Insane. Mrs. Nancy Jane McCoy,
consort of George J. McCoy, was
brought before Judge Tandy on the
charge of insanity on the 6th inst.,
and after a careful examination by
Drs. Graham, of (Jorvallis. and Gam
ble, of this city, was adjudge! to he
insane. The unfortunate lady was
taken to the Insane Asylum at East
Portlaud, her husband and father ac
companying her on the sad journey.

steamboat Excursion. This
infilling, at about eight o'clock, the
ipveruor (Trover will leave her wharf,
loaded with excursionists to Corvallls.
The excursion is intended more ese
clally, for the children of the Sunday
Schools ; and it Is hoped that all,
either in care of the teachers or pa
rent", will he present on the occasion.
The children and others will meet at
theM. E. Church at 7, o'clock this
morning, will form in procession and
march to the boat. All are exacted
to provide themselves with suitable
lunch, as the boat will not retifru till
evening. Fare for the round trip has
been put at 25c per passenger, so that
all who feel disposed to go can do so.
We hope the little folks, as well as the
elders who participate, may have an
elegant time.
Firemen's Picnic. Our Firemen
give a picnic on Tuesday next at
Hacklemau's beautiful grove, about
one mile east of the Court House, to
which everybody is invited. The
grounds will be specially prepared for
the occasion; swings will be erected,
croquet and base ball grounds will be
laid out, so that a choice of pastimes
will be afforded to all. Gen. Brown
of the Democrat, has been selected to
deliver the oration, and will doubtless
be Interesting and racy. It will cer
tainly prove an Interesting occasion,
and everybody will certainly be there.

V'ERif Low. As will be seen by
advertisement in this issue, the Oregon
Steamship Company's Steamboats will
hereafter carry freight to and from
Portland, to all points on the Willam
ette river, for the sum of one dollar
per ton. Tills is a fraction over three
cent per bushel for wheat.
Personal. Dr. Rice and family,
who fir some months pat have been
residing at Lawai Indian Reservation.
I. T.. returned to their old home in
thl city on Tuesday, all enjoying
splendid health.

At Uarrisburg, a tew days since,
Willie Briggs, son ot W. W. Brigg-.
miller in Smith, Gerst & Co.' mill,
whileascendinga ladder iu thegranery,
was suddenly taken with cramp in the
arms, and fell to the floor, a distance
of twenty-two feet, breaking no bones
but bruising his body considerably,
causing partial paralysis. At jast .ac

the use of his limbs, and his phy sician
thought his complete recovery was as
sured. ,

Tiie new hall. Pacific Opera Bouse,
on Tuesday evening next, will doubt
less bold the largest and gayest assem
blage ever gathered in this city to trip
the "light fantastic." The hall is
large, well lighted and ventilated, and
tlie fire boys will see that every coin

tendance. It will be a festive occasion,
such a one as is only to be enjoyed

The wife of our junior editor has
been very sick for several days past,
but is nt present slowly convalesing.

Mrs. Howard, aged 32 years and 30
days. Funeral services on Thursday.
At his residence in Big Valley. Cal
ifornia. April 22d. 1873. Mr. Francis
Simpson, aged 67 year.
Mr. Simpson was one of the early
settler of Llrih county. For nineteen
years he resided some four miles south
of Albany, near the place now owned
Jiv his son George. Two year ago lie
removed to Bi Valley wliere bis death
occurred. The many aciu'aiiitances
of Mr. Simpson will regret to hear of'
his decease, and In relative in this
county will receive their sincere con
dolence in tin their deep affliction.

Judge Bingham, of Ohio, will, it is
believed, receive the St. Petersburg
Mission, made vacant by the death of
Hon. Jas. L. Orr.
A Commission will be sent to nego
tiate with the Sioux and other Indians
on the reservation in Southwestern
Dakota for a modification of the treaty
of 1833, so a to withdraw from tlie
Indians the privilege of hunting out
side the reservation. The Commission
will consist of three or four person,
and the Board of Indian Commission
ers will probably name the chairman.
