It seems an old gentleman re siding near Kingston, who hadsfor seve ral years- been married, conceived a Vio- r m fl If' ? lent attaenmene ror a young gin living in the peigbbor hood. Whether this at tachment was reciprocated, or wbetbot be even made it known to the damsel her self we are - not advised. - It happened. however, that a young man bad also been paying his addresses to the girl, and rumor had it that he was soon to be married to her. ; v This coming to the ears of tbe old man, he determined to make a bold stroke to secure the object of his affections. His young rival was poor, while ho was bless- Cu Wlin an auunuaucu 01 hub wuriu a goods. He fret the youth, and. deliber ately proposed that-he would give hint his own wtte and S&OU in caan n ne would relioquisb bis claims to the ' girl and induce her to marry him. Strange to say, the young tellow ac cented tbe proposal : , stranger still, he submitted it to tbe girl and 6he consented to the arrangen-ent ; and, what is per haps not so strange, the wife of tbe first party also signified her willingness to cheerfully become a party in tbe transac tion. Everything thus amicably arjustea a day was fixed upon to consummate the trade, and all parties seemed in a fair way of having their wishes gratified. Just at this juncture, however, an in superable object presented itself in the person of tbe tatber of tbe girt, who got wind of the affair, and entered his pro test against the swap in the most decided and emphatic tetms. Tbe disconsolate husband was compelled to return to his own wife;' and the young man, finding he could not get hold of the 95(10, sub mitted to the stern decrees of fate with the best grace possible, and married the girl himself. t m, I I.. -II 1 W I I "I 'II" Preserve It. .. March 11, 1871 27tf Small' Fabms.- Small farms make near neighbors ; they make good roads : they make plenty of eood schools and churches: there is more money made in proportion to the labor ; less labor want ed ; everything is kept neat; less wages have to be paid for help : leas time is wasted ; more is raised to tbe acre, be- eauso tt in titled, better; there is no watching of hired men ; the mind ic not kept in a worry, stew, a . fret all the time. There is not so much fear of drouth, of wet weather, or a frost, of email prices. There is not so much money to be paid out for agricultural implements.
