The moat dangerous element in
American politics to-day, is that
mercenary and depraved spirit,wliicli
in its treatment of opjxineuts, indul
ges in the vilest slander and malig
nity. The press and the stump arc
olien subsidized to these purposes.
Political opponents arc treated by
these as bitterest enemies. Their
political record is not only traduced
and held up in the most distorted
light, but their private eliaraetet
and life are subjected to the sever,
est misinterpretations ami slanders.
Their families, too, mid intimate
friends, because of these relations.

No wonder that noble, higb-miiided

slime, and scurrility, and abuse, and

No wonder they look upon politics
as a "dirty pool," and professional
politicians as men whose motives
are entirely scllish and jprcenary
High minded, lionorable, sensitive
men, can not do otherwise, and do
justice to their feelings, than shrink
back from running die gauntlet of
such contamination, In consequence

office, and patriots the exception.
The press of the country is the mosl

the medium through which politi

I a remedy be secured. If the press

! in the direction of purifying politics

now corrupt it, would have been
taken. The best of men would not
then shrink from it. The brightest
luster (if mind, the purest patriot
ism, the most exalted worth, would
drift unerringly upon the tide of
public pre'ereiice into the official
positions of the land.
