Powell and Butler, Republican and Democratic candidates for District Attorney of the Ad Judicial District, will address tho citizens of Linn county as follows : Peoria, Monday, May 23d, at 1, P. M. llarrisburjr, Tuesday " 24 " Browusvillc. 'Wednesday 25 " Lebanon, Thursday " 26 Scio, Friday " 27 " Albany, Saturday "28 ' Prnuc Speaking os Satcedat. As previ ously announced, the Republican and Democratic candidates for Congress, Hons. J. O. Wilson and J. II. Slater, addressed the citizens of this city, at the Court House, cn last Saturday afternoon, Judge Wilson opening and closing too debate. The speech of Mr. Wilson was an able and elo quent exposition of the principles of the party which placed hint in nomination for the high and liouoiable position of Congressman. It was such speech as could only emanate from a profound and master miud, and made an impression on the tninds of his vast audience that could not be erad icated by the flimsy sophistries and simple denials of bis adversary. It is enough to say that the ef fort was fully up to the expectations of the friends "of tho Judge, and produced an effcei oa the oppo sition that will aid in it3 overthrow and utter route next month. When Mr. Slater arose to make his defense of the principles contained in the Democratic plat form, it was patent to every observer, from his trepidation, his downcast look, his nervousness, and at times his incoherent utterance, t at he felt the impossibility of even an attempt to combat the sound logic and unanswerable arguuieuts of Mr. Wilson. But he spluttered and sweat, dran water and spit, through the time allotted him, and then sat down, looking as though he had been sent for and would very much like to go. lid present ed tho appearance of a man who wa veiy much disgusted with ail earthly things. We do not ffisa to misrepresent tins "lion of Democracy," as he is termed, and we only statj what is true when no say tuat not only me rank and filo but prominent DemoetaLs here were, to say tho least, disappointed at the palpatio Weakness of their "lion." A man never labored more zealously to make a rxjiut than did poor slater; but facts and figures were agaiusc hiui, and nil his uttemps to overturuw and disprove the iron-clad arguments of Air. Wilsou proved utterly abortive aud witnout avail. Tne closing remarks of Judge Wilson, in which he tere to sureds the flimsy arguments and soph istries of Mr. t-iaier, and showed up his weak aud clunisy detense of repudiation, were greeted with deafen. ng uppiause. It was a perfect hail-storm of withering sarcasm, cutting wit, and unanswer able argument. lu Judge Wilsun the Republi cans have an advocate uf whom they are proud a gentleman possessing the highest qualifica tions to ht him as a Kepres.ntativu of Oregon on the floors of Congress. Three cheers for our next Representative, Hon. J. U. Wilson. A. C. Junes' Record. Tbe further we look into tho record of A. C. Jones, Democratic candidate for County Clerk, the richer it gets. In 1862, this good Democrat now, A. C. Jones, voted tho straight Republican ticket. Our authority for making this assertion is tho poll books of this county of that date. A. C. Jones, in hia speech ess during that canvass, denounced Dem ocrats as Copperheads and Traitors, and in a speech made by him at a barbecue given at Scio, he made use of the follow ing language towards Democrats the very men whom lie now says dare not scratch him. Her is his language : "WE HAVE HERE FOOD FOR UNION MEN, AND FOR DOGS' BUT l NOTHING FOR COPPER HEADS!" It would seem from this that Democrats then, in the opiniou of A. C, were not deemed worth as much consideration as dogs ia fact were so low down iu tho scale as not to be deemed worthy of any thing at his hands except the vilest abuse. And now, eight years after, these men- these Democrats who were not deemed worthy to associate and feed with dojs, are asked to vote their calumniator into a four or five thousand dollar office. Wen calling themselves Democrats like, aye, are absolutely fond of being classed be neath even the canine race, and take ec static pleasure in voting for the man so cla?sitying them, don't they? This is but a leaf of the record of A. C- Jones, a bolter and disorganizer in 1859, and a villifier and political assassin of Democ racy in 18GJ. But more hereafter. A Family Medicine. We checrfuily call the attention of our readers to the advertisement of the favorite homo remedy, Perry Davis' Pain j cois at $3 Per year Killer. This medicine has been before the public more than thirty years, and to-day has a reputa tia unsurpassed by any other remedial agent of- lereu to in-; puciic. vt ime some are luud la its praise as a liniment, thc-y seem to know nothing i of its virtues joe awing pain when taken internally, ! and those wjo have used it with success inter- : nally seem ot aware of its healing properties j when applied externally. It has proven success- -ful Lata externally and internally, and is recog- iiic-d xn all parts of the world as the standard i family tpc'litiS. Probably no curative agen', ; has met with such wi .e-spread sale, or given such ) gcaeral satisfaction. It is a purely vcgetallj j compound, and is therefore perfectly safe even in uusktlicd hauds.
