A sad accident occurred yesterday
about noon, by whldi it a feared a
little son of Mr. William Cross, aged
about nine years, will loje his life.
Mr. Cifiss was h.niiing wheat to town,
and as he was passing out of his pas

wheel passed over his arm and the
hack part of his head, crushing his

The mail train west last night, on the
Detroit, and Milwaukee Railroad ran
over a cow near Lowell, throwing off
several coaches and killing two passen
gers, named Wm. Bea man and Calvin
Mitchell, both of Michigan, J. 1..
Barchan, mail agent, and Burllngham,
express messenger, were severely injured.-
Several Others were injured
none seriously.
In Xew York, on the 13th, Walter
Bray, while riding on the Iront plat
form of a Thin) Avenue car struck
struck an Italian street-sweeper Oil the
head with a oar book, because lie did
not get out ol the way as promptly as
the driver wished. The wound will
probably prove tatal. Bray has boon
a rrested.
The propeller Ironsides, one of the
largest steamers on the lakes, found
ered within seven miles of Grand
Haven, on the loth. Twelve passen
gers all known to have been saved:
fourteen bodies have been recovered.

At a meeting of the Grand Lodge
1. 1 ). O. F. on the 10th, now in session
at Baltlnfore, an amendment to the
Constitution to change the time of the
annual meeting of tin? Grand Lodge so
as to permit its session at a later sea
son ol the year, in case a southern city
be selected for the place of mooting,
was adopted. Propositions to add ad
ditional qualifications for membership
to a Grand Lodge, and to change its
name, was postponed.
There is n rumor that General Rocha,
commander-in-chief of the Mexican
army, is getting up a revolution on his
own account. Kochft bus the reputa
tion of being a lighting man, and In
the Mexican army, If he rebels, he
will have plenty of followers. He is
now at Zacatecas, in command of a
large force, and is said to lie in sym
pathy with the malcontents of Saltltno
and Monterey.
Another great lire broke out in Chi
cago on the afternoon of the 17th, in a
lumber district, near corner of Seven
teenth and Hal-ted streets, raging with
groat, fury, and spreading a distance of
nearly one mile. The wind was blow
ing a gale from the southwest, carry
ing burning brands a long distance
ahead of the tiro. The entire Are de
partment were on the ground. A dis
patch from Omaha says thirty-six
block wore burned.
The wildest excitement prevails in
regard to the yellow fever in portions
ot the South. At Shrevoport, Louisi
ana, the lover is still raging, sixty per
cent, of those attacked die. "The
terrible disease seems to be increasing
its victims.
There was a violent storm on the
Black Sea last week. H was very de
structive to shipping. Seventy vessels
were wrecked south of the Bosphorus
and nearly all on board perished. At
one point: on the coast 268 corpses have
been washed ashore.
From San Diego, California We learn
that Hon. Win. X. Boblnson, defeated
Democratic candidate for the Assem
bly, has lost his reason since his defeat
became certniuly known, and will be
sent to Stockton.
The M'irL l.m- Expfm estimates
that England must import twelve
million quarters of wheat this year.
The weather throughout England to
day is wot and unfavorable for rops.
Henry Bouverlo and Win. Brand,
Speaker of the House of Commons,
and family, sailed from Loudon on the
13th, to the United States, to remain

Nineteen dead bodies of passengers
and orow of the ill-fated propeller
Ironsides have been recovered. Thirty
are known to bo lost, and two missing.
Detectives will start from New York
for San Francisco, in a few days, to
bring Irving, the self-accused Nathan
murderer, to the first-named city.
Mrs. Ben. Holladay died atthe fam
ily homestead, Ophir, Westchester
county. New York, on the night of
Wednesday, September 17th.

SIX MILLION DOLLARS FOB RECOVER

A dispatch was published a few days
ago announcing that through the In
strumeutality of the Hon. .L P. Benja
min, two ladies in Georgia had recov
ered an inheritance in France valued
at 112,000,000.
The Atlanta fGa.) HertM publishes
the interesting details :
From positive authority it is ascer
tained that Mrs. VtarlniaM. Campbell
and her niece, Mrs. Elmtna Chambers,
both of Madison. Ga., are entitled to
$12,000,0(10, now waiting in France to
be claimed by the fortunate ladies.
.Mrs. Campbell is a widow about
seventy years of age ; her niece, Mrs.
Chambers, is also a widow aged about
thirty-six. The vast property which
they have inherited belongs to the
Rennauleau estate. Information in
regard to it was received by them
about three months since, and by the
advice of a gentleman in Madison,
who says that he was once a law part
ner of the Hon. Judah P. Benjamin,
they at once wrote to the latter In
London, asking him what course to
pursue in the matter. Mr. Benjamin,
after thoroughly investigating tlie
case, wrote to Mrs. Campbell and Mrs.
Chambers that (lure was not a ques
Of doubt in regard to their claim, and
advised them to conic to Europe at
once. The property descends to these
ladies through a "Mrs. Rennauleau.
grandmother of Mrs. Chambers. Mrs.
Campbell's maiden name was Maguire,
her mother having been Mdlle. Ren
nauleau. 'They are connected with
one ot the best families in France.
Bv the terms of an agreement lo
tween Mr. Benjamin and the two
ladies the former will take one-half of
the wholeamount of the estate, and
the other half, $6,000,000, will then
fall to Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Cham
bers, the share of each being the neat
little sum of $3,000,000. Seven mil
lions and a halt are In the hands of the
bank of Franco, and $4,500,000 In tlie
hands of the Rothschilds. Mrs. Cham
bers was in Augusta on the 10th, mak
ing arrangements tor the voyage of
herself and aunt to Europe. They
will bo accompanied by a lawyer from
Savannah, ana Mr. Antolne Pioquet,
of Augusta, who goes for the purpose
of identifying theni. They will also
carry papers signed by the oldest citi
zens of Augusta, proving their identity.
They will leave tor Europe, we under
stand, next Tuesday.

regard to Alaska :
