Tbere was a liglit step and tbe$ rustle
of silk behind us, and with a mighty
effort Harry Fane turned and bowed. ,
- At the same moment I turned my eyes,
and, resplendent ia full evening dress,
with jewels in her hair and on her lovely
bosom, I beheld the SiguoriDa Angela!
Dinner was announced almost imme
diately, and in a state of bewilderment
that bordered closely upon . insanity,
Harry and I followed MrL Fane and his
niece into tho "dining-room. ' The pres-eoee-of
the servauts prTejteu all cone
tersatio'n of i confidcirfat 'chsfactef" dtrr
ing dinner, but I heard enough to. con
vince me that by some mtracuions . eon
vulsion of nature, W special interposition
of Providence, Hurry Fane . had found
his '"Goreon of a wife" in the woman be
so passionately adored.
Xfefore tbo desert Mr. fane a carriage
was announced, and I gladly accepted
his invitation to go with him to the
opera, thus leaving the husband and wife
to an hour or two of quite enjoyment and
explanation.. I
It was talked over in Lady ls box
that night, and I learned that she had
been the originator of the whole scheme,
and tbat to ber womanly tact its success
was mainly owing. During a tour that
she had made the previous year through
Spain, site bad looked up ber old friend
Mr. Fane, and spent several dajs with
him at his villa near Cadis. There she
had seen Angela, and had heard the
whole story of ber marriage and of her
husband's persistent determination not
to see her or recognize her as his wife.
Convinced from the wonderful - beauty
and attractiveness of the girl that Harry
Fane could hare no correct knowledge
or reccollection'of her, she conceived and
insisted upon carrying out the plot which
in its denouement had been productive
of such happy results. To completely
disarm suspicion, should any arise in
Harry's mind, the Italian name and
origib of the Signorina had been substi
tuted for the Spanish ; but his recollec
tion of hi wife was so imperfect, and
his prejudice against her so violent and
deep-rooted, that to associate hor for a
moment with the bright dream of loveli
ness who had wcund herself so tightly
round bis l eart had never for a moment
occured to him. V
"I can scarcely believe that I am
breathing in the nineteenth century," I
said, wben 'Xady'L. and Mr. Fane "had
finished their tale : "the story is altogeth
er too romantic for the age wo live in.
Fifty years bence 1 shall be telling it to
my grandchildren in my far-oS Western
home, and they will never believe that I
knew all the actors personally and saw
the whole drama performed under my
very eyes. .

ten from Hot Springs, Arkansas :
After throwing myself outside-of the
usual amount of wild turkey, venison and
sweet potatoes to make up a first-class
Arkansas dinner, 1 set out for a walk id
the country. While sitting upon the

road but the very person that I was look-
ins for since I had been in tho State of
Arkansas, vix : the celebrated "Arkan-
saw 1 reveler. " As He came, perched
upon his cart, I had ample time to take a
cood look at bis turnout, which consisted
of one ox, harnessed with every conceiv
able Sv rt of ropes and straps ia shafts to
a cart, the body of which was about as
large as a common dry coods box.
stopped him, and he told , me that his
load consisted of pork and tatera. X re
marked to him that I supposed his wag

raised the cloth from the banket and rc
marked that "There was three as 'fine

him it he could play on the violin." I told
him I-did. He eyed me a moment, and
in that moment I thought that I plainly
saw bowie-knives for two. But instead,
seeing that 1 waa his friend, he merely
remarked, "that he nested I was
stranger in this country, for if he could
only play the fiddle, be could be elected
to any office he wanted. And as soon as
he said this he was invited to take ,

the pistol so close at hand naturally con.
eluded burglars were about the building,
and the pistol had gone offaccidently as one
of them was making hie entrance. He
arose seised an ax. and cuietlr began , to
examine about the p reraises ia the dark.
Pretty aooo he found himself near some
