coal vein recently discovered on Beaver

to be a 'big taing" for the owners. A
company has been organized ' and the
work of developing the vein has ; been
inaugurated.'; Specimens of ; the coal,
taken from the vein a few feet from the
'surface shows it , to be superior to the
same article , brought here from Paget

ness. It will be but a short time ere an

a small steamer for the navigation of the
Sautiain succeed, coal from these mines
can ba laid down in this city in short

ed with the river, that it can be success-
fully and profitably navigated as far up
at least as Lebanon, and to piove the
sincerity of their belief they are willing
to aid iu a liberal manner any man or
company that will undertake the enter

Christmas Tuee. The Methodist
people of this city and their friends, as
announced last . week, enjoyed their
Christui is festival at the Court House ou
Saturday night. Three large trees were
erected, tastefully ornamented and brill
iantly illuminated, on the branches of
which were hua, iu rich profusion, some
Gve hundred presents varying in value
from a splendid gold watch and chain and
splendid sets of jewelry to a stick of
candy or a cigar. A short address was
delivered by Kev. Mr. Todd, the Metho
dist pastor, and the occasion was enliven
ed by excellent vocal and instrumental
music. The spacious court room was
crowded to its fullest capacity by as
merry and happy an audience as ever
went a Christmas treeing. Great credit
is due Mr. Harry Kuhn, who had charge
of the whole matter and brought it to
so successful and pleasant an issue4 ?
-On Satur-
Pajjokama. Dore's celebrated pano
rama of Milton's Paradise Lost, will be
exhibited at Parish Hall in this city on
Saturday evening (to-night), the canvass
moving at half past seven o'clock. This
celebrated painting, has received the
highest praise of the press, everywhere
throughout the United. States, and as a
satisfactory evidence of its great popu
larity those who have once seen it express
a desire to attend the exhibition again
say they cannot see it too often. As the
exhibition is for one evening only? of
course everybody will want to go, and a
full house will be the result. Those
desiring choice scats should go early.
: Removal. By reading the new ad
vertisement elsewhere it will be seen
that Messrs. A. Carothcrs & Co. haven
removed their largestock of drugs, chem
icals, paints, oib, essences, etc., ' to 1 the
Foster brick on First street, which ; they
have filled up iu the neatest and most
tasty manner. The energy, enterprise
and accommodation of this firm, although
in business but a few months in the city,
has secured them a large and paying
business. You are invited to call and
see them in their new quarter.
The Show. Barney & Taylor gave
an entertainment in " Parish 1 Hall on
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, to
tolerable audiences. ' Barney's execution
of a medley on one string of his "fiddle"
was very good indeed fiddling is decid
edly Barney's heavy suit. Taylor's de
lineation of Yankee character, description
of a miners life, etc , were quite enter
taining, in every case "briuging down"
the house. His local song, although not
extraordinarily brilliant, was equal to the
occasion, and seemed to meet the appro
bation of the audienee generally. We
guess everybody who attended got their
nioney'n worth, and that's mote thau we
can say of all the shows that come this
way.

C'iTllE Ball. The ball given , by the
' Albany Brass Band on the evening of
the 2Gth, was a pleasant aud agreeable
one, enjoyed hugely by all present. There
were som3 hundred persons present, we
should judge, all of whom appeared to
have come to the party- on purpose to
enjoy themselves and they did. The
supper, prepared at the St. Charles, was
all that could be wished, and puts another
feather iu the hat of the pleasant and

ing them so pleasant and enjoyable an

Irvine, collected taxes to the amount of
2,000 in Scto, against 1,400 last year ;
the next day, at Frankliu Butte precinct,
he collected 1,000, against 900 latt
year.
The Small pox scare is all over in Scio
all the patients having recovered.
The iVeit-i thinks lift ecu mills, tho
present taxation iu Liun county, rather
steep for a county that is out of debt,
and thinks it would prove a '"big thing"
for the party iu power if it would reduce
the figures.

arrived home ou Monday night, from a
visit to her old home in Iowa, we are
sorry (o say, in much poorer health than
when she left us. It Is hoped that with
proper nursing and nttentiou she will
be about again in a few days, tihe was
accompanied by her father," Mr. James
Shepherd, a gentleman, of upwards of
seventy years of age, who stood the trip
remarkably well, and seems hearty for a
man of his years. - .
Judge W. Lair Hill, of Portland, drop
ped m on us 'on Monday. We nevei saw
the Judge looking in better health. Al?o,
Mr. Andrew Hill, of Portland, and Dr.
Lindsay Hill, at present a resident of
Salem', lighted our sanctum by ' their

Mr. Thos. Monteith, of Beach & Mon
teith, arrived from San Francisco on
Tuesday, well and hearty. Glad to see

Our old. friend, Charley Monteith,
called on us Tuesday, just up from 'Frisco,
where he haa resided for tho past , thir
teen month's. He will remain in Albany.
Mr. Sam'I Althouse, of AUbouse &
Co., arrived home from tha East on

E. E. Wheeler, Scio's accommodating
Postmaster, called on us Tuesday. He
reports Scio. free from the small pox, and
everything is lovely. -
The Railroad. On Wednesday the
railroad track south of this city had been
laid to a point half a mile beyond Oak
ereck four miles from the depot, ;

Sidewalks and street crossings are
being rapidly constructed, as per order
of the Council, on the south side of
Sixth street, from Ellsworth to EHh
streets, a distance of eight blocks.
Judge Cranor has had constructed a
neat picket fence around his residence
on First and Lyon streets.
The Register folks bow their com
pliments to Mr. Brenner, of the St.
Charles, for a nice New Years cake.
Mr. Du Boise kindly remembered the
Register during the week. May he

that, in all probability, it will not recover

gravel train between this city and Jef

Quite a number of gentlemen from the
neighboring towns were in the city on
Tuesday, 'to attend the Masonic installa
tion, which caino off in the evening.

The passenger depot will soon be iu
readiness for occupation. It is a neat
structure.
Trains commenced regular business ou
the Oregou & California Railroad, be
tween this city and Fast Portland, on '
Sunday last. Trains loave this city daily
at 6.40 A. M., and 1.30 P. M., except
on Sunday. Ou that day there will be
but one train, which will leave at 1.30
P. M.
