' ' ! ; Aw C. Jones, Recorder. Friday April 15th, The Mayor and two Couucilmcn only being present, and no quorum, adjourned to meet Thursday. Jones the Disorganizes. Forks or Saxtias, Apr. 14, 1870. EoiTon Registeh: By request of many Dem ocrats I beg leavo to make known, through your columns, the reason why we, as life-long Demo crats, in this section, refuse to support Mr. Jones, tho nominee on tho Democratic ticket (but not the Democratic nominee) for the office of County Clerk. About six weeks or a month prior to the Convention Mr. J. partially, and I may say wholly, came out before the people as a candi date for the clerkship, and after his name had been canvassed among the Democracy for a time he saw his unpopularity, and suddenly and to the astonishment of his friends withdrew his namo, asserting positively that he would not be a eandidete for the office, thereby deceiving his friends and causing them to bring forward good men to be throttled and butchered in tho Conven tion by tricksters prompted to action by the supe rior intellect and better disciplined treachery of A. C. Jones. On the announcement of'Mr. Jones' withdrawal from the field he was called upon by different in dividuals to ascertain why he withdrew, and I am credibly informed that he inado this reply : " There will be a good many candidates in the field, and some of tbcm will be hard to beat. I might get the nomination and I might not, but my religion would be urged against me, and some would object to me on account of that oc currence at Lebanon." Now, as to whether Mr. Jones could have got tho nomination on a fair and honorable race or not I am unable to say, but this I will say, that tho way in which he did cut his nomination was too disgraccfel, and too undemocratic, for him to secure his election next June unless ho can spring a trick in the llepubli can ranks bv which he can get a liberal support from them. I was informed by a prominent Dem ocrat, when last in Albany, that Mr. Jones was sprung at the eleventh hour in a Democratic Con- vention held in that place last winter, for the nomination of city officers, and secured the nomi nation of himself for City Kecordcr (if I am not mistaken in tho ofiiee over a Democrat who had the man te let the people know before hand that he desired the nomination ; and after the nomina tion had been made he (Jones) with all possible candor and solemnity pretended creat astonish ment at the result said he bad not been, a candi date and ba 1 not expected the nomination. Now, it may be true that be was not a candidate, but since his villainy at the County Convention we are not inclined to take bis word for anvthin After he received the nomination for Clerk he tried to rdav the same old Mother Goose. He was astonished'at the nomination had not cx pected such a thing was not a candidate did not want tho office.' etc. Well, if he docs not want the office I think he will not bo fjreed to take it. I am told that Hill, one of tbo candidates for Clerk, wont to Jones soma weeks before the Con vention and said to him, "Mr. Jones, I want to know potititely whether you are off the track"? If you are I think of coming out, but if you ara going to run I will not, for it would only cause confusion for so many cqfididatcs to present them selves," whereupon Jones toll him poailirefy, as a friend, that he would not run ; and this was tho inducement that led Hill to come out. Hill put the question to Jone again the day before the Convention, and Jones told him that he need not have any fears, he would not have the office. For the truth of this statement I cannot vouch, for I have not spoken to Hill since the Convention, but the following leads me to believe there is some thing in it : On the day of the Convention Jones was making liiinsclt very busy among tue ueic-gutc-s, and suspicions were aroused that he would play a t'iek.and was asked what he was doing? Did he intend.to come before tne Convention ; He said emphatically that he would not be before tho Convention, he was talking to the delegates on other business. Some of -the delegates were then called npon to know what Jor.a was up to, and tbey said he was feeling for the Clerkship and they thought he would be sprung in the Con tion. lie was sprung. He did evervthiug that -; was dishonorable, and nothing but what two t thirds of the Democracy are ashamed of. i Another thing I wish to call attention-to is this : j It is customary to nominate the Legislative ticket, ! then the Clerk or Sheriff, and so on, taking offices of most importance first. But how was it this i year? The Cicrk was the last man on the ticket ! nominated. The programme of business showed j fraud, treachery, perfidy, and everything but Dc ; mocracy on its fate. Is it to be supposed that honest men Democrats in principle as well as name will submit to sach things ? Ko! they well not!! I favored the nomination of Mr. Lake, but could freely support ny honest man that would honestly get a nomination. I do not op pose Mr. Jones on account of his religiott, for his Mormonism is his own, and not mine, but I vote against his dishonesty in Conventions. A Demo crat that would lie to bis Democratic friends on political matters will lie to them on business mat ters, and as we consider Jones one of that stripe we will scratch him with a far more liberal hand than he has anticipated. " The question then is, who will we support ? I will answer that question . thus : I have heard a great many say that unless there is another Convention called through which the Democracy as a people can be represented, they will support the Republican candidate, and others will not agree to support the Republican until they know who he will be. Wo ask you - to bring out a good man and he will be rospected at tue polls, for Jones is not the people's choice, and if he is elected neither party will be represented for he is not the regular JUcmocratic nominee. Jones denies hav ing been cognizant of the scheme but his word is no better than his' name over hero. His bosom friends told of this thing before hand, and the more indiscreet ones talked it publicly on tho streets as soon as the Convention adjourned, and said it did not make any difference if a few did get sore, a nomination was an election in this county. Under these circumstances I should consider the election of Mr. Jones . a withering shame to the Democracy of old Lion; and if such things are tolerated much longer Democrats will not scratch by hundreds but by whole rcgimints. Wo do not feel like throwing money into a man's bands who would use it as a power to strangle and disorganize his own party. -Nor will we do it. Hoxestt. NEW TO-DAY. NEW; TO-DAY. NEW TO-DAY. A.
