Good Templar's Entertainment.
Tbe dramatic entertainment given
by the Good Templars in their Hall In
this city last Tuesday right, was large,
ly attended, and gave very general
satisfaction. The drama of "Ten
Nights in a Bar Room." so vivkl in
its representations of the various ex
periences in the life of die Inebriate,
was well performed in most of its,
characters. Tbe audience seemed to
regard the representation of tbe char
acter of " Switcbel" with tbe most
favor. Tbe songs rendered In charac
ter, by Messrs. Hart and Clement,
were very good and amusing. "A
Scene in an Albany Bar Room during
tbe Fair." was folly up to Albany's
beat lick in that line, and possibly a
Utile beyond. It was a splendid repre
tentatkMi of a saloon row. The Bar
ber Shop scene was funny, as tbe
laughter all over the house Indicated.
Tbe last act was a " side-splitter," a 1
laogh-and-grow -fat-er. sure. We
laugh yet. Give us more of 'em.

Splendid News. Here's a para
graph from a San Fraodaco market
review ol Nov. 5th :
" The produor market is rapidly im

ly stated would effect this result. The
supply of grain does not equal the de
mand. The agents of the Bank and
Krletllander are scouring the country
to obtain alt the outside lots before the
advance, which is now inevitable, com
mences. $1709175 Inve been offered
for lots in store at Stockton, deliver
able within thirty days. It is the
general belief that choice lots of wheat
will command 2 within the current
month."
We hope the above is reliable, and
that the advance in price will reach
this settlement at an early day.

Friend Van : The election having
passed off quietly, and everything set.
lied hack In their regular routine, I
thought I'd pen you a line,
The men at work mi the A. & S.
Canal voted as follows : for Grant, 3
for Greeley, and several bedrockers
not voting.
We enjoy life here around our huge
camp fires. We liavc erected our
shanticwith lieavy timbers, setting
plank upright, leaving spice in the
center ot the roof for smoke to escape,
consequently leaving our lire In ien
space. Our town grew finely for one
day. 20.000 feet of lumlicr lieing used
up in t hat -pace of time. Determined
not to be behind tbe balance of the
world in improvements, we are now
! looming the river, ami have chartered
one mill on the ftuitlam to saw Imn
lier for the express purpose ot having
t tie one thing needful for improving
our city Emmasville. We can liear
distinctly tlie stroke of the large bell
at Lebanon, and thought we heard
Taylor lecturing but they must come
to us or they will not llourisli.
The canal is progressing as rapidly
;is could be expected with such in
clement weather as we have been hav
iug. So much rain has fallen as to re
tard the digging in the deep cut"
materially. Two weeks of good
weather, however, would enable the
contractor to go through it like a mice.
Alter tbe canal is finished the finest
kind of lumber can be floated to
Albany, whicli alone would be of the
greatest advantage to her, beside tbe
additional interest of an almost un
limited water power which it would
afford for the running of mills, etc.
Mr. Morris contract is for 3,500
feet which takes che canal to the edge
of the prairie. Tbe cutting averages
twelve feet in depth, twenty feet wide,
at the bottom and sloped one by one.
Tlie cutting is all the way through
timber, and some of tlie trees and
old stumps tliat must be removed are
worthy of mention for their size, one
of them taking forty yards of dirt to
midermluerit, and three weeks steady
work to get it clear for the plows.
Work will be steadily pushed on the
c tutu mm the heavy rains should
cause the Sautiam to overflow its hanks.
There is now 800 feet of tlie canal com
pleted, and 1,250 feet dug a depth of
eight feet.
Jase. Wheeler has a number of
hands engaged in putting in a head
gate at the mouth of the ditch.
