Our citizens Avere startled liy tl;e cry of lire, about six o'clock on Friday eAening of last Aveek. Of course everybody turned out, and with the aid of our eflicient tire company and their excellent tire engine, the lire was squelched before it had' caused a A'ery heavy loss. The fire seenxs to . have originated in it blacksmith shop belonging to Feebler & TAveedale, on Fii-st street, one block west of"th' IltoisTEit bllice. For a time it was feared that the Overland Hotel, a largo two-story frame that stood on the cor ner of Washington and First streets, Avould be SAvept away, aud Avith it, in all probability, the bit-finest portion of the city. This fear liaving got iirni hold of the crowd, they began moving, the furniture out of the hotel in haste. Looking-glasses and ''mugs" were throAvn from the veranda and Aviiidows into the street, while the usual care wa-i taken to cany mattresses, feather beds, etc., carefully doAAn stairsr pand deposit them in a place of safety. In short order the hotel Avas gutted of its contents, which Avere scattered in eA--cry direction. About this time it Avas ttscertained that the hotel Avas safe, as the lire had succumbed to the exer tions of firemen and citizens, and fur ther apprehension Avas allayed. Two old buildings Avere destroyed by Ukj fire, and a portion of John Metzler'B . chair factory badly scorched, and chair timber, etc., burned up. Mefceler iti- forms us that $150 Avill make him square; Feebler fiTweedale's probable loss, 500; Ed. Murray, of the Over land, foots uj. Ids losses at .$300 mak ing a total of $950. Too much1 credit can not be given to our firemen for tho promptness and energy disphvyetl by them to saA'e the property. We be lieve it is the best job of .work Ave ever-' saw. The buildings burned Avere in the centre of a row of old Avooden buildings ; on the Avest side a chair- factory, full of all kines of combusti ble material ; on the east side a pain, shop, and next to tliat a long.,shed, full of straw the shed open at each end.. Any one can see that arrange ments for a successful lire could hardly have been better.
