Captain Jistes, a gentle man woll-known for many years in commaiid ot the Lake Ontario steamers, informs us that lie was the witness a tew nights since of a wonderful phenomenon on Lake Ontario, the like of which he never saw before ami Joes not expect to see again. While on his way from the St. Lawrence up the lake on the stearatug of which he is master, an J, when near the islands known as the False Ducks, and while Handing at the wheel, there sud denly burst into view the city of Oswego thirty-one miles distant with the gaslights in the streets and all the appearances that a town lighted up would present from a hill in the immediate vicinity at night The light house at Oswego, a- well as a dozen others on the Lake shore below as far as Sackett's liarooi, were distinctly seen. It was a sort of night mirage. This display was witnessed for several minutes and then slowly faded away into darkness. Such won derful spectacles are rarely seen J!ther on land or water. Rurhester (X, V.) Union. A Danbury man is the unenvied owner of a dog that is a terror to trie neighbors, purely by its snapp ing and snarling propensities, lie snaps at everybody, and knows a little of the flavor of everybody up that way. It is said that he has c'oth enough in him to make a pair of breeches tor every man on Long Island Sound. The other day a youth loaded up the end ot a stick with a mixture compounded with horse-radish and cayenne peper, and commenced shaking it through the fence at the cur and the cur flew up and caught the bait sav agely; and the boy drew away the stick so sharply that it left all the contents in the animal's mouth, and the animal chawed away on it in awful exultation tor an instant. J Then it commenced to stare, and j then spit, and howl, and weep, and j paw, and roll over and finally run i under the barn, where it remained in religious sec usion for two whole iay. Now, when anybody pokes a stick through the fence that dog don't step up. It merely looks over, as if to say: "No seasoning in mine, if you p ease." In these complaints it has no equal, and one bottlo will prove a better guarantee of Its merits than a lengthy ad vertisement. For Female Complaints, In t otitic or old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided an Influence that a marked Improvement la goon perceptible For Inflammatory and Chronic Bheumntism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indlgeslion, Bilious, Remittent and Inter mittent Fevers, Diseases ot the Blood. Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system will follow. Pin, Tape and other Worms, lurking in the system of so many thousand.-, are effectually destroyed and removed. Says a distinguished physiologist: There Is scarcely an individual on the face of the earth whose bodv Is exempt from the pres ence of worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the body that w orms exisl, bu: upon the diseased humors and slimy deposits that breed these living monsters of disease. No system of medicine, no vermifuges, no anthelmintics, will free the system from worms like these Bitters. mechanical Discases.-Pereons en gaged in Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Typesetters, Gold-beaters and Miners, as they advance in life, are subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against this, take a dose of Walker's Vi.nkuak Bit ters twice a week. In their treat ment, a purgative, exerting a powerful In fluence upon these various organs, is essen tially necessary. There Is no cathartic fur the purpose equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vine gar Bitters, aa they will speedily remove the dark-colored viscid matter with wlilch the bowels are loaded, at the same time stlmulsting the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring ihe healthy functions of the digestive organs.
