Tlie Detroit Fret Press of the 20th
u!t. dc"serilie.s an adventure by a Ger
man named Henry Outer, of Nankin
township, who was hunting a missing
cow, and got mired in a piece of
mar-hy ground. Tlie narrative con
tinues : -To his riifht. iiliotil ten feet
aw.iv, was a knoll of solid ground, on
which grew a I horn apple tree, one of
the Hums extending almost over the
man's head, and about four feet be
yond the rtachof his arms. Thinking
that if lie could get" possession of his
gun he might secure the limb, Osster
took off his suspenders, tied thent" to
gether and made a noose at one end,
and after careful and tedious work,
lassjoed the rifle aud dragged it to
him. 'l itis was after he laid been in
the mire nearly two hours, and quite
a while after dark. He was then In
duced to believe that lie had not SUilK
any for the last lialf hour; but the ex
tra weight of the gun as he held it
up sank him nearly to his hips in a
moment, aud he quit-Sly laid it down.
LITTLE TUFTS OK GRASS,
Growing up from spots of solid ground
not much larger than his hands, were
all around the man, but the moment
he took hold of one of them it would
pull away, having no real support.
Osster had a pipe with him, and lie
got this from his coat and twisted off
tlie German silver ring around the
stem. Th(! ring he broke between his
teeth, bent it lip like a hook, and then
fastened it to his suspenders, determ
ined to make an effort to reach the
limb. Time after time he made the
throw, but tlie hook failed to catch, or
slipped off; or bent out Straight, and
at ten o'clock at uignt tne victim was
Up to his hips and slowly settling.
Placing his coat and vest on either
side, he pu-lu d them dowu with his
hands, ami in this way kept his body
from settling as fast as it otherwise
would. p
HE CEASED TRYING. TO SHOUT,
Knowing that he cotild not expect
help betore another day. As Osster
did not return at dark, Storks feared
that he might have siiot himself or
met 'With some other accident, aud
walked a nilie or so in the direction
from which the man was expected to
return, and stopped within half a mile
of Where he was sinking down to
death. Returning home, he agreed
to make further search in the morn
ing, and when the time came got a
neighbor to go with him. They took
a direction qiiite distant from where
Osster was to be found, and, to be
brief, searched the woods until noon
and then determined togo to the ham
let and sec if Osster had becu there,
in coining out of the woods
THE PASSED WITHIN FORTY RODS
Of Outer, and were nearly half a mile
away,, when one of them fired a shot
at a squirrel on the fence. All night
long Osster had been slowly sinking,
and when the sun marked noon he
was up to hi shoulders iu the mire.
Healing the shot he put fourth all his
vocal strength into one grand shout,
and his voice was heard aud recogniz
ed. Even after his friends were with
in fifty feet of him he had to shout to
guide Uicm, as his head was below tlie
grass. It is needless to say that they
instantly set about the work of rescu
ing him. Logs aud brush were piled
into the swamp until they could reach
him. Finding that they could not puil
him out by the arms, the mire was
scooped away from his body, and he
was literally pried out by a lever in
serted under Ids feet.

A Scientific Experiment. Young
men w ho go tosee girls have adopted
a novel method of obtaining kisses.
They assert, on the authority of scien

the parties watch tlie flame to see it

A Singular Property. There is a
boy in New York, not ten years of
age, who all of a sudden displayed a
singular desire to steal ; but the most
singular part of tlie affair is that he
will only steal when dressed iu a cer
tain suit of clothing, and why that suit
should have any effect upon tlie child
is dillicult to 'surmise. The suit of
clothing alluded to is made of cloth
known as ticaxl.
A Yankee having told an English

of a man having swam from Liverpool

"Why, yes, of course I did; I was
coming across and our vessel passed
him a mile out of Boston harbor."
"Well, I'm glad ye 6aw htm, stranger"

Such was the effect of a distinguish
