i Conceding that General Grant
has made a better President than he
expected, Mr. Greeley still opposes
Lis nomination for 1 872. It will
be couoling to the friends of the
General to know that the support of
Mr. Greeley is not always neces
sary to success. In 1840 he op
posed the 'nomination of General
Harrison; but he was nominated
and elected, notwithstanding. In
1844 he' supported Mr. Clay for the
Presidency, but (.lay was defeated.
In 184S Mr. Greeley vehemently
opposed the nomination of General
Taylor; but Taylur became Presi
dent. In 1852 he bitterly fought
against the nomination of General
Scott ; but Scott was nominateh
In 1856 he was enthusiastic hi his

Chicago to nominate Mr. Bates:

1868 ; but the convention thought
best to bestow that honor on Gen

and as onr last Legislature adopted
the system of rascality and swin

resulted in its overthrew, we may
safely conclude that in our Con
gressional election of Juno 1872,
the people of Oregon will show their
appreciation of such a party in a
brilliant Republican victory. Tlie
inlluer.ee of these upon the Presi

sumrsed. The Fast will answer to
the "West, the North to the South ;

Some of our Democratic cotcmp
oraries are put to great straits for
something out of which to mami-

prosperity, wealth and power. The
smiles of Providence are resting
un.n us as a nation, a:.d gratitude
should swell in every bosom.
The Do'mocracy are continually
clamoring for a reduction of taxa
tion and an economical administra
tion of the Government. They
charge tl e Republican party with
extravagance, with corruption-frand,
everything that is dishonest, soliish
and oppressive. But what is their
record in the United States Senate
on the subject of taxation ? It was
proposed to reduce tlie taxation
some eighty-live million dollars ;
and while the Republican Sci.afc.rs
voted aye, the Pemecratie Senators
voted nay. Not a single man of

Since the discovery of the theft

has addressed a communication
to the Controller requesting

tion has broken out in this band of
Tammany thieves. It is said that
Hall and Sweeny are trying to
crush Tweed and Connolly. The

nation of" the friends of the latter.
They say if any resignation is made
it must include all who are in any

If our Democratic friends can see
anything comforting' hi the "signs
of the times," they are certam'y
the most easily tatistied and cheer
ful ieople in the world. First, the
Democratic Territory of Montana
elects a Republican Delegate
something that never before oc
curred in her history. Next, we
have a large Republican gain in
Kentucky, heretofore the very Gib
raltar of Democracy. Then rap
idly following these examples comes
North Carolina, vrith an unexpect
edly, even to the most sanguine
Republicans, large majority for the
Republican ticket ; showing that a
largo numlier of whites must have
cut loose from Democracy and joined
the party of progress. But right
here on the Pacific coast, ' where
Democracy calculated on certain
and overwhelming success, having
her strongest and ablest men in the
field, have the people "gone back"
on the '-time-honored principles,"
and let Democracy "out." The
defeat was suddeiw terrible, and
overwhelming, ail Democracy is
thoroughly demoralized. Verily,
Democracy is a the down-grade,
brakes off, without conductor or
brakesman, and the "signs of the
times" seem to indicate a terrible
smash-up not far in the future a
smash-up that will leave not a ves
tige of Democracy to swear by.

A distinguished physician says,

Sorry we did not know that

would come up. Sea-sickness is a

faster than it went down, hardly
giving us time to find a place to put
it. The elevating pr.icass, however,
did not slop there ; but kept, on in
its "wurks" until we almost looked
to be turned inside out and entirely
spilt. Traveler on tlie raging brine,
