found his way back to his wagon, crawled in and soon fell asleep. Shortly after, a young man employed in the stone tame out and set fire to some rubbish in the rear of tlie store, the smoke from which interrupted the slumberen. He got bat of his wagon in great wratlt, tbrcatefiing to thmsh the young man for thus disturbing him, and. with a riiok or clubt k each hand, went for him. A ha approao'iiexl 1he offending clerk, flcuiris'ai ng aud repeating bis t),r eats, said clerk raised from the g round a missile which be pro jectod with sneh force as to knoek one of the sticks out of the band of tlie kifnriated man. Tlie young 'man then drew a revolve, which in tarn Was knocked from Ms hand by the inebriated individual. Par ties here interfered, and a bloody tragedy was prevented. This is but one ot a number of similar cases that are occurring every few days, and we only report it to show what slight circumstances often prevent terrible tragedies. AcniDOT. Last Sunday two or three boys, out at the depot of the 0. & C. Railroad, jumped aboard the train for Portland to ride down to the switch, a distance of a bun dred yards or such a matter. Upon reaching the switch all of them jumped clear except Willy Humph- rey, son ot George Humphrey, Deputy Slieriff, probably eight years old, who fell upon the ties and dis located his left ankle. J. R. Herrcn carried him to the depot and we bolieve Charley Mealey carried him home. The little sha vers about town have beeu in the "practice, for sometime past; ot riding down to the switch and then jump ing off, and, up to last Stinday, generally getting off without get ting materially damaged. It's a very dangerous way of getting a free ride, and we hope the boys, for their own sakes, will discontinue the practice. School Election A fair turn out of the vc-ters of School District No. 5 was had on Monday last, there being some fifty persons in attendance. The Clerk, Mr. A. N. Arnold, raade his report for the past year, which was satisfactory. Messrs. Dave Thompson, Luther Elkins aud A. B. Morris were placed in nomination for the office of Director. Mr. A. B. Morris was elected. Mr. A. N. Arnold was re-elected Clerk. The prop coition to build a new school-house was carried, and a committee of three, consisting of Messrs. A. N. Arnold, Dallas Price and A. Bal timore, appointed a corrimittee to ascertain the cost, of a suitable lot, aud furnish a plan and cost of a suitable building. This is as it should be. Let the ground be purchased and the erection of a suitable building commenced at once. From the report ot the Clerk, Mt. Arnold, it would ap pear that the funds have- been carefully and economically handled by the Directors, and that there is a small unexpended balance in the hands of said Clerk. The Directors have done well, and deserve credit tberfor. Personal. Dr. J. L. Hill has been suturing from an attack of neuralgia of the heart, but was bet ter the first of the week. Dave Thompson is oat again since being poisoned with poison oak, but he carries a most rubicund countenance. Dr. D. M. Jones returned from a short visit to Portland on Monday. . Mr. Montague, of Montague & McCully, Lebanon, went down be. low ke first of the week to secure a big stock of new goods. Look out for attractions,, on his return to Lebanon, in the way of Spring stye,.etc. r -;v ' WtthfworJjans. mol here's life there's soap." P AiN'Prr, 'AWfh'kt.-One day last week Walter Ketchum, of Althouse (fc Co., was badly injured by a large circular saw, which in some manner became detached from its place on the wall, and fell, striking Mr. Ketchum on; the 'back of the left hand, just below the wrist, the saw tooth cutting 'a principal vein. The wound is a veary painful one, and will compel Walt, to lay idle for some time to come. Bonx. To the wife of R. M. Powers, April, 6th, a 6nn. There is nothing that will change a man so much as a great grief, tin less it is shaving off his moustache. A man was boasting recently that he had been married for twenty years and had never given his wife a cros word. Those who know him say he don't dare to. MISCELLANEOUS..
