Harper A Co., expects to -start for San Francisco soon, to lay in a large stock of Spring and Summer goods. In the mean time they are closing out their present stock at very low rates. UwforT iat. A former resident of thii Mon ty, Mrs Lish, arrived in this city on Monday's boat from Lower California, whose lot, since she left here a few short months since, has been pe culiarly unfortunate and melancholy. 'With her husband and two interesting children she started from Linn county for the Goose Lake country ; from thence making their way gradually down into Southern California, eventually taking up their residence in Los Angeles. There, since last Christmas, in a land of strangers, she lost all that was near and dear to her, children and husband being taken from her with that loathsome disease, small-pox. Alter burying these, all her clothing, bedding, etc., was burned, to keep the dread dis ease from spreading, leaving her far from friends and acquaintances with but fifty dollars in the world with which to commence anew the struggle of life. With this small amount of money, she made her way to San Francisco, where she arrived entirely destitute. San Francisco has one landlord at least who feels for suffering hu manity. This noble man secured for the unfor tunate lady a free pass to Portland on the ocean steamer. From thence, through the liberality of the P. T. Company, she reached here, as above stated, free of charge. She stopped at Dr. Al exander's in this city until Wednesday, when she was forwarded to her friends. Truly ber experi ence has been a hard one. Littlk-Sov lkd. The mean and cowardly fling ia the last week's Democrat at the Rev. Mr. (eary, is condemed by every respectable man in this oommunity, and its author written down a consummate ass. Fbvrr. The friends of Mrs. Delazon Smith will be sorry to learn that she is suffering from a severe attack of fever at present. Her physician. Dr. Alexander, speaks hopefully of her ultimata recovery. Sax Frahcisco. See new card of John U. Hodge A Co., dealers in school and blank books' wrapping paper, pocket cutlery, razors, scissors, etc., San Francisco, California. Orders sent to this horns wilt be promptly filled at lowest rates. Snow. Two or three inches of snow fell on Monday eight ; but the rain and sun of Tuesday dissolved it before the boys had got fairly to snowballing. Observes. The 1-Uh was observed in the usual manner in this city, and many hearts were made happy by the reception of such " sweet valentines." Success Ahead. On Tuesday nigh the Sueceit and fanny Patttm tried their speed between Inde pendence and this city. The former got away first and reached this city first passengers say it was " nip and tuck " Sew Mill at Isdbpendescb. Messrs. Van dyne A Sommerville will commence the erection of a large steam flouring mill at Independence the coming Spring, we are informed. It is an improvement much needed there. Stormv. The heavy storms of the first part of the week sent all the creeks and brooks of this vicinage up " bilin'." Several bridges on Oak creek were damaged, and people were unable to cross for several days. We Rkgrx-i it. We are about to We our spicy end interesting correspondent from Brownsville. Our readers, we know, will regret it as greatly as we do. Our best thanks are due him for tbe good already done, and, if 'tis possible, we hope be will still favor us with a line wherever he may go. Citt Council. This body met on the 10th Among other proceedings had, the city printing for the ensuing year was given to the Democrat at $75, there being no other bid. A day or two prior to the meeting of the Council, we called on one of the members of the Committee on Printing, Rev. Dr. Hill, and asked him if the Committee intended to give the Register office a. show to do the printing for the city. He replied : " Certain ly ; The Committee will call upon you before the next meeting of the Council." With this assur ance we rested. The Committee, nor any mem ber of it, never came near our ofhee, and as the matter had escaped our mind entirely, resting on the promise we had received, of course we put in no bid. If we had not been victim of mis placed confidence, we should at least have had the satisfaction of showing tax payers that they could get the work done as well, at a saving of just $50. Vesison. Hank Mendenhall and two others returned from a trip into the mountains in quest of game, on Tuesday Hank brought in the car casses of three fine deer. A ham from one of them (which he presented us, and for which we here present ourrhanks), had the real venison taste rich and juicy. He got a shot at a tre mendous Oregon lion, the largest he ever saw, but the distance was too great, and the lion es caped. It rained every day during their absence but one, when, for a change, they experienced a small snow storm. Hunting isn't as pleasant at this time of the year as it might be. NEW TO-DAY. A. W. Lebo, of Independence,- some twenty miles below this city, U at work upon a machine, on an entire new princi. ciple, for producing a perpetual motion. All who have seen the model, which ia now in course of completion, speak of it in the most favorable manner, ' and some assert their belief that Mr. Lebo has at last found the principle of perpetual motion. The model is said to be of the greatest simplicity. We bavst much confidence in the success of the "new power," but we wish Mr. L. the largest success in his undertaking, v , No Jobs At All. A minister of the gospel of this city was called on recently to perform the marriage ceremony. It was a regular Web-foot day, the rain descending calmly and steadily, smd the mud deep and soft. The distance was quite considerable and a team had to be procured. The cost ot team, ferriage, etc, amounted to $3 60. and the minister was made happy, doubt- lees, alter the ceremony, by the presentation of S3 SO just tl less than it cost him to bo on hand to attend to the business. Now, where does the Joke come in t " r &CLiatoos. Rev. W. D. Nichols, of Lebanon, will preach at the M. E. Church, in this city, on the fourth Sunday in this month (Feb. 27), at li o'clock A. M. . .. ; j . The evening meetings at the Court House.under tbe Charge of the Revs. John M. Harris and Powell, of the Christian denomination, inaatm rated last Saturday, are well attended, and are exciting considerable interest. xne protracted meeting to be eeadneted bv Ear. Mr. Vanslyck, ot the Southern "Methodists. in- the Baptist Ohurch of this city, was brought to a close on Sunday night, owing to tbe sickness of Mr. V.', and the non appearance of the other ministers who were expected to attend and lend their efforts in expo an ding the word of God. Judge Russell has been absent from this city in Porttaad duriag the week.- " "s adjoining room and found the bed on fire. Time ly efforts soon subdued the fire. W. R. Bishop had his hands considerably burned in his efforts to quell the flames. A number of our citizens went np to Craw fordsvills, eight miles east from here, to witness the installation of the officers of a Good Templars lodge. - An abundance of vocal and instrumental music was had, plenty of refreshments, and a fine time Eenerally. Thi3 section is an extension of the valley back east into the mountains. It is a fine agricultural and grazing country. It is well watered and timbered, and, what is best, the peo ple are wide awake and enterprising. Within a radius of a few miles they have one blacksmith shop, one sash and door factory, one tan-yard, one carding machine, one planing machine, one store and one school house, a Good Templars ball, built and owned by the society, a steam circular saw mill, five water saw mills, one grist mill, and now want a post-office, which we think they richly deserve. , On last Thursday the body of Charles Bury was denosited in the Brownsville cemetery. He was a saloon keeper, ana leii a legitimate victim of his own business. In bis last hours he was raving mad, and had to be tied to keep him from hurting himself or attendants. How many young men will date the commencement of their ruin from his traffic here.tiine and the developments of eternity only will set forth. Others seem anxious to step into his place, and carry forward the de vastating work. Two men appeared and obtain ed licenses to sell whisky in North Brownsville. One deliberately took his own life with a shot gun ; the other died with the delirium tremens. Several copies of the Scio None are taken here. It is a sprightly little sheet ; but the agent here says it is hardly large enough for necessary purposes. An interesting protracted meeting has been going on for two weeks past, by the Methodists, assisted by other denominations. Mrs. Dohiwat has just received a number of Bertram t Fanton Sewing Machines, direct from New York; : It is claimed for these machines that they are simple in construction, easily under stood, make an elastic stitch, fasten their own ends, adjust their own needles, are easily moved about on castors, (a convenience no other ma chine possesses), have extra attachments for all kinds' of fancy work, iand are always in running order.
