Piiospeuols Times, Sheriff Irvine
reports better success in the collection of
taxes than ever met with before. At
every point except this city the payments
have been one third to double the amount
received last year. The taxpayers of
Scio, Lebanon, Brownsville, Harrisburg,
Peoria were especially nromnt with the

taiuly enjoying a degree of prosperity
vouchsafed to but few communities out

attracted to her borders. And although
the present is not to be "sneezed" at, yet
the indications are all in favor of still
better times for our people in the near
future. ITurraU for the Webfoot Xation.

Issue of the San Francisco Pioneer be
stows the following merited compliment
upon one of Albany's oldest citizens :
We had a very pleasant call on Friday
last, from Mrs. A. J. Duniway.of Albany,
who visits our city as a delegate fro:n the
Oregon State -Woman Suffrage Society,
to the Annual Meeting of the California
Woman Suffrage Association. Mrs D.
comes to us highly recommended as a
woman of business experience and energy,
intellectual ability and cultnre, haviug
liberal and advanced ideas, and able to
make herself knjvn ami respected by her
own vis anhni. Mrs. Daoiway, by invi
tatior, Will address the -San Francisco
Woman PuEFrncre Society, ' in P.ishaway
Hall, on WeduesJiy evening, January
4th, 1871, when it is hoped there will
'be a large gathering. This delegate will
spend a few weeks in this city, aud will
address societies in the neinhborhoiid of
San Francisco, when solicited to do so.
FutM Scio. We learn from the ..Yijcs

in front of Uncle Dan's grocery a few
mornings since.
Two ferryboats are now in process of
construction, to ply on. the North San

Brownsville, Jan. 2nd, 1871.
Times have beeu unusually lively here
for some weeks back.
Messrs. Templeton and Wheeler gave
us an exhibition of "Dore's Panorama of
Milton's Paradise Lost" on last Tuesday
evening. It was their first start in the
"show business." They intend giving'
exhibitions all over this and adjoining
States during the year. We wish them
much success, as they have soared no
pains nor expense in preparing a num
ber one show, that will be instructive as
well as entertaining.
Quite a large number of the citizens
of this place and vicinity met at the
school-house in South Brownsville on
Wednesday evening, and had under ad
visement the construction of a road
some description from this place (taking
Eagle Woolen Mills as one terminus) to
the nearest poiut on the railroad west of
here." Quite a diversity of opinion ex
isted as to what kind of a road would be
the best suited to our wants. Some fa
vored a railroad, some a plauk road, but
most seemed to be favorable to a macad
amized wagon road. Committees were
appointed to investigate the feasibility of
the various schemes, to report at some
meeting to be held at a futuie time.
During last week the sidewalk mania
got among the citizens of North Browns
ville and resulted in the construction of
several hundred yards of good substan
tial walks, counectin'' the bridge on the
Calapooia with the Baptist church. This
is something we have been sadly, iu uced
of ail winter, as the very soft condition of
the eartii was very annoying lo pedes
trians, especially those of the female
pursuasion.
"Watch night" meeting was held at
the new M. E. Church oa Saturday
uight. A goodly number were present,
aud a goud degree of iutcrest manifested.
The dedication of the new M. E.
Church took place on yesterday. With
but little effort sufficient inouey was sub
scribed to pay all the contracts of the
building committee, aud make other
necessary -improvements, such as fencing
the lot, &.c. The building as it now
stauds -is a credit to the place, and a mon
ument to the indomitable energy and
persevcrence of Rev. J. II. Itoork. In
capacity it is calculated to seat comfort
ably oUO persotiS, being considerably the
largest room in town. The interior is
well paiutcd, and the seats stained and
varninhed. A protracted mectiug is be
ing held iu it, which will coutiuue du
riug the week, aud perhaps longer.
MARRIED.

DIED.
Near Albany, Jan. 6th, 1S71, of typhoid and
lung fever, James J. Miller, aged 25 years, 4
months, and 20 days. ,
His only sister passed away a month before he
was taken sick, and being very affectionate and
sympathetic, he was overwhelmed with grief and
sorrow. .
A sister's death had caused each grief
In vain his soul had sought relief.
Till from the earth it sped away
To dwell with her in endless day.

Since our last report the Albany
market prices have "fluctuated" some
what, in one instance at least to the del.
light of the seller. Those of our farm"
ers who have held on to their wheat with
the hope that they would receive one
dollar per bushel tor it before the close
of Winter, can now plume themselves on
their good jadgriient, and the necessary
amount of "sand" to take the "chances,"
as wheat has 'Tiz," and the anxiously
looked for "dollar pci bushel" is now free
ly offered by our millers and other buyers.
We are glad that our friends are in
'luck's way," as-one dollar pays well for
raising wheat in fact farmers of the
Willamette Valley want no better pay
ing crops than wheat at one dollar
Aside from the article of wheat, there
has been but little change in the markets.
We quote :
Flour Per barrel, $5 50.
Butter Fresh roll, 30c$ R.
Eggs Fresh, per dozen, 30e.
Onions Per bushel, SI 75(W?2.-
Potatoes Scarce, a good quality sell
