er, who recently arrived in this city from
Iowa, purchased a 8ne farm, consisting
ot a half section or so, near Ilarrisburg,
in this county, to which he removed dur
ing the week. Every few days we hear

Lodge of I. O. O. F. Messrs. J. F.
ltackensto and D. M Thompson are the
xluly elected representatives of Albany
Lodge No. 4 to represent said Lodge in
the Grand Lodge of the -State, which
meets at Portland on Tuesday, May 17,
1870:
Receipts of the Fair. The receipts
of the Congregational Fair, held on tho
evening of April 29th, over and above
expenses, were one hundred and fifty
four dollars and a bit. This will go
far toward putting the. Church in order
throughout.
Cauuca Festival. The Church
Festival which transpired Friday evening
of last week, gotten up by the ladies for
the benefit of the Congregational Church,
was a grand success. The supper sur
passed anything of the kind ever gotten
up in the city, m quantity, quality and
general excellence of the viands. The
large number inattendanee seemed to en
joy tbcmselvc, and many expressed the
wish that festivals ruw'it often occur.
Mr. J. F. Backensto, of the firm of
Althouse & Co., one of the first mill
wrights in the State, will start in a few
days for Eugene City, to direct the fitting
up of the Eugene Mills for merchant
work.
Back. Agaij. The family of Mr. J.
B. Sprenger, of the Cosmopolitan Uotel,
Portland, have arrived at their old home
in this city, where they propose to spend
the summer. Tho friends of Mrs.
Sprenger will welcome her return with
pleasure.
Personal. We received a call from
J. W. Johnson, Esq., on Wednesday.
Dr. Hill, who has been very ill for
some weeks, we are happy to learn, is
decidedly better, llis early recovery is
looked for.
Co-Partnership. Messrs. Burmcster
& Belli nger have formed a co-partnership
in the law business in this city. It is a
bully team and we wish them success.
Ecjgs and Butter. We quote the
former at eighteen cents per dozen, and
the latter at fifteen cents per pound, in
this market.
Ribs Broke. Mr. Pierman, living a
short distance from this city, in Benton
county, one day last week was thrown
from a wagon., part of the load falling on
him and breaking two ribs.
Prize Fight. A prize fight is an
nounced to come off next week, between
two Albany bloods, for 25 a side.

old pioneer of Linn county, started East
ou the Motet Totlor, which left Portland
on the 5th instant, to attend the General
Assembly of the United Presbyterian
Church, which meeta at Pittsburg, (Pa.)
on the 20th inst., as a delegate from Or
gon. lie will be absent some months,
and will visit his old home in Tennessee
aal other Southern States. He will also
visit the spot in Alabama where he was
mobbed nauy years ago for his known
anti-slavery principles, llev. Mr. Ken
dall came to Oregon in 184G-7, therefore
has been a resident of our State more
than twenty-three years. He is one of the
ablest men in Oregon. If there is any
thing in intense individuality, he posses
ses it id a remarkable degree.
Political. Gen. Jasper Johnson
made a speech at the Court House ia
this city on Wednesday night, the prin
cipal portion of vjhich was devoted to an
appeal to our citizens not to extend the
suffrage' to Chinamen. He said that the
Republican and Democratic paitics were
a unit on this question that only the
radicals ot both parties were in favor of
it. lie denied that the National Democ
racy of tho Union were in favor of repu
diation ; declared that Wikon was a bet
ter Democrat to-day than Slater, because
he was in favor of paying the public debt
according to contract, and advised Dem
ocrats J vote for Wilson and against the
Herald, as a rebuke for uttering such
undemocratic doctrine as repudiation,
lie said that no honest Democrat could
vote for men who stood on a repudiation
platform.
