land, ot this city, has a radish raised
on his farm in this county that meas
ures twenty-three inches in circum
ference and weighs six pounds. Beat

Personal. John Oanter, we notice,
Is en route for his old home in this city.
Mrs. Dodd left this city for Califor
nia, on a visit to friends there, on
Wednesday.
Mrs. Brown, the mother of Mart.
V. Brown, of the Dermarat, Is lying
langerously ill at her residence in this
city. Mr. Brown was telegraphed
for, and came up from Salem overland
last night.
Dme.-A report reached this city
on Thursday that Dr. Ballard, of Leb
anon, was dying. Just before going
to press we learn that the oboverumer
Is incorrect. Dr. Ballard, we are
pleased to say, is recovering
New Goods at Lebanon. Yester
day Mr. Montague, of Montague &
McCalley, Lebanon, arrived In this
city from Portland, with a large stock
of general merchandise, clothing, gro
ceries, &c, &c, which were hauled
out to Lebanon in the afternoon , This

nesday night Inst, Mr. Beard, an elder
brother of Mr. John Beard, ot Tan
gent, was killed near that village by
the passenger train on the O. &. C.
Railroad going south. As related to
us, deceased was coming into Tangent
from the south, walking on the rail
road track. As the train approached
him, after having left Tangent, lie got
off the track, and as the last coach of
the train was passing him ho attempted
f to get upon the track again, when the
steps of the coach, it is supposed, struck
Win In the side, from the effects of
which he died In about fifteen minutes.

nolia and City Mills have gone to
grinding.
Two sixteen per cental has been
offered for wheat delivered in Portland
in December.
Bran is worth 75c per cental at the
mills.
We still have no quotations for
'vheat, as there are no buyers.
The roads are dreadful slosliy
wheat hauling almost entirely discon
tinued during the week.
Lots of "free" water in the Santiam
Cnnal now.
The third "call" on Sairtlam Canal
stock was made on the first of the
fnonth.
An Odd Fellows lodge is to be in
stituted at Lebanon next Friday night.

Mr. John Barrows, wife and
daughter, went to Salem on Wednes
day. Mrs. Barrows and daughter
will extend their trip to Dalles, for
the benefit of Miss. Ella's health.

We are sorry to learn of the illness
of our frieud, Mr. J. M. Shelley, of
Harrisburg. Ho is afflicted with
typhoid fever. We, with his numerous
friends iu Linn county, wish him a
speedy recovery.
Being somewhat behind train time
on Tuesday, and wishing toexcurshto
Salem, we are under obligations to
Mr. Arnold and the Bay Team for
putting us through in good shape on
the double-quick in time to get on
board the train. Arnold's a trump.
Fresh eggs are in demand at 25c per
dozen, while butter commands 20c per
pound. A good article of butter, we
may lie permitted to remark, is a very
scarce article in this market.
The flies are more "bothersome"
these days if any difference, than dur
ing the dog-days.
The Chief Marshal at the Salem
Capitol blow out on Wednesday, came
down on Mart. Brown, one of his
aids on the occasion, with great severity,
for 'too much foolishness" while on
the claybank cayuse pony, which he
bestrode with almost as much dig
nity as Shacknasty Jim.
Visitors and exhibitors, especially
campers, at the State B'air, have had
an exceedingly refreshing time there
during the week, owing to the pre
vailing weather. At no time, we are
reliably informed, has the mud av
eraged over three feet hi depth on the
grounds.
On the 8th, at the State Fair, in the
race for Oregon urea norses, singw
dash of a mile, Mr. Gird entered "Bid
Gird." who got away with the race
and money iu 2:03.

Mr. J. W. Williams, of Corvallis,
visited this city on Thursday to at
tend the District meeting which met
here on that day.
Mart. Lupcr's team took a spin the
other day, and succeeded in smashing
the hack to which they were attached

Howell, Harper & Co. have purchas
ed the new warehouse erected by R.
C. Kinney at Miller's Station.
Rev. & G. Irvine having resigned
the pastorate of the Willamette Church
nine miles south of this city, will now
devote his entire time to the U. P.
Church in this city.

William Cyrus, of Scio, have been ap
pointed Deputies for the organization
of Granges in Linn county.

his fields two or three weeks since,
and although attempts have repeatedly
been made to drive them off, they
stick. to him like poor relatives. He

A telegram from Madrid, Spain, on
the 7th, says : A column of 2,000 in
surgents made a desperate sortie from
(Jarthagena to-day, out were driven
back with heavy losses in killed and
wounded.
Quite a heavy snow storm was pre
vailing at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, on
the 7th.
