OREGON.
On the thirteenth of FeWnary,
eighteen hundred ami titty-nine, just

Since then her growth and proser-

removed ironi me great centres ot
trade, it has taken the slow steps of
years to impart to the "outside
world'' the many advantages offered
to the dwellers ot the crowded cities
vf the Kast, who possess the muscle
and will to labor, to emigrate hither
and help build up a mighty State.
Hardly a tithe of the inducements
offered to willing hearts and l ands J
to come to Oregon and build up I
bomes, has yet been made known to !
the thousands in the older States.

they could rely. Hut gradually,
little by little, reliable information
regardingour climate, soil, the char

tilings that naturally suggest them

tneir lives amid the the "blandish
ments of the arts and sciences," and
who have hitherto looked upon
Oregon as outside the pale of civili
sation, whose people were semi
liarbarous, and went clothed iii
blankets and moccasins, and roamed
the forests and mountain fastnesses
like the untamed savage, is gradu
ally reaching them, dispelling such
absurd notions, and giving them a
dearer and belter idea of "lite in
regon." Less than twelve mouths
ago, letters reached here inquiring
as to whether our people generally
lived in cabins or tents; it our peo
ple were compelled to go armed at
aU times to guard against the
treachery of the wily savage, and
many other similar, to us, absurd
questions. IJut through the col
timus of Oregon's press mainly, and
lf letters and other means, the facts
wh regard to Oregon are gradually
breaking in, upon the average Eas
tern mind, and Oregon is beginning
tee and feel the effects of such en-.
ligltUiument. The fact is being
gradually made known that no

produced ; and no where else, with
little, labor, can such immense

game went on with changing for

a searching stare that held his .very
breath. Without noticing the
new

without one startled glance, or even
the move of a finger, Basset went
"six thousand dollars." "Take the
money,'' said hunchback, and he
took it. Briggs had two jacks, Joe
Basset three kings. As the two
