An -Estate Mathematically Dlridea."
From the New Orleans Picayune.
In . our Friday morning's edition we
published the following, for which the
ISew York H tt is responsible : ,
A. resident of Hartford," ,wbo died,
leaving his lady in a condition which is
hoped her love for him rendered conso
nant with her wishes, also left a will that,
if the anticipated infant turned out to ba
boy, two-thirds ol the estate should
be his, and the remaining third should
go to the widow; if on the other hand, a
girl ahould be born, tho widow was to
nave two-thirds ot the property aud .the
child one-third. But, with a woman's
aptituded for unnecessarily complicating
questions, the lady saw fit' to bring forth
twins, oi whom one is male, and the
other female. And now all the lawyers
in the laud are at loggerheads to decide
whether the boyv8Uall, ave, t,wothirds
aud the girl one-third of the estate, leav
ing nothing for the mother, or whether
the mother can claim one-third for bar
ing borne the boy and the other two
thirds for having the eiil. Dr. Butler
is reDortcd to have susrsested that' the
fiiuiplest way out of the difficulty would
be to divide the property into six parts
or say seven, and s;ive him one.
Yesterday we called, upon V. II. Sut
ton, of the firm of Sutton, Powell & Huey
of this city, who handed us the subjoined
solution of the puzzle, which we publish
fur the edification of the disagreeing
New York doctors of law :
Daughter, one-third.
Mother twice us much as daughter, two-thirds
Son twice as much as mother.
Suppose the Hartford man's estate to ba $10,-
000:
Daughter ...1
Mother twice that 2
on twice mother's share -4
7 $10,000
Daughter's share
Mother's share
Son's share
Estate mathematically
will be sustained.

A Man has his Neck Broken and Still

From the New York Herald, August 8th.
The case of Frederick Prout, who sus

his looting and Jell thruugh. lie was

A German Magician. From
Philadelphia Ledyerme get this :
- Tbe German journals give a curious
account of the tiialof Johann Kramer,
professor of magic, before the magistrates
at G lessen. Ibis crafty individual
started in life as a tailor's apprentice, but
at an early age the faculties ot manipula
ting cards aud curing sundry diseases de
veloped so rapidly that he relinquished
his honest trade and devoted himself to
"doing good." At various times thedis--satisfac
tion of some of the persons who
consulted hi in brought him into collision
with the authorities, and he was repeat
edly imprisoned. This punishment, how
ever, did not deter him from his evil
courses, and as soon as released he con
tinued to prophesy future events, chiefly
to ignorant eei vant girls, and drawing
his prognostications from the shape of
their heads, fingers and nails. - He also
kept spiders, which . were eatployed in
weaving the winning numbers iu lotter
ies and in making "luck tickets," which
bad to be worn on the right side for
twenty-seven days. During the Franco
German war he engaged to witch soldiers
out of France back to their sweethearts
in Germany, and also looked in his
"earth mirror" fur missing persons, and
generally discovered them ''sitting im
piisoued on a solitary island for ten years."
To bring these missing individuals safely
back he required a payment - of seven
florins for the "magical brotherhood," and
further obliged the inquirer to undergo
the process of being electrified on cross
roads.", . : - - ..'-',. ;t

A Veritable Fire-eater. They
have iu Caroline county, Maryland a ven
itable fire eater named Coker, a colored
man. The Eaton Journal says of htm:
'-Coker the negro fire-cater from Caroline
county, was in aston and was indused
to give an - exhibition of his fire-proof
qualities, of which to much had been
said.. He lapped his tongue several times
on a red hot shovel, rubbed the same hot
shovel oa the bottom of his foot, and pour
ed melted lead into his mouth, where he
let it remain until it hardened. There
was no legerdemain about it it was
done in the presence of a number of gen
tlemsn immediately, around him, and by
whom he was closely watched to prevent
imposition.. A physician examined ..his
mouth but could find no evidence of
burns, or that tbe heat had any ' affect
upon him. It is certainly wonderful,
and an examination of his skin ' worthy

A German paper. . Vol&staut, obser
ves that there is an unwillingness ia in
fluential circles to allow the full extent .
of the losses in the late war to transpire.
A semiofficial corroboration now sudden
ly appears of the worst rumors ' which
were circulated in process of 1 time. The
Central Bureau: of Information in Berlin,
under the inspection of the highest r-- '
tary authorities, has publish"' "'ZlL
of its work, with interestir rftol ,

twelve months, authenticated : tC3,C0Q
sick and woundrd eases, and thatef these
only 78,000 belonged to the Frenpii, tha
remainiog 550,000 to the German army.
The circumstances that only 43,060 of
these were South Germans, ' and that
nearly 508,000 were North - Germans,
shows by the disproportion of the nnm
bers the Bureau had been occupied with,
the North German Army. The. frfSti
ful figures, which bosides make no elairq

far below the truth. . '
