LOCAL AFFAIRS
Arm Uhokkm On Tuesday last as
Mr. and Mrs. Cochran were crossing tbe
bridge over the Calipooia, between North
and South Brownsville, in a one-horse
bagjry, the amimal became frightened at
a hole in the bridge, and commenced
backing. 'Mr. Cochran jumped out of
the buggy to catch the animal by the
head, but beToro he had succeeded in his
undertaking the animal had backed until
the hind wheels of tbe vehicle were; off
the bridge, and Mrs. Cochran precipitated
to the ground below. The fall broke the
left arm of. the lady between the wiist
and the elbow, dislocated the wrist, and
otherwise bruised and jarred her. Dr.
Hill Was called in, and under his treat
nient the patient is getting along finely
Railroad Prooukss. The grading
between this city and the Santiam river
has been .completed, and the graders are
rapidly pushing the work and are alreaoy
some miles south of this city. Work on
the bridge has commenced, and should
all the material arrive iu time, th- bridge
will be completed ready for the iron rails
by the latter part of next week. The
bridge consists of two Fpaus, of 400 feet
each, and L 47 feet high. There id 3,
000 lect iu length of trcssel work, and it
is estimated that more than a half mil;
lieu feet of lumber aud a hundred tons
of iron will be used in its construction.
The total cost will be about S75.000.
Sot'lABt.K. The large.-"! gathering of
the season was ou.the occasion of the
Sociable,' on Thursday cvc:mi'r, held at
residence of John Barrow, Kq. The
stylish residence of Mr. B., which has
lately been greatly enlarged and newly
furnished, was crowded by the old and
young of our city, where a pleasant
evcuing was passed in social converse,
i and listening to well executed vocal and
,' instrumeutal music. Miss Ada Beach
aud Miss Iaura Tate presided, alternately,
at the piano, while Mr., tleo. Price
brought forth sweet strains from a flute.
Mr. and Mrs. - Barrows never fail in
giving pleasant parties.
Wkathku. The splendid weather we
are at present enjoying is relished by
railroal men, and its ontiuuauce a few
weeks longer will insure the completion
of the road to the. hundred mile stake
much earlier than anticipated. At the
same time the contiuuam-c of dry weath
er is a drawback to farming interests, j
and should it continue much longer, the
breadth ot tiie fall crop of wheat will be
greatly reduced.
TnotBLKsOME Indians For several
weeks past our city has been troubled
' with a set of drunken, thieving Indians
from different reservations, greatly to the
annoyance and cost of our peplc. If the
Indian Agents, whoso duty it is to look
after these vagabonds, will see to their
immediate removal, they will be confer
ring a great favor upon the citizens ol
Albany, aud at the same liuic be houeat
ly earniug their salaries.
Sold. Mr. Jerry l)riggs has sold his
ticat residence, comprising eight acres in
the western portion of this city, together
ith his farm, tome 8 miles from the
"city, to Mr. Knott, of Portland, for the
sum ot $19,000. Tbo farm , comprises
1,580 acres, and is a valuable property.
Mr. Driggs intends removing his family
to some point where they can enjoy better
health.
At Work. The Albany Lumbering
Company commenced running their steam
saw mill (lately Ilubart's last week, and
will continue manufacturing all kinds of
lumber called for in this market. Ap
plication for lumber should be made to
K. S. Merrill, Superintendent.
Kjcpibkd. The thirty days piven
property holders on streets ordered to be
graded by the Council ou the 26th ult.,
has about expired, but owing to the
scarcity of teams, the work has not been
completed. We suppose the Council will
give further time.
Mill Race Completed. The mill
race of 31 cssrs. Beach & Montcith was
completed aud the water turned in on
Wednesday. The machinery all works
(satisfactorily, aud the mill will soon be
running by water power.
