In the fu ture destiny of Albany we shall see great need of such Libraries, to counteract tho influence of immorality which is spread ing itself in our midst with alarming ra pidity. We see to day places prospering among us, calculated to engender vice and lead the young into ways which can only result te their great detriment, and these places are surLnneJ by an unsus pecting public. Can we not then sustain an association that will place within the reach ot all, a storehouse of knowledge, calculated to build us up and prepare the way for a life of usefulness ? . It needs only a mite from the many good citizens of Albany to make it a success and an honor to our city. As we all desire to see our city rank among-the foremost in intellectual privileges, let us all aid in placing it there. The Library fee is $5, one-half down and the remainder at tho expiration of one year. Ladies admitted at one half of the above rates. The next regular meeting will be held at tho M. E. Church, Feb. Some of the ''old boys" struck a "specimen" the other day, and concluded to "work him up." Making him believe (?o the story goes) that a prize fight bad been arranged for him, they proceeded to weigh him, and fouud that he was several pounds heavier than his antagonist, and therefore must be reduced. To this eud they weighted him down with bricks and started him through the streets on the iun, that he niitrht rid himself of the superfluous flesh. After getting him warmed p by exercise, they would take him to his quarters, rub him down, blanket him, and stuff him with raw meat, to ' get up his muscle." As the hour for the fight approached, the "fightenger" was put under the care of a barber, who eut the hair fftjm his head as close as possible, and then, to harden and . toughen the scalp, his head was soaked in coal oil. About this "time his "backers"' and "friends'' ascertained that the Marshal had got wind of the affair, and was in search of the parties to the fight to arrest them. Of course this produced a ter rible scare (J.) all round, ana life poor mortal who had undergone so much "traioiug," was given a dollar, and a bil let of wood to carry to keep his muscle in ordcr and started on foot for Corvallis, where he was informed the fight could come off without danger.
