    LOCAL MATTERS.
Stronger Than Ever. Last week
we were compelled to chronicle the
fact that a man named Douglas in
carcerated lu our beautiful, symmetri
cal, two story brick, iron celled, ten
thousand dollar county jail, only just
finished and (aid for, had so far for
gotten the hospitalities thus tendered
him, tlie honor conferred nKn him M
being tlie first occupant of said OOBtty
edifice, as to get up and get leaving
his friends, the Sheriff and Demo-
cratlc county administration, ,0
uiouru for a time over tlie Insecurity
and uncertainty of jailors and jail con-
tractors. But as mourning didn't J ,rtlHj M be was minted to assist lu
succeed to any great extent in 90" I organizing Democratic c'iiIh through
curing the early return of the flown I w n,c county, and that his escape
hlrrl Ike Slioliff I OllllMl lli-i War
Ctotlie-s and offering a reward of six
bit or so to any one returning the
''bloody thief," started on the scent
Jiimself. Of course tlie thief was
no match lor our "invincible," ami
he was soon overpowered, brought
back and locked up in the beautiful
ten thousand dollar "Cundiff hotel,"
which, according to tlie highest Dem
ocratic authority, had been made more
secure than ever as secure as wore
iron couid make it. Democracy at
once took a front seat, and While de
ploring tlie fact that the "weak" spot
hi tlie elegant and fascinating ten
thousand dollar county jail had not
been discovered sooner, and stoutly
asserting that tlie aforesaid jail had
been built exactly in accordance with
the "plan and specifications," it took
occasion to crow over tlie energy dis
played in tlie early capture t f tlie
escaix prisoner, and the fact that as
the "weak" spot had been found it
would Immediate!)- be repaired aud
made stronger than ever. Vainglo
rious boast ! Read the mournful
sequel! This weak, diseased and
dying prisoner, Douglas agaiu be
comes an occujiant ot our stronger-th.UM.-vcr
teu thousand dollar jail.
After sufficiently resting from tlie
c fleets of Ids tramp, he coolly pro
ceeds to take measures to again escape,
lib plans completed, he quietly walks
out of our strotiger-than-ever ten
thousand dollar jail on Saturday and
that's, the last of 1dm ! Is it any
wonder that our county officials hate
tlie sight of a teu thousand dollar jail
so costly, yet so Insecure hi fact,
worthless for all the purposes ot a
jail? And here a conundrum suggests
itself : If our ten thousand dollar
comity jail is so much stronger on the
second escape of a prisoner than it
was on the first escape, how many
"escapes" will it take to render a
new ten thousand dollar jail necessary?
The situation is truly embarrassing.
The tax-payers will demand an ex
planation a to why so much of their
money was used iu erecting an edifice
for tlie Mcurity of criminals, which,
upon trial, proves to be so insecure !
a complete feilure, although costing
ten thousaud dollars! They will
want to know where the fault of this
insecurity lies, with the contractor or
with the draughtsman if with the
contractor, why was the jail accepted
aud the money paid therefor? if in
the design itself, why did the Com
missioners adopt such a weak affair ?
Yon see tlie situation becomes more
embarrassing. Tax-payers dislike to
tee their money expended uselessly
without an adequate return. Say they:
Had we not better return to tbe old
log jail ? It cost less, but, if any
thing, it was more secure than tbe
new Democratic, iron-celled, patent
locked, palace-like, teu thousand
dollar jail ; and if a prisoner did
escape from it, there was some excuse
on the ground of insecurity I But tbe
ict is the matter is so distressingly
embarrassing to our Democratic
frieuds, tliat we forbear further com
ments on bow to expend ten thousand
dollars of tlie people's money in erect
ing an elegant jail that prisoners no
matter how weak and puny, can "go
through" like shot through a seive 1

Falling. The price of wheat at
present seems to be tending down
ward, ami it seems to bo tlie opinion
of dealers that 75c per bnslicl will be

Is 90c. The price iu San Francisco
lias Ixhui tending downwards for
some time past, and there seems less
probability to-day of and advance to
tlie prices of two or three months ago
than ever. It is even contended that
if the crops in California prove as
good as present prospects report them
to be, wheat will decline to liOf. We
hardly believe this but it may be the
case nevertheless
