bia paper contains this statement!
"There is n large mountain 300 feet
high and 300 yards in diameter at the
liac at the southern end of the prai
rie, about t wenty-flve miles from Olym
pia. and scattered over the prairie for
a distance of fifteen miles are many
smaller mounds, not more than fouV
feet high and twenty or thirty In diame
ter. Many conjectures have been made
in the last twenty years as to what
could have caused so singular a forma
tion, but no one was ever curious
enough until within the last few days
to make any examination of the Inte
rior of these mounds. A few days ago
one of tiie engineers of the North Pa
cific Railroad opened one of them and
found the remains of pottery ; and a
more thorough examination of others
revealed other curious relics, evidently
the work of human hands; in fact, iii
every mound that has yet been opened,
there is some relic of a long-forgot
ten race discovered."
