An advance in iron is looked for In England, owing to the scarcity and consequent advance In the price of fuel. Continued heavy rains, filling np the works with water, Is claimed as justification for asking an advance in price of fuel. Wheat quotations in San Francisco are$l 75100 lbs. Portland bnjrers offering 1 65 V cental for wheat, although $1 60 it was thought could 1 obtained for large lots. Massey, the latter was shot through both arms. The salmon catch is said to be very liglrt this year. The proposed terow of settlement with the Modocs are not relished by the Jacksonville people. Should a favorable opportunity occur, there is a determination felt to entorce the process of the Court. Capt. Jack Is now said to have 43 warriors. Frank Merritt, of Treka, Cal., has received permission to open a sutler store at the military camp, in the Mo doc region. At San Francisco, on the 3d, Clias. Blackenhouse was stabbed by Jos. Behrens. At Ogden, on the 3d Inst, a ruffian named Robert A. Lee, tuider the pro tense of assisting an Italian lady, who, with her infant had just arrived from Piedmont, got her into his office aud brutally accomplished his object. He escaped. Mr. Ot. W. Hobart has received his appointment as Postmaster at Dallas, vice J. D. Lee resigned. The Bulletin says the Washington Guard, of Portland, propose to attend the National Centennial Celebration In a body, chartering a car for their ac commodation. John Jacobs was inaugurated Governor of South Carolina on the 4th. A woman died in New York on the 4th, having symptoms of yellow fever. Investigation was to be made. By a recent collision in the har bor of Cadis between the ships 7Ve Muriat and Cilam, it is sta ted that ninety persons were drown ed. The inaugural being concluded, congratulations followed from friends, andPresideiit Grant soon after left, in a carriage, for the White House, es corted by the procession which, mean while, hail reformed and taken up the line of march. The present winter is pronounced one of the mildest ever known in Europe. It has been very surpris ing in France and Germany. A reward of 1,200 was offered for ap prehension' of the swindlers. The ship Chacabwy from San Francisco for Liverpool lately ran into the ship Torch in the Irish Channel. The former sank in a few minutes drowning 20 of the crew. The latter also went down, but all on board were saved.
