They have anticipated that many,
if not the entire Werman Republi
can vote of the country, would be
influenced to follow the political
movements of this eminent leader.
Herein has Democracy misjudged
entire')' the German Republican
character. A large percentage of
that element is composed of men of
the best and most liberal culture,
aud but few are found ot the entire
class who cannot read and investi
gate. Whi'e there may be some
who esteem the interests of the coun
try of so little moment and who
are so reckless of personal character
as to sell their influence and their
vote to tne iiigtiesi nwr ineir
lie found in other classes. The
great majority of German Republi
cans arrive at political determina
tions, as they do at their religions j
principles, by conviction.
Personal I
nifliriietism cannot swerve
them
from the line of settled conviction.
They are too conscientious aud sterl
ing in their charrcters to be led
into permanent error by the mag
netism of oratory or position. They
weigh the principles preseuted, and
their estimate ot the man is measur
ed by his ability to develop the
truth, and his consistency in put
ting it in personal practice. 1'hc
German Republicans of the coun
try have seemed to watch with
deep iuterest the course which
Sehurz has seen proper to take, but
they have not endorsed him. Ger
man Democrats, however, have
been delighted with the opposition
of Sehurz to. General Grant and
the Republican party, and have
said and done all they could to
render his influence paramount
among tlie German Republicans.
Their object has been to centralize
the German element of the nation
in one body of opposition to the
present Republican Administration
and party. They must realize to
day how entirely futile their Labors
have been. While Carl Sehurz has
leen using every device which
ability and skill have suggested to
his willing mind to accomplish this
end, and has endeavored by his
versatile and dextrous tongue to
make it appear that he was actuat
ed by an earnest desire to promote
the poblK! good ; and while the
i ierman Democrat, hitherto his bit
terest enemy, has been so emphatic
in his endorscmeut and so loud in
his praise, the German Republican
has not been misled from a correct
estimate of their real characters and
motives. In Sehurz he has seen
the unprincipled, selfish demagogue.
In the latter the overanxious, un
scrupulous partisan, esteeming in
consistency a political virtue if it
weakens an enemy. Entertaining
such an estimate he lias turned
away from their influence as from
contagion, and to-day is stronger in
his fealty to tlie Republican party
than before this treachery raised its
diabolical head.

Confusion still reigns in the camp
of Democracy. The Democratic
press is just as variable now in opin
ion and policy as it was previous to
the Cincinnati farce, which was so
anxiously looked forward to as the
"curealL" While some, lead off
in point of numbers by the South,
are disposed to possum down on the
rim at least of old "White Hat,"
lots of others would rather play
"rood," by nominating a candi

The Uxk Swindle.
Governor G rover, Teal and the
rest of the apologists for the Wil
lamette Falls, Canal and Lock
improvement, have tried from the
first, and are now using their best
powers of invention and sophistry
to cover up its real character. They
have endeavored to convey the im
pression that the contract given by
the Legislature to the Company now
making the improvements, stipu
lates that the Company shall con
struct the locks of "stone, iron and
cement," principally, thus making
them strong, durable and lasting.
The contract, however, includes
wood, and it is so loosely drawn
up, as to stipulate no particular
amount or quantity of "stone, iron,
cement" aud wood to lie used, thus
leaving the contractors open to tlie
exercise of their own discretion.
In this lies the swindle, the dishon
esty in this matter. The Company
can build the locks largely of wood,
as the Farmer says it is informed

Gov. Grover will not lie by saying
that the locks are being built ac
cording to contract. Tlie, decep
tion comes in, though, where the
Governor endeavors to make it ap
pear that "stone, iron and cement"
are to be used, mainly. The de
ception in this is more apparent
when we consider that the main
argument used by the supporters of
this swindling measure, to justify
the giving of the contract to the
present Company for 75,000 more
than was bid by the P. T. Com
pany, was that the former were to
build the locks of "stone, iron and
cement," principally, while the P.
T. Company were not. The sworn
statement of Mr. Asa A. McCully,
of Salem, Oregon, aud tlie state
ments of others have long since
shown tliat the P. T. Company
agreed to take the contract substan
tially as given to tlie present com
pany. They would have taken
the contract, in good faith, to build
the locks around the falls of the
Willamette of the same character,
and under the tame restriction
and provision as is now provided
for by law, for one hundred and
twenty-five thousand dollars, which
would have been a saving of seventy-five
thousand dollars to the
State.
A correspondent ot the Orego-
nian says that Mr. Burnett, the
Democratic nominee for Congress,
got on a "spree" at St Helens, and
became thoroughly drunk. Poor
man 1 H is chagrin and distress at
being so terribly slatliered by Judge
Wilson, drove him to desperation
at that point, aud he sought tem
porary relief in "rot gat"
Therc is one Democratic editor
in Oregon, it seems, who lias not
got over the old penchant of indulg
ing in threats, dire and bloody.
The Portland Herald has lashed
itself into such a state of frenzy in
regard to the "mouopoly" question,
as to give expression to sentiments
more adapted to the blood-thirsty
Ku Klux of the South, than to any
other class. The logic of its posi
tion is, that if the Democracy can
not accomplish their purposes in this
State at the next election, that
somebodjr must lie killed ; blood !
must run. It thinks that "Liberti
cides" deserve death, and it inti
mates that Holladay isa"Liberti
cide." This .matters too much of
assassination to suit our fancy. It !
South tried tlmt, and tlie thing has
been tried once before here in Ore
gon, but did not succeed. One
Southern "fire eater" was hardly
equal to five "Yankees," it will be
remembered was the lesson of the re
bellion. It the editor of the Her
aid has gone crazy, we are sorry for
him, and can make due allowance
for his foolish talk. No sane man
ought to think of trying to frighten
Republicans into going contrary to
their convictions. Knowing their
rights, they dare maintain, and are
equally ready to defend the rights
of others.
The Real Jlonoolltw.
Oregon Democrats effervesce like
ginger pop and sometimes run over
on the question of monopoly. Every
tiling ' the Republican narty
favors now-a-days is a monopoly,
according to their representation.
The? seem to be hardly aware that
they are, practica'Iy,the worst mon- j
opolists in the State. That, or else j
they arc very cheeky. Look at the
charter given to the Lock Company. '
The P. T. and W. T. Companies
received an average of twelve cents j
Iter ton for freight-r-a reasonable
amount. The charter to the Lock 1
Company, however, allows it to
charge fifty cents per ton for freight,
the privilege to be enjoyed for
twenty years. They not only favor
this Company to the tune of 75,
000 of the school money, but they
give them thirty-eight cents more
per ton for freight than was charged
by the otlier companies. How in
consistent for such people to talk of
monopoly ! They are the real mon
opolists. A Fiendish Masxaere.
The War Department has re
ceived the details of a most fiendish
massacre by Indians, Mexicans and
negroes, of seventeen persons, in
cluding two women aud a child,
who were with a train loaded with
United States commissary stores, on
tlie way from San Antonio to Fort
Stockton, Texas, and the plunder
ing of the train. Tlie details show
it to be one of the most horrible in
the annals of Indian atrocities, says
the telegram. The victims were
tied to the wagons and burned alive;
and when Col. Merrill arrived at the
scene, blackened corpses alone re
mained. It is not known whether tin
women were burned or carried oft

New Mexico, the belief being susj
tained by the fact that deserters from
negro regiments were with them
