his invitation to go with him to the
opera, thus leaving the husband and wife
to an hour or two of quite enjoyment and
explanation.. I
It was talked over in Lady ls box
that night, and I learned that she had
been the originator of the whole scheme,
and tbat to ber womanly tact its success
was mainly owing. During a tour that
she had made the previous year through
Spain, site bad looked up ber old friend
Mr. Fane, and spent several dajs with
him at his villa near Cadis. There she
had seen Angela, and had heard the
whole story of ber marriage and of her
husband's persistent determination not
to see her or recognize her as his wife.
Convinced from the wonderful - beauty
and attractiveness of the girl that Harry
Fane could hare no correct knowledge
or reccollection'of her, she conceived and
insisted upon carrying out the plot which
in its denouement had been productive
of such happy results. To completely
disarm suspicion, should any arise in
Harry's mind, the Italian name and
origib of the Signorina had been substi
tuted for the Spanish ; but his recollec
tion of hi wife was so imperfect, and
his prejudice against her so violent and
deep-rooted, that to associate hor for a
moment with the bright dream of loveli
ness who had wcund herself so tightly
round bis l eart had never for a moment
occured to him. V
"I can scarcely believe that I am
breathing in the nineteenth century," I
said, wben 'Xady'L. and Mr. Fane "had
finished their tale : "the story is altogeth
er too romantic for the age wo live in.
Fifty years bence 1 shall be telling it to
my grandchildren in my far-oS Western
home, and they will never believe that I
knew all the actors personally and saw
the whole drama performed under my
very eyes. .
