George 1 Washington Stroud, late Mayor of Scio, but at present the clever and genial Mail Agent on the O. & C. Railroad, a few days since acted as spokesman in a pre sentation affair, to the great delight of all who were present on the occasion. The present consisted of a gold pin bear ing a conductor's badge, which waa pre sented to Sam Winaos, one of the social and obliging conductors on the O. Jfe C. Railroad. According to the local of the Oregonian, G-.'W. Stroud, late Mayor, etc., made the following eloquent and pathetic rcmaiks: "Sam: Sir I am delegated by a large number of very respectable gentlemen (including myself) who, though not related to you by blood or mar riage, have yat had relations with yuu in a busi ness or social way, along this line of railroad, to present to you this trifle of jewelry (here, George turn bled iu bis riht-hand vest pocket, and brought forth an elegant gold pin, bearing a conductor's badge) asa token of their high esteem for you as a gentlemauly gentleman, and your unquestionable talent as a railroad conductor. We hope you will accept this little, token with the same christian re signation and fortitude that either of us would exhibit if we were in your shoes. Applause from the boys. Now, Sam, put it on and wear it-wear it proudly, but don't lut it fool you into being too proud to know your old friends, Sam. Remember tnat. Your parents, by which I mean your father and mother, though honest, were respectable, and that's what's the matter with tho rest of us. ( Up roarious applause from a one-eyed man who thought he saw the point.) The American Eagle" Here the applauso became general and deafen ing, added to which, both the locomotive whistles were set going, it was forever lost to human ears, though it may be recorded above. George declares his suspicion that there was some design in that chorus of whistles. Of course, Sam replied. He said, "Well George, you and the other respectable gentlemen have my thanks, aud and and pshaw I I dont't know auything about this speeeh-makiug. business, but I'll stand the peanstts. (Applauso aud more whistling, during which the apprecia tive spectators dispersed aud the trains pursued their respective jouroevs.) George insists that be would have made a spceuh that would have done him credit if be had had a fair chance. The only proper comment on the above sago su?zesliuns, is found in an extraet we have had by us for cvcrl months, purporting to come i from a Massachusetts paper : "An article lately appeared in a New York pa per, beaded 'Four footed printers,' stating the wonderful improvements introduced into the Tract Society printing-office, by .Mr. Fcnsbaw, who actually employs two jack-assis as pressmen. The improvements in Sew York are at lcasta century behind Xew Hampshire; for astro credibly in formed tbat in tho ( flieo of tho New Hampshire Spectator, at Newport, even the editors of that paper are actually animals of that species." The recond is an article taken from the Providence American, and endorsed by the Statesman and Rrqister as "a sensi ble article on dress "Something wo would havo said of the alarm ing progress the ladies are making this season in tho circumference of their hats, a iashion that threatens to push every gentleman into the gutter who shall attempt to walk by the side of a lady, or pass her on the side-walks, to say Nothing of the danger she herself is in, of pejrforining an feronautic excursion, whenever she undertakes to cross the bridge in a high wind. But this we must defer. Thero is, we believe, a law against hav ing shop door awnings less than six feet high. And by a perfectly fair construction it might be made to apply to the movable awnings, now worn by the ladies, and denominated bats or bonnets. These considerations, and tbe high price of ground rent on Cheap side and Market-square, where tbe greatest obstruction must arise in the progress of foot passaugers, it has been hinted, may induce tbe fathers of tbe town to interfere, and exclude these unmeasnrable hats from the Side walks."
