Fir-m Ah so a i. Fair. The Linn County Agri
cultural Association will hold its fifth annual fair
on the five days of September next, commencing
on Tuesday, the 20th, and ending with Saturday
the 24th. On the first page of to-day's Register
will be found the list of premiums to be awarded
on that occasion. In looking over this list, it
will be found that it not only embraces a larger
variety of articles than hitherto enumerated, but
the premiums in many cases have been greatly
enlarged. The officers of the Society show a lib
erality in the offer of premiums that will doubt
less add greatly to the prosperity, success and
usefulness of its future meetings. All articles
not enumerated in the printed list, that arc deem
ed worthy, will be awarded diplomas, no matter
whether of home or foreign manufacture. It has
been the aim of the officers of the Association
to do justice to all in the award of premiums, and
with this end in view the list was thoroughly re
vised, and the result is a full and complete li.-t of
all articles that are likely to be on exhibition on
the occasion, for which the most liberal premiums
are provided. They have succeeded admirably
in their undertaking, and it now only remains fur
oar citizens to take the necessary interest to make
the fifth as much better than the fourth, as the
fovrth was in advance of the first annual fair. As
the ladies are first and frcmost in every good
work, the principal additions have been made to
their department, and of course they will appre
ciate this mark of attention by exerting their
usual happy influence on the next fair. Success
to them, and lo the next Linn County Fair.

Exkrgt An Viv. To make any business en
terprise successful the management must possess
the "get up and git" qualities CDergy and
rim. In this era of railroads and telcrrapbs.mcn
who expect to thrive and keep even with the pro
gress of the age, must constantly keep an eye to
windward, and thus be ready to take advantage
of every fresh breeso. Among the business men
is Linn county, there are few who possess the
necessary qualifications to a successful career in a
larger degree than our irieoi Mr. Al. Wheeler, of
Brownsville. lis is never idle, and being an
agreeable,, accommodating gentleman, and keep
ing an assortment of tho very best go'.'ds, which
he sells at the lowsct possible rates, is fust build
ing up a business which is both profitable to him
eelf and creditable to the town. Such men dif
fuse a portion of their energy into the communi
ty in 'which they reside, and do morn toward
building up and advancing its interests and estab
lishing its character abroad, than a dozen drones.
Live men is what Oregon needs, and when they
are found, the community should stick to them.
Oo to Whe--ler"s.
Xtw Firm Hardware, etc. Messrs. W. II.
Kuha A Co., on First street, in the brick adjoin
ing Messrs. Elain & oung, have opened a large
stock of hardware, iron, steel, wagon timber,
farmer's and mechanic's tools, wood and willow
ware, etc., to which they call the attention of the
public. As these gentlemen are thoroughly con
versant with tho business and make it a specialty
of course they will offer superior inducements in
the way of first-class goods at' low rates. Read
their advertisement and drop in and look at the
assortmeut they oiler for sjle.
New Sidewalk. A new sidewalk has been
constructed on the west side of Ellsworth street,
between First and second. Several new cross
walks have also been constructed, much to the
convenience and comfort of pedestrians.
Sew Blacksmith Shop. We are informed
that Mr. Ed. Merrill intends erecting a two-story
building, to be used as a blacksmith shop, on the
corner of Washington and Second street, on the
site formerly occupied by tho Pacific Hotel.
Result. The protracted meeting at Browns
ville, which came to a close on Wednesday,
March 2d, resulted in tho conversion of sixty per
sons, all of whom, we believe, united with the
different denominations represented in the meet
ings. Serenaders. We are indebted to the party of
serenaders, Messrs. Brenner, Price, Thurman and
others, for executing several exquisite pieces at
our residence on Monday night. As they ser
enaded their friends generally in the eastern por
tion of the city, " us'ns " enjoyed a rich and rare
treat. Come again, gentlemen.
Mrs. Duniway has just received a number of
Bartram i, Fanton Sewing Machines, direct
from New York. It is claimed for these machines
that they are simple in construction, easily under
stood, make an elastic stitch, fasten their own
ends, adjust their own needles, are easily moved
about on castors, (a convenience no other ma
chine possesses), have extra attachments for all
kinds of fancy work, and are always in running
order. They will scam, hem, fell, quilt, cord,
ruffle, embroider, braid, tuck or gather ; run
without noise, will not soil the operator's clothes,
and are sold at lower prices than any other table
machine in use. Price of machine, with black wal
nut table and drawer, oiled and waxed, fifty
five dollars. 23-3m
Sewing Maciiises. Messrs. Blain & Young
are averts for the sale of Sewixq Machines, and
all the fixtures necessary thereto. This enables
those who wish to purchase any of the first-class
machines to get what they order at the lowest
cash price, and if anything should be lacking, or
should get out of repair, these gentlemen will
take pleasure in furnishing the missing artiele, or
put the machine ia running order, without extra
cost quite an advantage, as those who have pur
chased machines at a distance, have learned by
sad experience. No household is complete with
out one of these labor-savers, and if you want to
be sure of getting what you order, at the lowest
pri :e, and have it delivered to you m complete
runulig order, call at Blain and Young's and
leave your order. Nuff ced.
The Home Book op Wonders. This book is
a complete Museum, Descriptive and Pictorial, of
the World's Wonderful Phenomenon. It is
something wonderful in printed facts, and is a
work containing nearly everything that every
body should read, study and know, and as a book
of reference it has no equal. . The work is now in
press, and will be sold only to subscribers. Mr.
G. B. Blood is the gentlemanly agent for the
State, and is at present canvassing Linn county
for subscribers. It is really the most valuable
work that has been issued from the press for years,
possessing all the interest of the best romance,
and, at the same time, the ripe instruction of the
book of travels, or the work of science and des
criptive art, and no man that can read should be
without it.
Personal. Mr. Sam'l Young, of Blain &
Young, and Mr. Jas. Cowan, of Cowan A Co.,
next Tuesday start for San Francisco to lay in
their spring and summer stocks. Bon voyage.

new supply of goods.
Frok Scio. Dr. King informs us that a
young man, named James Richardson, of Scio,
a few days since, accidentally shot himself. The
charge from one barrel of a double-barreled shot
gun entered the calf of his leg, lascerating it terri
bly. No particulars.

Portland Market remains dull ; no change in
the price of grain. A good Spring business is
predicted, for which large invoices are constantly
arriving, and the market already assumes ac as

Eastern advices by letter inform the Oregonian
that the New York market is so glutted with
choice flour that the trade can supply themselves
far below the prices at which fancy brands are
held, therefore will buy but in limited quantities.
At present no Oregon brand of flour, but the Im
