"Are not medical men, fcy the
promiscuous ordering of intoxicat
ing tlriuks for their patients, an
swerable for much of the drunken
ness which is now the great curse
of our land ? If so, instead o send
ing your patient to his own wine
cellar or the public house, would it
not lx? safer and letter to prescribe
alcohol in the regular form of medi
cine, as the Pharmacopoeia con
tains many formula for the adminis
tration of wine and alcohol ? "With
regard to the prescription of alco
holic beverages, I will relate a cir
cumstance which occurred to me
some veal's ago, the results of which
made a deep impression upon my
mind. I was not then a teetotaler
would that I. had been ! but I con
scientiously, though erroneously, be
lieved in the health-restoring prop
erties of stout. A liard-working,
industrious, God feaTiug man, a tee
'totaler of some years standing, suf
fering from an abbess iu his hand,
which had reduced him very much,
applied to mo for advice. " I told
him the only medicine he required
was rest ; and to remedy the waste
.going on in his system, and to re
pair the damage done to his hand,
lie Avas to support himself with a
bottle of stout daily, lie replied,
I cannot take it, for I have been
some years a teetotaler.' 'Well,' I
aid, 'if you know better than tlie
doctor, it is no use applying to me.'
Believing as I did then that the
nlriuk would really be of service to
him, I urged liim to take the stout
as a medicine, which would not in
terfere with his pledge. He looked
anxiously iu my lace, evidently
'weighing the matter over in his
-mind, and sorrowfully renlied :
" Doctor, I was a drunken man once ;
.1 should not like to be one again.'
"He was, much against his will,
prevailed on to take the stout, and,
in time, recovered from his sickness.
When he got well, I of course
praised up the virtues of stout as the
means of saving his life, for which
he ought ever to be thankful, and
rather lectured him on his foolish
ness for being such a fanatic (that's
the word) as to refuse taking a bot
tle of stout daily to restore him to
to his former health. I lost sight
of my patient for some months, but
I am sorry to say that one fine sum
mer's day, when driving through
of our Dublin thorough fares. I

s:w a poor, miserable, ragged look
ing man leaning against the door of
a common public house, drunk, and
incapable of keeping an erect jxsi
tion. Kven in his poverty, druken-ne-ss,
and misery, I discovered it was
my teetotal patient, whom I had,
aiot long ago, persuaded to break his
pledge. I could not be mistaken. I
liad reason to know him well, tor lie
liad been a member of the Atetho
dist church, an indefatigable Sun
day School teacher, a prayer leader,
who?e earnest appeals for the salva
tion of others I had often listened
to with pleasure and edification.
I immediately went to the man and
was astonished to find the change
which drink, in so short a time had
-worked in his appearance. "With
manifest surprise, and looking earn
estly at tle poor wretch, 1 said,
'S ? is this you?' With a stag
from the public house ! had pat
ronized the day before; Here in a
hole none but the drunkard could
inliabit, I found him laid upon a
led of straw, feverish and prostrate
from the previous days debauch,
abusing his wife because she could
not give him some more drink she,
standing aloof with tears in her
eyes, broken down with care and
grief, her children dirty and clothed
in rags all friendless, and steeped in
ixvertv. "What a wreck wax there !
"Turned out of the church in
which he was once an ornament, his
religion sacrificed, his usefulness
marred, his hopes of eternity blasted,
now a poor dejected slave to his
passion for strong drink, without
mercy and without hope !
"I talked to him kindly, reasoned
wan nun, succora mm tm lie was
well, and never lost sight of him
nor let him liave peace until he had
signed the pledge again.
It took him some time to recover
his place in the church, but I haEve
had the happiness-of seeing him re
stored. He is now, more than ever,
a devoted worker in the church';

A group of 1kvs stood on the
walk before a tine large drug store,
pelting each other with snow-balls.
In an unlucky moment the youngest
sent his, spinning tli rough the frosty
air, against the large plate-glass of
the druggist's whitlow. The crash
terrified them all, hut none so much
as the little fellow, who now stood
pale and trembling, with startled
eyes, gazing at the mischief he had
wrought.
"Won't old Kendrick le mad !
Run, Ned! we won't tell. Uun,
quick !"
"I can't," he gasped.
"l inn, I tell von ! he's coming !
Coward! Why don't you run? I
guess he wouldn't catch me !"
,lXo ; I can't run," lie faltered.
"He'll be caught! Not spunk
enough to run away ! Well, I have
done all I can lor him," muttered
the elder boy.
The door opened, and an angry
face appeared.
"Who did this?" comes in fierce
tones from the owner's lips. "Who
did this, I say ?" he shouted. No
one answered.
The trembling, shrinking boy
drew near, lhe little delicate-look
ing culprit faced the angry man, and
in tones of truth replied;
"I did it, sir."
"And yon dare tell me of it ?'
"I dare not denv it, sir; I dare
not tell a lie."
The reply was unexiected. The
stern man paused ; he saw the pale
cheek, the frightened eyes ; within
the soul of truth and true courage
shone, and his heart was touched.
"Come here, sir. hat is your
name i
"Eddie Howe, sir. Oh! what
can I do to pay you. I'll do any
thing ! his eyes tilled with tears

lie answered, 'Yes, it's me. Look
at me again. Don't you know me ?'
4 Yes, 1 know you,' I said, 'and
am grieved to see you in this drunk
en condition. I thought you were
a teetotaler V With a peculiar grin
upon his countenance, he answered'
"I Xros before I took your medicine.'
x am sorry to see you disgracing
yourself by such conduct. ; I am
ashamed of" you, Housing himself
a drunken people will at times, to
.extraordinary effort, he ehaffingly
replied. 'Didn't you send me here
for my medicine?' and with a delir
ious kind of a chuckle he hie-cupped
xut words 1 can never lorget-
jJoctor : your medicine cured, my
body, but it has damned my soul!'
"Two or three of his companions
hearing our conversation, took him
uuder their protection, and I left
him. As Ldrove away my heart
was full of bitter reflections that
liad been the cause of ruining the
man's prospects, not only for this
world, but tor that which is to come.
" i ou may rest assured I did not
aleep much that night. The drunk
en aspect of that man haunted me.
f.nd I found myself weeping over
the injury I had done him. 1 rose
up early next morning and went to
Ins cottage with his little garden hi
front, on the outskirts of'' the town
where I had often seen him with his
wife and happy children playing
about, but found, to my Borrow,
that lie had removed some time ago.
At last, with some difficulty, ! found
