LOCAL MATTKRS. Tub Public Meeting of the Good Tcm-fcAis. The pen meeting of the Qoori Templars which was heM In their Unit last Tuesday evening, was quite largely Uended, ami was a very feasant affair. The audience was made up of tlie old, mklrtle-agerl and young, many of the last named being composed of hoys and girls. The lecular seat acoomniodatious of the UalL together with a number of temporary seats which lad been erect ed for the occasion, were litsiifflcta to accommodate the laree company. sjhI quite a s jivtil of gentlemen were oomuelled to stand. No regular pro gramme had been arranged for the evening, and hence all of the exer cises were voluntary, or prompted Dy the wishes of the audience. Mr. Peavurs was elected to preside over the Hiectine. who parfonned Ids work very satisfactorily. After prayer., the cxer- qises of the evening consisted m call ed -out specclies, Interspersed with songs from a volunteer quartette, the latter uuder (he managment or ur. Griffiu. The Wrtfes were made by Rev. Mr, Irvine, Bev Mr. Butcher, Mr. Ihnuon, Cant, Humphrey, lr. bister, and the writer of this ar ticle, the last coming third in routine. Mr. Irvine gave the Bible argument ; Mr. Butcher,, the church argument ; Mr. Uannon, the prohibition-poetic ajguoieut i Mh Humphrey, the legal aranmetit-: Sr. Lister, the thanks giving argument, and the writer of this gaveweH, nice young way said she thought it was so did we. That was our argument. Bui, to be prions, the addresses of the gentlemen, whom we have named, were all in teresting and profitable. We snggest, Itowuvsr, that short speeches, not to exceed ten or fifteen minutes each, are tar more aereeable to the reneral hearer on such occasions than longer opes, as tuey afford time for a greater qnber to bo delivered. After the apeaMng exercises were finished, tne twin generally went hi for a social qme, ana naa it. A New FEATURE. An attractive feature has Just been added to the line of study at Albany Collegiate Insti tute. A large chug! been formed, audicpyuting., roflni opened, where the fullest instauetieus ace, given in the science of book-keepmg and general business. This featare Is entirely distinct; mid., separate from the regular Collega louxse, and any one who wish es ptay avail himself of thus securing fWl instruction in the science of ac counts without pursuing a regular Col legiate course. Re-Ki.bci m. At the last meeting of the Citf Council N. H. Cranor was elected Msjorof this city. Judge Oaiior thoroughly undorstsnds the duties of the office, and taiUifirlly per forms them. He is an a We man, and in the discbarge of his diirtes as Mayor, partisan bias will have less influence in controlling hi decisions than any oher Democrat, that could have been .selected. 'Roofer the Mayor. . t Bit. Tihxg k WUKAT.-Tbe Walla Walla l uia tells of a man in Iowa who thinks lie has struck It specially rich iu securing a new veriety of wheat called White China. He tested this new variety of wheat and succcedtd in harvesting eighteen bushels to the acre, while most other verities foil be low five bushels. ElgUtaea .buslids would be considered -a terrible small crop In this valley, almost an absolute failure. Here, twenty-five bushels per acre Is a very common crop, and forty aud fifty bushels per acre are not in frequent, and this, too, with , very ordinary .ujtiyat ion, BvTTKK.-Good butter is in demand aUOeper pound. We.Jsww't seen auy real, nice sweet butter tor a coon's age. Since bran and chops have fallen in price, we hope our farm ers will look after tills matter of fresh butter. Zy cents a pound ought to fiiatmmso. Our citizens have been trimming the fruit and shade trees, grape-Tines, etv -clearing off the ruhbUi ready-for gardening as soon as tav'sflistY Quita. . The precinct primaries for the election of delegates to the County . Convention will be held on Saturday, March 2d. 1K7. just one week prlorto tin- assemb ling of tin Count Convention. We hope tint these primaries will be fully attondtttv and that active, represciita five nkttt will be elected as delegate, who wW not only esteem it a pleasure but a duty to attend the County Con vention. In this way we will be en abled1 to ubtaiu a full expression of the peoph) with regard- to (lie men whom they would choose to fill the County offices and to represent them in the Legislature. With good, honest, re IhM men as our candidates men who powoas tlie esteem and contl denee of the people, we certainly have a fair show of success in the coming election. With such a ticket we can hope to poll the full vote of the coun tyand with a full vote success is be , yond a doubt. I NEW Bakekt. Mr. John Schmecr has oioned his new Bakery and Grocery establishment on corner of Ellsworth and First streets and in vites general patronage. His gro ceries and provisions are all frvsh, anil he proves to sell them.it tlie most liberal rates. In about two weeks he will have his bakery iu running order, when he will supply our citizens with bread, crackers, etc. John is one of the best of good fellows, aud deserves a fair share of patronage. 4V 1 Where iie Had Him. Tlie other lay our old friend, Mart. Paine, Coun ty Commissioner, was badgering Nimrod Price, Ki., on the tact that he (Price) stood security for a fine of 8 60 imposed on a party for infring ing city ordinance. Nimrod turned the tables on Martin with tlie reply : I was afraid If I didn't go the fel low's security, he'd be put in tlie county jail, and he'd get out of that if he had to tear It down, and I dkln't want that building damaged any more until after election ! Thi-Wkeki.t Hack Like. Mr. W. B. Honaca Is running a hack three times per week ( Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), carrying tlie U. S. malls, from this city to Lebanon a great convenience to our people. With a No. 1 hack, good stock and low prices, Mr. Donaua hopes to give entire satisfaction to all who patronize him. Light freight and packages carefully delivered at reasonable rates. Improvements. Iu our hut issue we stated that it was the intention of Messrs. Cart n right. West lake & Morris to en eta building 24x84, ore story iu bight, on corner of Ellsworth and First streets. Since then they inform us that they have purchased 44 feet of ground instead of 34, and that tlie building will be two stories (20 feet) high instead of one. This will give them a more roomy and a much better looking building. Bru.Y for it. Tlie Qngonto has purchased a new cylinder press and a new outfit entire, and will soon ap pear in an enlarged form. A fine large building will be erected during tlie summer for its especial use. All this indicates prosperity, which it richly deserves as the leading dally of Oregon. It Ims onr best wishes for its future growth ami prosperity. Skkigiitly. Toe Portland Dm. mafic Ckroviclt, Issued daily, by Messrs. Coburu A McCabe, Is one of our sprightlie-st and most brilliant ex changes. If tlie exchequer of our friends don't run over with fatness, it will not be tor the lack of our best wishes for its success. ILandiui.i., Posters, Cards, Etc., Having added materially to our assort ment of new ami fashionable styles of type, we are better prepared than ever to execute all kinds of job printing, either plain or In colors. We are always ready to receive orders. Rapid Growth. Mr. McFadden informs us that fifty buildings were erected in Monmouth last season. He wijl build a residence, iu, Monmouth during the coining season himself. Mojomoulh is the seat of one of the most Nourishing schools in the State. OxjfjE Shave. Sir. Hale Backen sto .hju opened barber-liop,pn First below Washington street, w here he bokb himself in readiness to "lather and shave" all whs-.may call upon hhn. Exasperating. The weather for the past few days has been most ex asperating to tlie wearers and har borers of corns and rich. Pilgrims from tlie East will make a note of this, and wait till the corn season Is over. Ice. During" the late cold snap, Messrs. Carothers & Co., put up a considerable amount of Ice, which they will use in tlie msjanactitw of Ice cold Artie 'soda during the Lot jJays of Summer. Shall Pox. Considerable excite ment has been exhibited by our citi zens over the report that a case of small pox had developed In this city. A little two year ok! son of Judge Powell's was reported broken out all over with tlie small pox. Having In terviewed tlie family physician In re gard to the matter, we leam tlicse facts : The child had been sick about three weeks and is afflicted with a disease much resembling, but which lie is not satisfied Is the small pox. Par ties who have called to see the child are divided in opinion sonle being certain that it is not, and others ju t as thoroughly convinced that is tlie small pox. Probably it will be well enough to exercise care In the matter, and if it be really the small pox, the earliest notoriety should be given to tlie fart. . . Albany Danclv; C'i.vii Celebrates tlie evening of the 21 iust., next Thursday, by giving one of their pleasant and agreeable dancing par ties, at Farrisb Hall. We acknowl edge tlie compliment of tickets thereto. No doubt the occasion will be a i most pleasant one, and all who attcu1 will have gobs and heaps of fun.
