The Democratic City Convention for nominating suitable ; persons as candidates to fill the various city offices, it is understood, transpires this (Friday) evening, at the Court .! House. The only Democratic candidate for Mayor that we have beard men-' tioned favorably, Is Mart. V. Brown, j of the It'iixKivt. Mr. Ilerren will j doubtless be re-nominated for Record-; cr, as will also, doubtless, Mr. Kuhn fbt tlie Trearoryship. Tlie Republi can CotiTentiou meets on the night following, at the same place. If tlie Convention selects and puts in nomi 5 nation good, reliable, bedrock Repub licans, men who have an interest in tlie growuAnd prosperity of our city, the whole Republican ticket will be elected. Let the deliberations of tile Convention be to this end then.and all will I well. Hoping for the best, we await its action. Ochooo. A private letter received in this city from Mr. A. E. The usual examination of classes at the close of each term has been pro gressing in the Albany Collegiate In stitute this week. The attendance of patrons and visitors has been sonie wliat limited in number, though the exercises have been quite pleasing and satisfactory to those who have attend ed. The enterprise and earnestness of President Warren, his good judgment iu procuring and retaining skillful and conscienton instructors for the differ ent deMirtinents, his kind and pateriial administration, liave succeeded in placing, the Institute iu a wry favora ble light before tlie public, and a sub- stantial growth and increasing pros ' perity are the results. After listening j to the examination exercises of a I couple of classes, last Wednesday after noon, wmcn were sansiactory, we were conducted to tlie two furnished Halls of the two literary societies of the Institute, the KnxMphtXui, belong ing to the young ladles, and the Sigma Phi. belonging to the young gentle men. Tliese are deservedly the pride of the Institute. Hundreds of dollars have been expended in fltrnlshing these rooms, and for taste and cozy ness. and beauty and comfort, as well as adaptation for the purpose intended, they are unique. Turee-ply carpets cover the floors, cushioned settees, chairs, tables curtains, etc., for ease, convenience ami taste, are provided. The emulation between the two socle ties, equally as generous as ambitious, which has resulted in tbetiirnishing of tliese beautiful Halls, is commendable. Xo collegiate institution can hope for a substantial growth, until snch socie ties, with their Halls, have been estatv llslied. If we were to make a discrim ination between tlie two Halls In the Institute, tor eozyness and richness of apienrance. we would be compelled to choose tlie ErWAitn ; for as one of tlie Si yum lhfi said : Tliey can make a good many things and put in their Hall that we can't. But tlie fact is. the young ladies are more refined in tlielr tastes, world without end, than tlie other sex. and always will come out a little ahead iu a contest of that kind. Tiiere is a third society, just forming, at the Institute, made up of the children. They -call themselves tlie Aesthetic. As they are just be ginning, no ball has been furnished by them. A new feature of the Institute, and otic which is highly appreciated by all of the larger pupils, istbeestab- Hshment of a department of tele graphy. Tlie wires have been brought into the building, an apparatus put up, and instruction is daily Imparted by a skillful operator in that art. Tlie certainty of tlie completion to this city of the Albany & Santlam Canal, early iu the coming Summer, affording almost unlimited water power for the propulsion of all kinds of machinery woolen mills, saw mills, flouring mills, etc. as well as affording a sate channel fhr tlie cheap inuisnf iiio.i of the tl.ie-t tim ber in tlie State. I attracting tlie at tention of capitalist' and others to our city, and real estate, which has been much depressed, owing to tlie tight ness in the money market, is again looking up. If tfi proper steps are now taken by our citizens, to place the advantages iiosseweu by Albany over any other oint in the Central Valley, in good sliae before the public, we can confidently look for an influx of population and capital next season, which will lie sensibly realized by every department of trade and busi ness throughont this community. While weeujoy many advantages that. If properly used, would Insure the rapid growth and prnsierity of our city, we lack tlie capital necessary to a proper improvement ot them. Then It Is certainly onr Interest, the inter est of rlK wltole community, to invite capital to come to us. to offer such in ducements a would secure at once the aniouift needed to open op such branches of industry as could 1k most j profitably pursued, and which would confer, in the shortest time, the great- j est benefits to the greatest "umber of onr citizens. Let those who feel an interest in this 'matter who wotl'd like to "push on " In the world, and at the same time, see his neighbor thrive, think over this matter. If we wish population, capital, skilled work men, the advantages offered by onr city, socially as well as in a business point of view, must be spread broad cast over the land. Shall it be done ? The Sunday school in charge ot Elder J. A. Campbell. Superintendent, is becoming more attractive ot late, yet there are a certain cltss of people that seem to think it is only a place for children, so they do not attend. This Is not as it should be, If the parents of children would take more interest in the sdiool, and attend regu larly, the children would soon follow their example. The time of meeting is 3 o'clock P. M.j but, on the second Sunday in each month, this time is changed to 10 o'clock A. M., in order to give everybody an opportunity to hear Rer.
