'flie money market in Portland ts
reported easier, ami the prospect aliead
flattering.
The Oriflamme sailed from San
Krandco on Wednesday, and Is due
in Porttairi to-morrow.
Threo new ships are reported en
route for Portland by tlie Liverpool
Shippmu ami Memintile Ctsrtlf the
Norwegian ship Mathiltle. from New
port, Wales, which sailed September
Mi; the British ship Duncaim. Cham
bers, from Newcastle on the Tyne,
November 15th. and the American
ship George A. Holt, Nortou, from
Sunderland, November 27th. The
announcement that these vessels were
on the way here surprises our expor
ter, says the Britain, and they are
inenwed to discredit it. Although their
arrival Is In the distant future, yet
we can but hope that the announce
ment that they are on the way may
prove beneficial to our producers.
Tt Is announced that the Barracoota,
now lying at East Portland wharf,
awaiting cargo for the United Kingdom
Will take about 500 tons of flour on
her return trip. As this will be tlie flrst
shipment of AW made direct to Liv
erpool from Portland, tlie result will
be looted for with no little Interest.
Tie Portland Britain oi Thursday
says that European Arms, in connec
tion with well known Chinese capital
ists, are negotiating for the purpose of
placing a line of steamers, six in num
ber, between Portland and China.
Kour vessels are already completed,
ind two more arc being onstnteted at
Hong Kong. It b asserted the Hue
will be In running order by tlie 1st of
next May. Forelgu trade b one of
the needs of the State, and we hope
hls new line will become a fixed In
stitution, adding rapidly to tlie wealth
of our State.

The principal topic among onr farm
ers during the week, has been the
feasibility of erecting a warehouse and
wharf, to be owned and controllal by
tlie formers of Linn county, at Astoria.
At tlie suggestion of farmers, Mr. Low,
one of our most enterprising farmers,
some flays sluce, went down to Astor
ia, for tlie propose of ascertaining
upon what terms a suitable site tor a
wardionse could be obtained there.
After due consultation with the' own
ers of property suitable for the erec
tion 'of such contemplated enterprise,
lie returns with the report that a water
front of over 1,000 feet front,' every
way desirable, can be obtained free.
The? provision being that the party
or parties to whom the deed for tlie
said water front Is made, shall erect
without delay suitable buildings there
on for the reception and storage of
grain. This Is a more favorable prop
osition than could have been expected,
a proposition, too, that may never be
made again; and if the farmers of
I. inn comity are in earnest In this
matter, In this offer tliej can see tlieir
opportunity. Tt Is a matter, however,
i hat will mt Mfcntt of delay, and if
the desired object Is to be secured, no
time like the present for suitable action.
Writh the erection of a grand wai
house and wharf at Astoria, with suit
able structures In this city, tlie pro
ducers of Linn county have entire con
trol of tlieir products. At (he present
time it costs 14c for each bushel of
wheat shipped from Albany to Port
land, and 12c per bushel from Port
land to Astoria, a total of 28e ier
bushel, which, of course, must be
taken into consideration by the buyer
when purclKtsing from the producer
liere. Of course, too, In handling the
grain so often, tliere Is much wastage.
If tlie Fanner's Clubs throughout the
county, as now proposed, unite and
build their own warehouse or ware
houses in this city and at Astoria,
they can then ship their grain direct
from this city to Astoria at a cost of
0c per busliel, if not at a less figure,
which will result in a saving to tlie
producer, as freights now stand, of 17c
per bu.-ltel. On 600,000 bushels of
wheat there would be a saving to tlie
farmers of Linn county, In the matter
of freight, between this city and As
toria, the neat little sum of 185,000
per annum or if, as contended by
many, Linn county produces 1,000.000
bushels ot surplus wlieat, the saving
onnnallv unolil he 1 70.000. Which
w olilil urn dr. if not entire I v cover, the
entire expense of erecting warehouses,
both heie and at Astoria. Space pre
cludes further remarks on this subject
to-day.
