Democratic Cocjctt Cowvkstioji. The dele
gates to the Democratic County Convention met
at the Court House in this city, on Wednesday .and
organised by the election of Enoch Holt, Chair
man, and N. Payne and A. W. Stanard, Secre-
. : Tr i, - .. .
following are tne delegates .elected to
attend the State Convention, which meets in this
city on Wednesday next : A. C. Jones, A. W. j
Stanard, Dr. Dodd, J. Ostrauner, Miles Carey, J.
T. Brooks, Jason Wheeler, Wm. Cyrus, N.
Payne, Joe. Hamilton, E. Holt, Dr. Crawford,
H. L. Brown, S. M. Pennington, A. P. Nye, J.
A. Porter, and Bart. Curl. It was resolved that
M. V. Brown was the choice of the Convention
for the office of State Printer. This last resolve
didn't set well on the stomachs of the bed-rockers,
as they don't like men who are even tainted with
the suspicion of having at any time served as one
of " Lincoln's hirelings." The way some of the
old stand-bys men who have stood right np to
the Democratic rack, through thick and thin,
fodder or no fodder were snubbed and utterly
ignored by the Convention, must be consoling, to
the .recipients. But they insist that they are not
killed off yet, and they intend to make it warm
for these latter-day converts before the game is
over. The strife grows warm and interesting.
Black Walsut Fcbxitcrb. The very neatest
thing in the way of furniture is now on exhibi
tion at the furniture warerooms of Mr. Charles
Mealey, corner of Broadalbin and First streets.
It is a cottage chamber set, .made of black wal
nut, the washatand, bureau, etc, marble topped.
It is as pretty and well designed furniture as we
have seen for a long time. Mr. Mealey has or
dered some new style cottage sets, which will
soon be received. His present stock of Oregon
and Eastern made furniture is larger than ever
before, and purchasers are offered a choice in
styles, both as regards finish and price, so that
they can hardly fail of being pleased in what
they want in the furniture line. Call and take a
nanitch.
Bbov58Tille. We have been fortunate in so
gcuring a correspondent at Brownsville, who has
promised us to write up whatever may occur of
interest in and around that enterprising village.
The first paper will be found in the usual place
to-day, and will prove interesting to all. We are
desirous of securing correspondents in all the vil
lages of the county, who will keep us posted in
matters of local interest in their neighborhoods.
Let us hear from Harrisburg, Scio, Lebanon, and
other places. A good correspondent attracts at
tention to the particular point, and does much
toward building up the town. Start in; you ben
efit yourselves as well as your neighbors.
Railroad Matters. Holladay has already
two hundred hands in his employ, at work in the
shops, running construction trains, and putting
up stations preparatory to vigorous prosecution of
the work as soon as the weather will admit.
More iron has been telegraphed fur, as it is the
intention to push the road twenty-five miles be
yond this city before the setting in of Winter.
Look out for the ears when the bell rings."
BROWNSVILLE . ITEMS.
TROlf OtTR REGULAR CORRESPONDENT.
Browxstille, March 15th, 1870.
Although the weather has been unusually in
clement for this season of the year, for the last
few days, things are still moving on.
Mr. Lewis, of the firm of Morgan A Lew is, has
sold out to Messrs. Coshow A Powell ; the firm
will hereafter be known as Morgan, Coshow A
Powell, and will be happy to wait upon their old
customers and as many new ones as will give
them a call at the Factory store-house in North
Brownsville. Mr. Lewis is making arrange
ments to go to Walla Walla, where he will en
gage in the business of stock raising.
The members of the M. E. Cbnrch are takirg
active steps preparatory to the erection of a house
of worship a building much needed by that denomination.
The Rev. Mr. Kobe, of the Presbyterian
church, held service at the church on Sabbath at
11 A. M., after which ten persons were received
into full membership, all of whom had professed
religion during the late revival.
Rev. John Harris, of the Christian church, held
services at Smith's hall on the same day ; after
which the congregation repaired to the Calapooia,
just below the bridge, and witnessed the receiving
of six persons into that church by the ordinance
of baptism administered by emersion.
Messrs. P. Hume and James Templeton have
in the course of erection quite an addition to the
paint shop of Mr. Hume, in North Brownsville,
where they expect to have a picture gallery in full
operation by the first of April. Jos. Templeton
is a young artist of acknowledged ability, and
feels confident that he wi 1 be able to give satis
faction to all.
Prospects of the Woolen Mills' resuming opera
tions are more flattering than they have been for
some time past. A transcript of the titles, deeds,
etc., have been taken and placed in the hands of
one of the partners, who has gone to the Atlantic
States for the purpose of selling jfut if possible ;
if not, of renting it to some company who wil
run it.
Council Proceedings.
A Bio Crowd. The Democratic State Con
vention, which meets in this city next Wednes
day, will, doubtless attract an immense crowd of
people. The total number of delegates elect is
15S. and if there should be a full attendance,
with the usual number of hangers-on, oar people
will be put to it to find room for them. The
Multnomah county delegation have secured
zooms at the St. Charles.
Cotillon Partt. A cotillon party will be
given at the St. Charles Hotel, in this city, on
Monday night next, to which everybody is invit
ed. . The parties heretofore given by the enter
prising proprietor of the St- Charles, Mr. H.
Brenner, have proved very pleasant and enjoya
able, and those who wish to enjoy themselves
and have a good time, will attend the party on
Monday night. See advertisement.
Tbsj Ladies' Sewimo Societt. The dinner
given by Mrs. Johnson, on the occasion of the
meeting of the Methodist Sewing Society, on
Tuesday last, was a splendid affair, and those
present enjoyed a very pleasant and sociable time.
Those that did not attend missed an excellent
dinner and an enjoyable occasion. The next
meetinz occurs on Tuesday, tho 29th inst., to
which all are invited.
Legal Theodore' Burmester, Esq., havin
takes np his residence in this city, wishes the
feoBe to know it therefore he inserts his card
in the Recisteb. He can be found by clients at
his office in the Parriah brick, at all times, ready
to give adriea, take a " retainer," or. crack
joke.
What op It? Why this, as you'll see by
reading,' Mr. Samuel Denny, who left ns last week
lor the Sound, gives notice that he has duly
authorized Judge O. H. Baber to act as his agent
dar ing his absence, and those interested will do
welt to make a note of it. And that's what's the
matter. - ' ! - v
Sheriffalty. The general impression among
Democrats eeesns to be that the present Sheriff,
Bob. Irvine, will be the suceessful candidate be
fore the Democratic Coanty Convention. He is
undoubtedly the most unobjectionable man to all
'parties the Democracy could fun.
' Storm v.- The weather for the first four days
of the week has been a succession of rain and
anew storms, the latter melting nearly as rapidly
as it fell. Farmers are hoping fur dry weather to
commence farming operations.
PBBcracT Cohvektioh oh Satubdat. The

this ia mind, and come in full force to the meet-

ty Convention is called for next Thursday, the
34th. Tho whole number of delegates from the
different precincts is fifty-two, and it is hoped that
each and every delegate will be in attendance.

Laura, who has been afflicted with inflammatory
rh'SnTnn ti'TTi for a long time, of late has been much
' worse, and it is bow feared that she will lose
her eye sight entirely. .
Religious. Elder T. F. Campbell, President
of the Christian College, will preaefa at the Court
House this evening (Saturday), and at II o'clock
A. M. and 7 o'clock P. M. on Sabbath. ' All are
invited to attend.
Xw Docglas. Mr. Cundiff, formerly one of
our city Dads, is at present in Roaeburg, prepar
ing for work, he having taken the contract for
doing the mason work on the new court house to
be erected for Douglas county.
PaosABLE C AST) ID ate. Mr. Richardson

Mrs. Duniwat has just received a number of
Bartram A Fanton Sewing Machines, direct
from New York. It is claimed for these machines
that they are simple in construction, easily under
stood, make an elastic stifch, fasten their own
ends, adjust their own needles, are easily moved
about on castors, (a convenience no other ma
chine possesses), have extra attachments for all
kinds of fancy work, and are always in running
order. They will seam, hem, fell, quilt, cord.
ruffle, embroider, braid, tuck or gather ; run
without noise, will not soil the operator's clothes,
and are sold at lower prices than any other table
machine in use. Price of machine, with black wal
nut table and drawer, oilod and waxed, fifty
five dollars. I 23-3m
Sewi.io Machines. Messrs. Blain A Young
are averts for the sale of Sewing Machines, and
all the fixtures necessary thereto. This enables
those who wish to purchase any of the first-class
machines to get what they order at the lowest
cash price, and if anything should be lacking, or
should get out of repair, these gentlemen will
take pleasure in furnishing the missing article, or
put the machine in running order, without extra
cost quite an advantage, as those who have pur
chased machines at a distance, have learned by
sad experience. No household is complete with
out one of these labor-savers, and if you want to
be sure of getting what you order, at the lowest
pri :e, and have it delivered to you in complete
running order, call at Blain and Young's and
leave your order. Nuff ced. j
The Home Book op Wonders. This book is
a complete Museum, Descriptive and Pictorial, of
the World's Wonderful Phenomenon. It
something wonderful in printed facts, and is
von containing nearly everything that every
body should read, study and know, and as a book
of reference it has no equal. The work is now in
press, and will be sold only to subscribers. Mr.
6. B. Blood is the gentlemanly agent for the
State, and is at present canvassing Linn county
for subscribers. It is really the most valuable
work that has been issued from the press for years,
possessing all the interest of the best romance,
and, at the same time, the ripe instruction of the
book of travels, or the work of science and des
criptive art, and no man that can read should be
without it.
