The meeting to take steps looking to the proper celebration of the Fourth of July, called for last Satur day night, didn't pan out to any great extent. We suppose our citizens are not "upon it," and those who wish to cele brate will be compelled to betake them selves to some other point to spend their money and time. Portland, we suppose, will throw open her doors on the occa sion, and probably Salem, and will be benefitted many hundred dollars thereby There waa some talk of the Sandridgcrs giving a barbecue on the1 4th. Who knows anything in relation to it? Show. Three fellows bent on making Caught. We learn that the five con victs who escaped from the State peni tentiary at Salem on Sunday last, were captured on the Santiam, a few miles from this city, on Wednesday night. When discovered they were enjoying their regular hash, which they had pur loined from a store in Jefferson.. The re ward of $1,000 offered for their capture was shared equally by the four captors. Religious. The Congregational As sociation continues its session today. Meeting this evening devoted to Home Missions and fifth eemi-cen'ennial ot Con gregationalism. The pulpit of the city churches will be supplied to-morrow (Sabbath) by members of this body. A Bushel of Charcoal. To settle disputes which frequently arise between charcoal burners and consumers, we are requested to state that a bushel of char coal contains two thousand five hundred cubic inches of coal. Moke Nice Goods. Always up to tho times and ready to meet the demands of a living easy, advertised to exibit a living her lady customers, Mrs. Duniway is talking head, to tho sight-seers of Albany, t again in receipt of a new lot of millinery on W edoesday night last, at fifty cents per capita. Some of the "boys," not having, probably, the half dollar required to "see" the front door, took chances on the rear entrance, and were gratified to find they could see the whole show with ; out costing a cent. This "closed out" the show, the proprietors declaring that we were blessed with a hard lot of boys in this village. ' The newspapers published at San Francisco, Sacramento and other places, outside of the Bulletin, jllta and Sac: a- mento Union, have formed a California Press Association, to receive eastern dispatches by the Atlantic and Pacific telegraph line, in opposition to the Press Association of the Western Union line. Wonders. A woman of 20, 8 feet 1 inch high, weighing 413 pounds ; a beau tiful Circissian girl ; a Frenchman who stands 8 feet in bight, weighing 4G0 pounds ; a little 32 year older thant can not see over a three foot table, weighing less than a quarter pack of flour, are the latent attractions in Portlaud. A steamer twenty-oue feet long, start ed from London for New York, on the 31st ult.- She expects to make the trip in fifty days. The crew consists of one man besides the captain. MARRIED. At Lebanon, June f-tb, 1370, at the rcsMunce of the bride's father, by f. II. Claughton, J. P., Mr. Andrew J. Pruitt to MUd Emma June Klutn, all of Linn county, Oregon. Official Vote of Una County 1870. , Names of the Republican candidates appear in Roman, the Democratic candidates in Italics. n o -i e o 2 r; m s s "I f i-3 t Si " f ? : 3 sl : 3 M o v. o Til E Last. Mr. John Millard present ed us with a box of strawberries on Thurs day, informing us that they were the last of the season. They were of the Green Prolific and other varicties, and one of them was as lanre as a black walnut. If Mr. Millard is as successful in the future as lie has been in the past, in his attempts to increase the size of the berry, at the same time retaining its flavor, he will soon bring to market berries as-large as good sized apples.- . Sewing Society. The time for hold ing the Methodist Sewing Society has been changed from morning to afternoon. On next Tuesday therefore the ladies are invited to meet at the residence of Mr. J, C. Mendeuhall in the afternoon, and the gentlemen are invited to take tea at six o'clock P. M. precisely. We can confi dently promise a splendid supper on the occasion, as Mrs. Mendenhall has no su perior in the art cullinaryi Jolarious. The long pent-up jolari ty of the Democracy of Linn explodes to night. They have succeeded in carrying the State for repudiation, and now they wish to crow over the dishonor. As it will be their last crow let them make it a rouser, if they can Ret up enough of the necessary enthusiasm. Rut we very ; much fear they'll make a fizzle of it. Fantastics. The Mount Shasta 1'an . tastics give a grand blow out at Yreka (Cal.) on the 4th. Have our boys got energy enough to get up a good deal of cheap fun for themselves and friends on the occasion hereabouts ? or are they "palsied by the hand of time !" e- : Splendid Butter.- Mrs. Menden hall, who lives jnst across the river, in Benton county, presented us with a spec imen of superior butter last week. If her style of butter making prevailed in Ore gon, our State would soon take rank with the best in the Union in this line. Accident. Report reached us 'on Thursday that on Wednesday Mr. Jos. Suttle, who fives in Lebanon or vicinity, while riding a wild horse, was thrown violently from the animal's back, break ing an arm and fracturing his skull by the falL The accident happened some .three miles from this city. Wheat la looking up Ut the foreign markets. Dealers are looking for a ma terial advance in the price of wheat before the harvest is aver. Rumors of a partial failure of the crop in the .Eastern States are afloat. There is a chance that wheal . may rule higher than at any time since '64. - . - For the Mountains.- Our Post master, Ed. Freeland, leaves us soon for Soda Springs, thence to the moun tains, : to recruit his health. . We wish Ed. and his family all the pleasures inci dent to a camp life in the ' mountains at this the most delightful season of the Personal. An old typo, Bob. Head of the Portland Jlerald office, has been enjoying Albany life daring the week. P. P. Henderson, who has been very low for months past, we are glad to see is able to be around again, although still weak. He thinks of taking a , trip to California to see what benefit the climate there will have upon his health. II is .disease is consumption. ; . Rain. The fall of rain on Tuesday night couldn't have been better timed and was worth many a dollar to our farm ers. So far the Tain has been timed to suit the wants of everybody about the first season we havn't heard the complain ot too much or too little rain. Balsam. Wistar's Balsam is adver tised in our paper this morning. ' It has a good reputation, and has been used by t kuadreda with beneficial effect. goods, specially adapted to the season. There's the place to go. Horses. Mr. Chas. Russell has been purchasing horses in this county duriug the week, quite a number having already been sent below for inspection. They are for the Cavalry arm of the U. S. ser vice. This puts more Ss in circulation. "Short Grass." We don't care any thing about money, but our creditors do, and unless those indebted to us "come to see us" we are unable to make the hearts of our creditors glad. If an elephant had Tolled over our "puss" it couldn't be flatter. ' 9 Real Estate Sale. Mr. John. C.
