our grain. Or perhaps it would be
nearer the truth to say that waut of
ready money prevent,'' cash purchases,
to a eoniderahle degree. The vessels
in the river are receiving cargo as rap
idly if- circumstances will admit, from
lots previously purcluised. The only
change of character we have to note, is
the advance in tonnage rates from Pa
cific port, within the past few days.
There is apparently no reason for this
as there are about as many ships on
the way as ean get grain charters.
Comer or ring influence, no doubt,
has hrouglit about the advance. The
rates from San Francisco to Liverpool
are now 3 13s as against i 5s a short
time since.
The following vessels have cleared
at the Custom House in Astoria, and.;
are ready for sea :
British bark Powhattan, for Queens
town, with 12,528 centals wheat
125,456.
British bark Prof. Airy, for Queens
town, with 13,72!j centals wheat
$27,450.
British bark Disco, for Queenstowu,
with 27,005 centals wheat $54,902.
British hark Navigator, for Cork,
10,375 centals wheat $33,752.
Haw. bark Mattie Mueleny, Forbes,
for Honolulu, assorted cargo ofsalnjou
and domestic produce, valued at ft,
380.
The general trade of Portland is as
good us could he expected at this
season of the year, and Haltering for a
heavy spring trade.
Our Salmon business is growing into
a large trade.

Tlie Commercial Horald says : "A
largely lneroaed business in Salmon
curing is promised in 1874 on the Col
umbia river, as well its upon Rogue
river and other streams in Oregon.
At present the market is well stocked
with' barrel Salmon from' the North;
aisOjSalmon bellies in kits from Kouge
river. There is considerable interest
by large Llvtapool dealers for Pacific
salmon for, the year 1M74. The good
quality of that bought and shipped
last year has Been productive of good
results in every way, and the trade
prospects are xceedingiy encouraging.
A very large capital will be efflpioyJ
this season in the prosecution ol this
interest in Oregon waters and some of
our merchants, as agents of the pack
ers, are prewired to do a large bus
iness in the way of making contract
ales." The prices iid tor next year's
catch has not yet transpired.
