A Nice Little ; Party, A party of
gamblers eat down to a game of euchre
on election day on the umbrageous bank
of a Kansas Creek. The sport went on
peacefully for a while, until one of the
gentlemen was discovered making use of
that ignorance of the game which proved
so exasperating. to Win. Nje and James
Truthful in n famous passage of the
Table Mountain. The ordeal of a battle
was decided upon for a settlement of the
points at issue. Two combatants fought
a duel on horseback, in which they dis
sected each other like Eealous young
surgeons, and their horses catching tbe
chivalrous infection bit and tore each
other's necks and cheeks into'shreds.
Yi hen the fight and one of the gamblers
were finished, the survivor was promptly
shot by n spectator, who had probably bet
on a different result, and the fighting be
came general. . The whole party were
soon stretched out on the autumnal herb
age, when, unfortunately, a physician
(Dr. Lawrence, who tells the story) ;
passed that way and rendered professional
assistance, and it is feared that some of
them may recover. ;
Enticing Delicaci es. The "Besieg
ed Resident," who sends such interest
ing letters from . Paris to the London
Daily Xtvo, says in a recent communi
cation : "I dine habitually at a bouildon;
there horse-flesh is often in the place of
beef, and cat for rabbit. Both, however,
are excellent, and the former is a little
sweeter than beef, but in other respects
much like it; , the Utter something
between rabbit and squirrel, with a
flavor of its own. It is delicious. I
recommend those who : have ' cats ' with
philoprogenitive proclivities, instead of
drowning the kittens, to eat them.. Either
smothered in onions or in a ragout, they
are capital eating. ' When I return : to
London I shall frequently treat myself
to one of those domestic animals, and
ever feel grateful to Bismarck for having
tausht me that cat served up for dinner
is the right animal in the right place
Old Newspapers. Many people
take newspapers, but few persons pre
serve them. The most interesting read
ing imaginable is a file of old newspapers.
It brings up the very age, with all its
genius and its spirit, more than the last
labored description ot the historian. Who
can take a paper dated a half a century
ago without the thought that almost
every name there printed is now eat
upon a tombstone at the head of an
epitaph ? The doctor, (quack or regular)
that advertised his medicines and their
cures, has followed the sable train of his
patients ; tho merchant in his ships ;
and the actor who could make others
laugh or weep, can now furnish a skull
for bis successor in Hamlet. It is easy
to preserve newspapers, and tbey will
repay the trouble, for like win;, their
value increases with

The Possibility of a Perpetual
Congress. The Washington correspon
dent of the New York Herald, Decem
ber 8th, says :
The House Judicary Committee at the
last session agreed to report the bill to
repeal the Act of January 22, 18G7,
which provides that the Fortieth and
each succeeding Congress should meet
at noon on the 4th of March immediate''
ly after the adjournment of the preced
ing Congress. This determination of
the Committee will be reconsidered, very
probably, and it may be agreeed to , let
the Act of January, lob7, stand, so that
the next Congress will meet immediately
at the close of the present oue.

Gambling Extraordinary! Mar
shal Bazaine is magnificent in his losses.
The other day he surrendered at Mets,
with 6,000 officers and 173,000 soldiers,
a surrender certainly without a parallel
in modern history. His losses at cards
are on a similar scale. While in Mexico
he .contrived to lose, at a single kitting
at monte, $169,500. The wagers were
not less than 100 ounces, 81, C00 gold
and twice Basaine put $50,000 against
the bank's. Bazaine was winner at one
