The Onteanlal Anniversary of the
H lulIU-.
Fkiaow Citizens of Linn: The
undersigned committee appointed at
the suggestion of the Hon. A. J. Du
fur. Acting Commissioner for Oregon,
call your attention to the Act of Con
gress of March 3d, W72, "To provide
for celebrating the OneTHundredth An
niversary of American Independence,
by holding an Industrial Exhibition of
Arts. Manufactures, and product-; of
the Soil and Mines in the city of Bhil
adelphia, in the year 1S70."
It is intended by appropriate cere
monies, to celebrate the completion of
the first century of our Republic, on
the site ot its birth, and amidst scenes
hallowed by the early struggles and
triumph of freedom.
Suitable grounds are already provid
ed, capacious and magnificent build
ings will be erected in which to exhibit
our national progress since our birth
into the family of nations ; setting
forth the natural and industrial re
sources of the country, their develop
ment, and our progress in the arts that
benefit mankind, in comparison with
thoe of older nations.
The Exhibition will remain open
six months, from the Kith of April,
1S7'). All the nations of the earth are
invited to participate in the privileges
of the Exhibition, which will thus be
made a grand panorama ofthc world's
progress,
Millions of our citizens, and vast
numbers of other nations, will be at-
! tract ed to the scene of this magnifi
cent spectacle the first International
! Exhibition in honor of Republican
Government : the world bearing gar
I land to adorn the brow of Libert', on
! the first ceiitennary of her highest
i achievement.
This unprecedented occasion will
doubtless arouse the spontaneous en
j thusiasm, pride and gratitude of our
entire nation ; will be the era ot good
feeling and patriotic union ; and will
be attended with a more impressive
grandeur, than has ever heretofore
been witnessed in our own. or even in
other lands.
The preliminary preparations, and
general direction of the Exhibition,
is confided by law to a Board of Com
mlssiouers, consisting of one. person
from each State and Territory, nomin
ated by their respective Governors.
A grand stock company has been
formed under charter from the V. B.j
the Body Corporate known as the Cen
tennial Board of Finance, to, termi
nate when the object of its creation
shall be accomplished.
I The Corporation consists ot the per
j ons named in the act and their legal
j successors ; being two members for
! each C. S. Senator and one for each
! Congressman anil Delegate,
The Capital Stock shall not exceed
I $10.1)00,000, and is divided into shares
of Ten Dollars each, and apportioned
to the States and Territories in the ra-
: tio of population.
Two dollars in currency is to be
paid at the time of subscription, on
! each share taken : not more than two
j dollar- per share slcll be assessed at
I any time, and !)ij day notice given in
! each case. The receipts of the Exhi
j bit ion will largely reimburse the fund,
and the honor of the nation will be in
I pledge for the redemption of every
' liability Incurred : so that it is lm
! probable that the full amount of the
; subscription will ever be called for.
j Parties properly authorized to take
subscriptions will visit the different
parts of the county with subscription
books duly authenticated, and all mon
eys will be paid over to W. S. I.aild.
Esq.. of Portland, the Treasurer of
the Commission for Oregon.
A finely engraved certificate will lie
issued to" every stockholder, hearing
the signatures of the President and I .
s. Treasurer ; these will be transferrin
bio under rules and regulations to be
made known, and will entitle the
holder to the privileges of the Exhi
bition. At the close of the Exhibition, all
the property will be sold and the pro
ceeds and other unexpended income,
will lie divided to the stockholders.
Other International Exhibitions
have yielded a net income, and we
may reasonably expect lor this the
highest pecuniary success.
Oregon has been allotted to her 2.000
shares, 200 to be taken In Linn county.
The proiect is that over one third of
this amount will be taken in the city
of Albany.
The Executive Committee will take
measures to address the people f the
different sections of the county at an
ear!',' day.
This great national enterprise, ap
pealing alike to our State pride, and
ltrlotism, will not fail, we believe,
to secure the heartiest response and be
crowned with complete success.
