Another Enemy to Labor.
A Chico pspar makes mention of , the
fact that the Locher Steam Piowi en
gaged on the Uenahaw ranch, Qamiltoa
township, and that it tarns up thirty
acres of soil, ten inches deep, per day.
Right here, in this steam plow, w be
hold an enemy to labor that should re
ceive the immediate attention of the en
emies of the cheap labor system 1 The
terrible system of land monopoly which
prevails to so great an extent on the Pa
cific coast, and the rapid rash, of colossal
fortunes into the hands of a few fortunate
accumulators, will soon, with the aid of
such instruments ' as the steam plow,
mowers, threshers, etc-, enable a few men
to sow, reap, mow, and market bread
stuffs, independent, comparatively, of hu
man labor. Is it not patent to the least
informed howler against "monopolies"
and "cheap labor," that, as society is now
constituted, these great mechanical work
er?, including not only those mentioned
above, but planers, spinners and weavers,
and the many other labor-saving ma
chines, really jeopardize tbe rights of la
bor more than a dozen Chinese Empires,
with all the navies of the world to trans
port them N hither! This anti-Chinese
movement is assur redly one of the deep
political dodges that had its origin in the
brain of some Teady schemer, for the
purpose of attracting the attention of tlie
laboring producers, that some thieving
enterprise may triumph without exciting
attention or awakening their alarm 1 Let
the enemies of the cheap labor system
souud the alarm, ere it be too late. Let'
them "go for" these inventors of ma
chines calculated to do away with so
much human labor, and thus take the
bread from the poor man's month, and
expose their nefarious designs I Let's
have one howl from them, just to Bhow
they are in earnest in" their oft-repeated
condemnation of ' 'monopolies," and ex
pressions of sympathy for the working-
men !j ' "
i .. i . . .
Tni Custom of Mourxikq. In Italy
the mourning; eras loraierly aliit. for
women and brown for men. In China it
is white; in Turkey, Syria and Armania,
it is blue; in Egypt, yellow; Ethiopia,
gray. Each of these colors had originally
its mystical signification. White is the
emblem of purity ; celestial blue indicates
the space where the soul ranges after
death j yellow, or the, tinge the dead
leaves, exhibits the end cf all human
'hopes, and man falling like a leaf of
autumn; gray presents the color of the
earth,' our common mother; and black-,
the funeral costume now adopted through
out Europe and America, as an - allusion
to eternal night. In x-ngland, the sov
ereign never-wears black ; he is clothed
in dark purple as mourning. Till the
reign of Uhailes V 111., white was the
funeral garb in France. The Emperor
Leopold, who died in 1 Do, used to suffer
his beard to grow in disorder during the
hole period of mourning. In this he
imitated the Jews. The dowager em
presses never left off weeds," and their
apartments were hong with black until
their death. The Chancellor of France
is the only person who never wears
mourning. Tbe brothers, nephews and
cousins cl 1 o pes never ; wear it. The
happiness of having a Pope in the family
is too Teat to allow them to be afiected
even by his death.
I .' - ,
A Touching Custom.- In all Jim
there prevails a touching custom which
evinces a profound respect and tender
love lor the memory of tbe dead. The
cemeteries are thiekly studded with
graves, and not one but has a stone mon
ument (large or small, as was the rank of
tbe sleeper when alive), . cap for rice
offerings, and a holder for evergreens or
flowers. We wander frequently through
the bed rooms of these sleeping pagans,
and note that at every grave there is al
ways found fresh flowers ' or sprigs of
green trees. No matter bow old the
head-stone ; covered with green moss, and
the inscriptions almost worn from f the
granite by ram, wind er neat, though it
be, there is always the beautiful blossoms,
the few grains of rice and the cup of wa
ter. .No resting place is forgotten ; no
sleeper that has not his decendants or
kin. It is indeed a touching national
custom, and reveals a tenderness of soul
that would do honor to the most civilized
race on earth. In Ameriea we have onoe
a year a ''Decoration Day" for spreading
floral offerings on our dead soldeirs graves ;
and Mrs. Petroleum, Madam Gunnybagi
and the very Reverend Mr. Goldfcars,
with i all possible ostentation, scatter
broadcast baskets of flowers and buckets
of tears (if anbody is looking, of course)
and then forget the memory of the moL
dering heroes for a twelve-month. ' Ev
en if a near and dear friend goes across '
the stream, after a few months the grave
is too often forgotten. The pagans of
