of Oregon, (Tied at his home near La
Grande on the 14th Inst. He was a
native of Ohio, ft years old, and came
to this State in lSOO. He was well

The following is said to have occur
red at Boise City a short time ago : A
gentleman sat down to supper, and
pointing to an object he had discovered
in the hash, indignantly inquired of

"That," said the waiter, "appears to
be a wrist-baud, with a sleeve button
attached.'' "Well," said the custo
mer in wrath, "do you think that a
proper thing for a man to find in Ids

Chas. A. Knssell, of Sun Francisco,
the murdcrct of James Crntly, has
been sentenced to he hung on the 21st
of March next.
It is slated that the Canadian horse
disease has broken out in tlie northern

horses had died, and others were like

found for it.
It is believed that vicious Indian
warriors, belonging to various tribes
in California, Oregon. Idaho and Ne

Governor, on Wednesday last, made
out a list of lands embracing 1,840
acres, selected for Capitol building
purposes and caused the same to be
transmitted to the La Grande Land
Office for approval, said lauds being
located in that district. Also a list of
the same class of lands embracing
641 30-100 acres, located In the Ko-e-burg
district. Under the Act of Con
gress admitting Oregon intothe Union,
ton sections ol land were granted to
the State to assist in the erection of
public buildings. The last Legislature
passed an Act appropriating the pro
ceeds of the sale of these lands to
assist in building our State Capitol,
and hence the Governor's action in
the matter. The remainder of the
grant will be selected in a short time.
A party of eleven tourists, from
England, on a trip around the world,
arrived in Salt Lake not. long since.
Col. Perry who was seriously
wounded in the Modoc tight, was
taken to his quarters at Camp Harney.

In the late Modoc fight the troops
captured five Indian ponies ladeiied

Benton county : "In consequence of
some misunderstanding or blunder
somewhere about 240 acres of valua

received therefor. Two hundred acres
belonging to William Gird and forty
to Geoi'ge W. Houck, of this place. As
near as we can understand the matter
stands thus: When the final proof was

tion act, ' the Willamette Valley and

half in each district. Final proof had
been regularly made upon the whole

Hon. J. IL Mitchell took his depart
ure from Portland for Sail Francisco
last Saturday ou the steamer Aju. A
salute of thirteen guns were fired in
honor of Hie event. A large crowd
were prstent to witness the departure,
and" bid the honorable gentleman
good-bye.
A Lodge of the degree of Rebekah is
soon to be organized at the Dftlles.
