Brownsville, March 22d, 1870.
The Republican Primary Convention met on
Saturday last. Mr. C. A. Williams was called to
the Chair, and Mr. Gus. Wheeler chosen Secre
tary. The following named gentlemen were
chosen delegates to the County Convention :
Wm. L. Smith, A. Wheeler, A. C. Hausman,
Albert Henderson and Thomas Kirk. Fewer
voters were present and less interest taken in the
meeting than has been in any meeting of like
character for some time past.
Rev. W. R. Bishop closed the school in North
Brownsville on Friday last, until after the elec
tion of Directors. Ho has left his application,
and will probably commence again soon after that
time. As a " teachist" he has proved himself
quite a "successist."
Mr. Mackall, who is teaching the Brush Creek
school, was in town last Saturday. From a con
versation with him wo learn that the school in
that interesting neighborhood is in a flourishing
condition. The pupils have become so numerous
that ho has. found it necessary to employ an as
sistant. His wife will act in that capacity for the
present. They have but lately come from Cali
fornia, but are fully alive to the educational in
terests of the juveniles of our Slate.

Convention.

The following proceedings were had at the
Union Precinct Convention, fur Sautiam precinct,
on the lUth inst :
The meeting organized by electing John Pow
ell, Chairman, and S. T. Miller Secretary. The
Chair appoiutcd a committee on resolutions,
which, after a short absence, submitted the fol
lowing report, which was adopted:
Whkreas. We recognize it to be the dutv of

,' position upon every question ot difference ; and,
j Whereas, There is radical difference of opin
I ion with regard to the reconstruction and Fiuan
j cial policy ot the present Federal Administration;

Although it is not known for a certainty that

our friend Wheeler, who has established such an

able rates as heretofore.

the agent last week, and pet to work. In our
opinion it is the best knitter yet offered for sale.

is really a neat piece of machinery, and is only
to be seen by ths farmer's wife to be appre
ciated. Just think of it a complete pair of
socks in one hour. Then tho price $25 for
such a labor-saver, is a mere bagatelle whan you
take into account the labor performed by it.

Branching Oct. The great real estafe brokers

DIED.
On the 21st inst, in the city of Ilarrisbnrg, at
the residence of Lrwin Macy, James Wilson, in
the 72nd vear of his age.
The Home Book op Wonders. This book is
a complete Museum, Descriptive and Pictorial, of
the World's Wonderful Phenomenon. It is
something wonderful in printed facts, and is a
worK containing nearly everything that every
body should read, study and know, and as a book
of reference it has no equal. The work is now in
press, and will be sold only to subscribers. Mr.
G. B. Blood is the gentlemanly agent for the
State, and is at present canvassing Linn county
for subscribers. It is really tho most valuable
work that has been issued from the press for years,
possessing all the interest of the best romance,
and, at the same time, the ripe instruction of the
book of travels, or the work of science and des
criptive art, and no man that can read should be
without it.
A Kr.Y West Affair. At a late
ball in Key West, Fla., on the night of
the 19 lit, an attempt was made to assas
sinate the brothers of the supposed mur
derer of Castanon. The wounds in
flicted were severe, but not mortal.
Reduction. The Ways and Means
Committee and the President are in favor
of a great reduction in taxation, and are
earnestly at work in making such'
changes in the existing laws as will more
equally distribute the burdens of taxa
tion. It is announced that most of the
special and license taxes will be re
moved. The How of It. The two Conven
tions this week have so taken up our
time that we are a little behind with our
news, locals and general, this week.

performance was adjourned. Theatricals are
nowhere in comparison with a Democratic Con

, holders, a Tery cheap and convenient article re
cently patented, for which they have the right for
several counties. They .possess many desirable
