Quite ti extensive system of surface drain age has been commenced. Ditches are being dug through the lower streets where the water would naturally ac cumulate. These ditches arc in the lowest places about three feet at the top, a foot and a half at the bottom ml about two feet deep. They will be covered by the side and cro.-s-walK to as to be completely out of the way They are unprotected from the action of the water, and we fear when the floods come they will prove to be like the ''house built upon the sand Fourr.ew cisterns, also, are to be built, in such sections of the city as may be designated by the Committee ppoiiited by the Mayor to supervise the work. This is a much needed im provetnciit, as the Pre of last Wednes day fully demonstrates. Much care, however, should be taken iu locating these cisterns, and lie fact considered that ere long the water brought to town by the Albany and Sanliam Canal Company may be readily util ized in many portions of the city for the extinguishment Of tires. Fire. On Wednesday afternoon, about two o'clock a lire alarm was given, and the Albany Fire Depart mentand many citizens were on the scene of destruction almost instantly. The lire proved to be In a barn and stock shed belonging to Mr. Hurd, in tlie eastern portion of the city. The barn was an old one, thoroughly dry, and fllicd with hay. The tire spread to rapidly that it was impossible to save the burning building or any of its contents. OureiMsrgeticftrcrden, with the scanty supply of water which they could obtain from adjacent wells, pre vented the fire trom taking hold of other buildings which stood near by. This was all that could be done under the circumstances. The Are origina ted by some children playing in the hay with" inatclics. The loss Is esti mated at Jg((niance. A Little out of OrderT We- do not know who has charge of the work ot cutting Aesc drains through our city, but itL-cms to us that as. tiic work progresses the croiawalks and sidewalks should be covered up and made secure and convenient for travel. We have heard of several Instances where buggies and teams have made uarrow escapes from falling into the ditch. The city may oni of these flue mornings wake to a realization of its derelictions by finding a heavy suit fir damages pending against it. JJad .Place. Wlier the Santiam Canal mosses the Brownsville road, a bridge is badly needed, teams not be ing able to cross and recros3 with more than two-thirds of a load. We are in formed that a portion, at least, of the lumber necessary for a bridge isoii the ground, and the bridge should be erect ed at once. ClTT Taxes. Total amount of city taxes collected and reported by the City Marshall for 187 Is $3,377 30, leaving but $19 as delinquent taxes for the year. This Is a little ahead of any collecting yet done by any city tax-gatherer we have had to serve ul. Bills Allowed. Bills against the dty were allowed, on Tuesday even ing last, by the City Council, amount- 43. Busy. In the country hereabouts the plow and the seed drill are very busy. Farmers are intent on having another good harvest, and hope to be rcwaided lor their labor. Valuable House. -.Mr Frank Parton lias sold his flue pacing horse, Sconchln, to Mr. Win. Gird for four hundred dollars, coin. To be Finished. Tlie ditch down Broadalbiu street will be finished at once. It will be needed this whiter. Good Morning. During our ab sence Mr. Wm. Morgon will have charge ot the Register office. Millinery. Mrs. Allison Is now receiving a new stock of goods in her line. Give her a call. Prosperous. Gilfrey, Private Secretary to the Governor, was in this city, Wednesday, on business connect ed with the school lands. Mr. Hugh Small, traveling corres pondent of the Oregonian and also of some Eastern and European papers, was in town on Wednesday. Mr. Samuel Robinson, traveling agent of Messrs. Dancing school at the Opera House Wednesday and Thursday evenings. tlilncae Sheep. During a recent visit to the State Fail we were shown a number of varieties of sheep, ranging in breed from the Merino, Cotswolds. ect.. down to the common stock, but we have just beard of an entirely new breed, specimens of which are owned by Mr. C. J. Mnlkev. who imnorted them direct from China per good ship luiwara dames, nicy are tiescrioeu to us as being about one-third largtr than our common sheep, with a fleece varying from 18 to 20 inches in length and of remarkably fine texture. The wool is almost wholly devoid of yolk or grease and ot unusual weight. Their ears are large and drop over Tike those ot a iiotuul, while their noses are of the Homau style rounded off from the forehead down, their tails being ibout eight inches long, ranging from tour to live inches in width. They have no horns, resembliniF the cele brated Cotswolds iu this respect. Be ing possessed ot no little hardihood, Mr. Mulkev Is of the opinion that they will do well In tills State, and he pro poses to use them for breeding pur- wscs. l hey nave been quartered on William Stevenson's farm, and are of course attracting considerable attention among sheep raisers. The only ques tion ot doubt in the mind ot their owner is whether or not thev can stand our Oregon Winters, and the present movement is but an experiment. We believe this flock is the only one on this coast, consisting, as it does, of three fine bucks and two ewes. The Orezon farmers are evlnchle considerable enterprise in the introduc tion ot choice breeds ot sheep, and this is but one instance of many. Oregon llullvtin. A Law-Abidino Dog. Tliere is a knowing dog (and a yallar one at that) In town, who complies witli the letter, but not exactly with the spirit of the law in relation to muzzling canines during dog-days. He U never without a muzzle, but instead of wearing it strapped over his nose, as other does do, he carries It in his mouth, and is icverseen lit the street without it. When he halts to rest he drops it be tween Ids forelegs : but whenever he starts lie picks It up and jogs along quietly, looking as if he would say to all policemen ; "I am a la.v-abidlng Tray. As you see, I have a muzzle ; so please don't molest lne." When L 1. ... B. RICE. Albany, Oct. 29, 1878. For years we have been satisfied, says a lady, that wide sheeting Is not economical ; so we buy muslin nine eighths wide and sew the sheet iu the middle by the edges and using the machine. By the time tlie sheet Is so worn as to need turning, the thread used in sewing It together will be ten der enough to make ripping the breadths apart an easy matter. The other day, In conversation with a cot ton manufacturer, lie said : "It stands to reason that, in a web nine-fourths wide the middle must sag more or less, ami tlie texture by consequence be less firm and close than nearer the edges of the wen. My wire never uses the wide sheeting because the narrow lasts so inucn longer." . All who suffer from coughs, colds, bronchitis, croup, whoopme cough and the most to be dreaded of all.
