Blair, of , M"tssoarf( asserted previous to the last Presidential election that if U. S. Grant was elected President of the United States he would never bo succeeded by another ; that in case an other election was held, aad he wan des feated, he would declare himself Dictator, and, with the help of tbe Array and Navy, would continue himself in power ; that the principles of free government would be blotted out, and the one-man power be inaugurated in their stead. Con trary to the wish and hope of Mr. Blair, TJ. S. Grant was; elected Chief Executive of the natio3rand although hi has been filling the position for mor than two years, with credit to himself and honor to is country, the people have yet failed to see the slightest evidence leaning towards the usurpation of powers not fully and clearly warranted by the . Constitution. Yet there are members of the Democratic ty, taking their cue from Blair, who still echo the assertion that U. S- Grant does not intend to have a successor: but intends running the Government here- ftor on his own hook. These alarmists are either fishing for' gudgeons, or else they ,honestly believe ' theii1 own ' asser tion.v If the latter proposition be cor rect, and they are truly persuaded of the intent and purpose of U.S. Grant to usurp the reius of Government immedi ately upon tbe expiration of his term of office, we certaiuly do not know of a set of men who have more cause for real alarm than these self same individuals. They, have certainly maligned and abused the coming Dictator" in every conceivable - way, besides , exposing , nts - (as be sup posed) secret designs, upon the "liberties of the people." This being the case, thc-y cannot expect that when he "grasps tho reins of government with ao iron hand" he will fail to pay his earliest res pects to' those who were constantly plac ing obstacles in bis path way. If he prove to be the man they would have us believe, then his first efforts will be directed to quieting bis detractors aiid it is ; pretty generally conceded that thn "coming Dictator understands tbe business ot tanning thoroughly. We hope these fear ful gentlemen will not get on brg scare-, and ran clean out of the country, ai in that case they would lose the chance of becoming martyrized for their past con duct. . " '"' "' i- However much faith these "alarmists may have in their own predictions with regard to President Grant, tbey still seem to thiok there may be a chance that their prophecies will fail to connect, else why are they so, terribly. worried over the choice of a candidate to succeed the pres ent Executive? the niau who never in tends to give up his 6eat while there re mains breath in bis body i ll ur&ot intends to reign for life, why the neces sity of alt this fuss and bother about successor ? Let them content themselves with the fact that they will hereafter oc cupy back seats in the synagogue, or else fly their country for their country's good.
