Pemociiatic Convention. The
Democrats held a convention for tlie
ooinliwtion ol candidates for city offi

John H icklcmaii interfered by a mo

was largely attended, and more Inter

were placed in nomination : For May

Treasurer, P. C. Harper ; Councllmen,
Andrew Cowan, Julius Gradwohl,
John Parker. C. C. Kuhn, Frank Par

An Explosion. One of Mr. Walt.
Ketcluun's little boys traded with an
other slmer for a gun-barrel, or a hol
low iron tube resembling a gun-barrel,
the other day, and finding said tube to
be full of nails and other articles which

be the more readily removed. The
loosening process was most effectual,
far outstripping the most sanguine ex
pectations of young Ketchum, surpris

family with tlie ease and suddenness
with which a gun-barrel can be emp
tied of all its stuffing. Our young
friend was not aware of tlie fact tit:; t
flie iron tulie contained a heavy charge
of powder, packed In with nails, paper,

Ore he tried the heating process. In
blissful ignorance of the above fad,
he placed the aforesaid tube In tie

Encouraging to Boatmen. We
have met tlie enemy and "scrouged"
'em some! People of retentive memo
ries will buck us up in the statement
that an election tor city officers was
held in this city on Monday. They
will also agree with us hi tlie further
statement that two tickets, one repre
senting the Republican party and the
other the Democratic, were presented
to this people ami their suffrages
asked. The result of that election Is
liefore us. But seven of those ten de
voted Democrats were elected, although
all the "arguments" and "persuading"
known to Democratic strategy were
brought to bear the sick and the
lame, the halt and the blind were
made to do duty, to elect tlie whole
expectant ten. Seven noble Demo
crats, men who arc. always willing to
hold "offls," escaped the salt river
triii, while three were doomed to cut
no "flgger" in Council an honor
which Is reached by few In this vain
world of sorrow. However, we feel
that their loss is our eternal gain ; and
we hope these light a Mictions, visited
upon tliem here below for a good
purpose. witlMiit a doubtless, may in
duce them to turn trom tlie error ot
their ways, and no more follow after
a strange and Godless party that uses
them as prfppets hoisting them with
one string and pulling them down
with the other. As to the three Re
publicans who are to he burdened with
the cares ot office for the next twelve
month, we offer them our sincere and
most copious"' wishes for their ulti
mate salvation alter .-ucli an infliction !
Able Counsel. In tlie proceedings
liFiinst the State Board of Equalisa
tion, heard at Corvallis last week, the
parties instituting the proceedings re
tained Hons. Ceo. R. Helm, ot this
city, ami II. W. K. Clarke, of San
Francisco, as counsel, and to the able
manner which they presented the case
are the ieople indebted for the decision
rendered by Judge Mosher. If the
case is carried up to tlie Supreme
Court, as promised, a few days more
will settle the legality or illegality of
the action of tlie Stale Board of Equal
ization, so far as the State Courts are
concerned, at least. The Supreme
Court meets at Suleni next week.
Quiet. Although several wordy
combats were indulged in on Monday,
no blood-letting, we are pleased to
say, was indulged in, so far as we have
heard. There was an unlimited
amount of "scratching" indulged in
by our tree and independent voters,
but no gouging.
For Indiana. Rev. Mr. Oakes,

of this city, preached his farewell ser

First Boat. The first boat to put
in an appearance at this point this
Winter, was the Governor Grover.
She came up on Sunday night and
went down on Monday, loaded with
wheat Irom tho Farmers' Warehouse.
The City Election On Monday,
was hotly contested, and "scratching"
was indulged in freely. There was
more interest manifested in tlie result
than usual.

the Corvallis Gazette, was in good
